Medusa is one of the main villains in Soul Eater. She is a witch who seeks the revival of the Kishin.
Medusa is a witch in the series Soul Eater, and one of the first main antagonists and the most active of the series. She is a snake witch as she has thousands of snakes that reside in her body that can attack with what she refers to as Vector Arrows. It is speculated that Medusa may be 800 years old, maybe even older, through fusing her soul into a new body when the old one comes to its end. She can also place snakes in other people that act as spies for her as well as can control other people. She claims herself to be a scientist and goes to great lengths to study the Kishin, spending most of the first half of the series attempting to revive it with the Black Blood. Medusa also has an intense interest in Stein, who she can tell feels the same way about science and tries to manipulate and corrupt him. She is also the mother of Crona who she has experimented with using Black Blood and melted down the weapon Ragnarok and mixed it in to fuse into Crona. Medusa is also the sister of the creator of demon weapons, Arachne and sister of Shaula Gorgon the youngest Gorgon sister in Soul Eater NOT!.
Medusa, by in large, is a sadistic and unforgiving woman. She uses her powers to punish and crush anyone who gets in her way and goes so far as to manipulate people through lies in order to do work for her.
The character of Medusa Gorgon is a major antagonist of the Soul Eater series created by Atsushi Ohkubo. The first chapter was published in Square Enix's Gangan Powered on June 24, 2003, and began regular monthly serialization in Square Enix's Monthly Shōnen Gangan manga magazine on May 12, 2004.
Her first appearance was in Soul Eater Volume 2 CH. 1 "Demon Sword (Part 1)", and her first anime appearance was in Soul Eater - Episode 7 "Black-blooded Terror -- There's a Weapon Inside Crona?". Her character in the Japanese series is voiced by Houko Kuwashima, and the U.S. dub produced by FUNimation is done by Luci Christian.
Medusa starts out in the series as one of the primary antagonists who leads several world altering events such as the resurrection of Asura, the revival of Arachne, the destruction of Arachnophobia, and several crises in Eastern Europe with Crona. At first, she appears to be a blonde woman of medium build who goes around wearing baggy black clothing. After her death at the hands of Stein, she possesses the body of a small child and takes on a similar appearance, just in a smaller vessel. Her latest form is a mixture of some of the features of Arachne's body and her own as she now has black hair as opposed to blonde. Even though she has switched bodies on three separate occasions, her personality has never changed as she has always been a cold and cunning witch.
When we are first introduced to Medusa, she is above the city of Venice observing and controlling Crona as he collects human souls to transform into a Kishin. After the encounter Maka and Soul have with Crona, Medusa bates Crona to kill the two, only for Stein and Death Scythe to come to their aid. Once it is evident Stein will kill Crona, Medusa released her Soul Protect to attack Stein. The two quarrel for a while before Medusa retreats with Crona in tow. However, it is revealed that Medusa is actually a spy at Shibusen who is under the guise of the school nurse. She claims that the black blood from Ragnarok has melded with Soul Eater and will make for a good experiment.
During a meeting of the Witch Sisterhood, Crona is approached by Eruka Frog and Mizune, who both know her actions would endanger the rest of the sisterhood and that she should stop her actions. Medusa attempts to kill the two there, but retreats soon after, not wanting a fight. Back at Shibusen, Medusa released Soul from the medical wing as she makes her observations on how the black blood is affecting him, bating Maka by informing her that Soul is not being honest with her. While traveling through the streets of Death City, she encounters Eruka and Mizune again,
the two claiming they will kill her and if they can't, she would have to release her Soul Protect to defend herself and alert those at Shibusen that she is a witch. However, Medusa points out that her earlier attack planted snakes in the bodies of the two and kills the eldest Mizune sister by causing the snakes to tear her apart. Eruka escapes, but Medusa catches up with her, commanding her be her servant in exchange for her life and free a prisoner whose cell number is 13.
The prisoner in question is the immortal werewolf who was locked away for stealing the Grand Witch Maba's left eye. After being freed by Eruka, he renames himself Free and allies himself with Medusa in exhcange for his freedom. She tells him to attack Soul and Maka as she wants to see the results of the black blood. She fails to get a good reading and withdraws for a while as she is planning something big in the coming months. Stein, in the meanwhile, deduces she is a witch and attempts to confront her about this, to which she rejects. Sid and Nigus attempt to inflitrate her lab but are seemingly killed by an explosion caused by Eruka
At the anniversary of Shibusen, Medusa plans to unleash the sleeping Kishin that is locked away under the Academy. Gathering her forces, she waits in the ceremony hall as Eruka gathers the Mizune sisters (stating Shinigami-san killed their eldest sister and not Medusa), Free, and Crona wait outside for the signal. In the hall, Stein confirms that she is a witch as Medusa tries to get Stein on her side, claiming they are both people who do things for science. As she tries to place snakes in his body, Sid returns, still alive and annoucing to all the Technicians and Weapons that Medusa is a witch. Medusa flees as she signals Free to seal the banquet hall the ceremony is being held in. Sid manages to free Maka, Black Star, and Death the Kid along with their weapons and Stein while the seal is complete, locking the whole Academy in the room for an hour while they go to revive the Kishin.
In the underground below the Academy, the group first encounters Medusa since she needs the others to revive the Kishin, staying behind in order to delay the group. The three young Technicians are able to get around her as she starts her battle with Stein and Death Scythe. Since her ultimate goal is to delay the two, she defends and stays on the short attack, not giving them an opportunity to strike as Medusa further tempts to get Stein on her side. She reveals to the two that Crona is her child and that she tried to make Crona into a Kishin, but failed. Angered by this, Stein and Death Scythe try harder to kill her, but she manages to lock them in a seal which will cause the two to fight until the end. After some time, Stein manages to use Soul Force on Medusa, but in return, her Vector Arrow is placed next to his neck. She discovers that Stein as sealed her body so long as his hand remains in place. Medusa laughs it off as she knows he'll have to let go soon and he'll die.
