The first Emperor of Destruction of the evil race of robots known as Decepticons. He hates Autobots and their leader Optimus Prime.
Following the Cybertronians driving the Quintessons from the planet Cybertron there was a short period of peace between Autobot and Decepticon, but a new more aggressive Decepticon leader emerged, his name was Megatron, the self proclaimed Emperor of Destruction who truly loathed all Autobots. Megatron resumed the Great War between Autobot and Decepticon, ending the goldern era of peace, and struck a devastating blow to the heroic Autobots by killing their leader Sentinel Prime.
Megatron's victory was not total though, Alpha Trion was given the Matrix of Leadership by Sentinel Prime, and in time a new Prime emerged, Optimus Prime, who quickly became the arch-enemy of Megatron.
In time the Decepticon leader sought to build a substantial advantage over his Autobot foes by accumulating power from alien worlds. Leaving Shockwave in command of the Cybertronian Decepticons, Megatron along with some of his most skilled soldiers, which included Starscream and Soundwave, boarded the Nemesis and flew to Earth, Optimus and the crew of The Ark pursued them to the primitive world.

Megatron has appeared in a various Transformers series each of which give a unique history of the character, some tie into one another while others have a completely parallel version of the character though all are representing a different take on the same character with the exception of the Predacon Megatron 2, who took the name Megatron as a tribute to the legendary Decepticon leader.
(main article Galvatron)
At first Galvatron was merely an upgraded version of Megatron, who nearly died from a combination of the injuries he suffered in the battle where he killed Optimus Prime and from being thrown off of Astrotrain and into space by Starscream. Unicron salvaged Megatron rebuilding him into Galvatron to serve as his herald. Later the character became less and less a renamed version of Megatron and more of a separate character completely after he began to lose his sanity.
(main article Megatron 2)
The leader of the Predacons of Beast Wars is not the same Megatron as the Decepticon leader, however, the sparks of both Megatrons merged to form a more powerful entity at one point.
Megatron has notably appeared in these series, each containing numerous story arcs featuring the character.
(G1 is a term that covers the events of Transformers G1, The Headmasters, Masterforce, Victory, Zone, and Beast Wars)
After many of the Autobots and Decepticons who died during the events of The Transformers The Movie were resurrected by a cosmic being who wanted to see the war between Autobot and Decepticon play out first hand, Megatron and Optimus Prime were among the revived, but refused to be pawns in the entities game. Thus the Autobots and Decepticons disbanded as separate factions for a time and became the Cybertronian Alliance (Autocons). But the alliance was short lived after the death of an innocent Decepticon who was murdered by humans. Megatron swore revenge on all humans and thus the Autobots and Decepticons were once again at odds, this time around the Autobots served as defenders of the human race, while the Decepticons sought to exterminate all of mankind for the transgressions of a few.

Prior to the start of the series, the Autobots defeated the Decepticons and cast them off of Cybertron. Megatron
would wander the universe in the Nemesis - the Decepticon flagship - with a small band of Decepticons including Starscream, Lugnut, Blitzwing, and Blackarachnia searching for the allspark. He believed that with the allspark, the Decepticons would have the power to go back to Cybertron and take it from the Autobots. Eventually, they would find the Ark, an Autobot vessel, and attacked it thinking the Allspark might be onboard. Megatron decided to invade the ship personally but before taking off Starscream secretly planted a bomb on his back. As Megatron was attacking the ship, the bomb exploded, taking out most of his right arm and causing mass damage to the Autobot ship. Despite this, Megatron continued his assault on the Autobot ship. After a hard struggle, the Autobot ship would end up in Earth's orbit and the Autobots would manage to kick Megatron out of the ship. Megatron crashed on the ground near Detroit, badly damaged and his head was found by the young Isaac Sumdac. Over the next 50 years, Sumdac would then reverse engineer the technology from Megatron's head and
would greatly advance the technology in Detroit, making it the leading city in robotics. Megatron is eventually accidentally awakened from his dormancy by Sumdac's daughter Sari and her special key which was given power by the allspark. Megatron was at first angered by his position but soon learned he could control much of the technology in the city from his position and attempted to destroy the Autobots secretly. After some failures, he would reveal himself to Sumdac as an Autobot ally and got him to aid him in his plans to destroy the Autobots without Sumdac realizing his intentions. Eventually, Sumdac would discover Megatron's body and repaired it, but at the same time the other Decepticons would find Megatron and used the stolen key to merge Megatron's head back with his body and giving
him a new form in the process. He revealed himself to Sumdac as the leader of the Decepticons and then proceeded to take down the Autobots on his own with littler trouble. Afterwards, he used Sari's key to kill Starscream for his attempt to kill him many years ago and then uses it to seek out the allspark. The Autobots would attempt to keep the Allspark by piloting their ship elsewhere, but Megatron would invade it and take the allspark and placed it into his chest. Sumdac, having been the one who repaired Megatron tried to use a weapon to take him down but it proved mostly ineffective. However, during this time he dropped Sari's key and Optimus would connect the key into the allspark which was in his chest, causing it to go crazy and exploded. Despite this, Megatron survived and in the process kidnapped Sumdac.
Long ago, he was a gladiator who named himself after one of the original Primes - Megatronus. He vowed to challenge Cybertron's leadership and demand all Cybertronians to be treated as equals and he rapidly gained many followers including Soundwave. One day, Orion Pax would begin corresponding with him and Megatronus became a mentor to him. Soon, Megatronus would leave the arena and join Cybertron's politics and as he did he shortened his name to Megatron, naming himself after the herald of Unicron spoke of in the Covenant of Primus. As he appeared before the high council, he revealed that he wanted to overthrow the old guard by force and demanded to become the next Prime. However, his plan would fail and so he would cut all ties with Orion and the council and with his growing army of followers - named Decepticons - he would wage war against all who opposed him and vowed to obtain the Matrix of Leadership.