Meanwhile, Eruka manages to awaken Asura and begin the waves of madness that start to plague the world. Medusa feels this and gloats in her victory as Stein uses this moment to cut her in half, stating that she let her guard down and while he won the battle, he lost the war. Medusa lays dying on the ground as she tries to kill Stein one last time, killing her in the process as her snakes fly off in hundreds of directions. Outside Death City, Eruka laments how she wanted to kill Medusa, but she has nothing to worry about though. Despite that, a snake with Medusa's arrows is seen leaving the sewers of the City and into the human world, suggestiong Medusa is still alive.
After Arachne has been revived thanks to the Kishin's madness, Medusa uses the snake she put her soul into to possess a girl named Rachel. over the course of a day, Medusa seeps more and more into the young child's body until she fully takes over the girl, claiming that Rachel is no more and that she has been reborn. She goes to Arachne to try and see what she is up to, but Arachne wants nothing to do with her sister, claiming that someone had sold her out to Shinigami-san 800 years ago. However, she allows Medusa to leave as it is shown Eruka is Medusa's spy in Arachnophobia.
Medusa also returns to Shibusen to get Crona under her control again, Ragnarok enjoying the fact that she is small like he is now. Medusa is able to manipulate Crona into poisoning Marie, who is Stein's new weapon, which can allow them to spy on the students at Shibusen and further Stein's madness. As events unfold at the school, Medusa convinces Crona to leave with her yet again as the school wonders where he went off to.
As the war between Shibusen and Arachnophobia escalated, Medusa stayed on the side lines gathering information and continuing her experiments on the black blood on Crona. After some time, all groups find out the location of the magical weapon Brew that Eibon created hundreds of years ago. Everyone knows that with Brew, a side can be powerful that the Shinigami himself. Heading for a location near the North Pole, Shibusen and Arachnophobia battle relentlessly only to find the Brew has been stolen already. Turns out that Medusa's team got the information via their spy link to Stein and Shibusen. As a result, Eruka and the Mizune sisters were able to sneak in during the battle and steal it. Since both sides failed, they figured that they would simply bluff to see where it all would go. Through these events though, the school determined that there was a spy at the school.
After an investigation that led to the death of Joe Buttataki and the revelation of Justin Law as a traitor, Medusa revealed herself to Shinigami. She claimed that she held Brew and would give it up as an act of good faith towards their negotiation. Shinigami is not pleased with her actions and is hesitant to discuss things with her until she reveals the location of her sister and the headquarters for Arachnophobia. With this information at hand, the two parties agree to a temporary truce so that the Spatori team from Shibusen and Medusa's own team could infiltrate Arachnophobia and kill Arachne.
With Free, the Mizune sisters, and Eruka in the base already, Medusa lead a team consisting of Maka, Kid, Kilik, and Oxford with their respective weapons to a secret passage to the base in order for a sneak attack. While they make their way through the tunnels, Maka asks Medusa about Crona and her whereabouts. Medusa claims that Arachne has Crona and plans on sacrificing her in order to obtain even more power to spread madness in the world. After a while in the tunnels, the team comes across a few of the Mizune sisters and Eruka who have provided disguises so they can infiltrate the base easier. However, since they look like ever other cloaked member of Arachnophobia, they can not tell who is who. Even though they are split up, their orders are the same: head to the eight ends of the castle and destroy the magical generators so they can get into Arachne's lair.
During this time, Medusa proves to be a reliable and useful ally who saves some of the meisters from harm during fights and even lends her powers to aid the others in their struggles to destroy the generators. Once all eight are destroyed and Black Star is providing a distraction outside to lure out Mifune, Medusa and Maka move in to take down Arachne. They suffer from a illusion spell at first but break through it easily to face Arachne. Medusa allows Maka to do all the work since she claims that her Witch Hunter attack is far more effective than any spell she has. Maka uses her all her energy and her care for Crona, who she believes is still under Arachne's capture. to form Soul into the Demon Hunter and kill Arachne. As they claim her soul, they notice Medusa's soul has left Rachel's body and taken over Arachne's body. She claims that the whole purpose of this was to claim a new and stronger body than her old one and that she lied about Crona ever being there. Maka tries to face Medusa on her own but Tezca Tiploca and Enrique show up to subdue Medusa who eventually escapes with her entourage.
After the battle of Arachnophobia, the efforts of Shibusen were focused on locating Noah and his group since they had kidnapped Kid as well as Justin Law had defected to their group. In the meantime, Medusa took the time to erase Crona's memories of her time at Shibusen and everyone else she met there. Black Star encounters Crona during a mission and tries to convince her to come back to Shibusen, but he realizes that Medusa's hold on her was too much since Ragnarok had evolved into a more deadly weapon.
Medusa comes into contact with Noah's group once as Justin Law attempts to execute her so that she can be out of the way once Noah comes in contact with the Kishin. During the fight though, Tezca and Enrique show up to try and take care of both parties but Medusa is able to escape once again.
After the Spatori team defeats Noah and saves Kid, Medusa has Crona unleash an attack on Russia and Eastern Europe in order to attack one of the Death Scythes, Tsar Pushka and his meister Feodor. Crona is able to use her black blood to create black spheres of madness that lock the two in as she is able to encase part of Ukraine in the same substance. Medusa thanks Crona for her hard work and tells her that she loves her and is sorry for the horrible things she has done in her past. Crona, in a fit of a mental breakdown, kills Medusa as she claims that Medusa is a liar and is probably not her real mother as she obliterates Medusa. Medusa seems to be pleased with her death. It is unknown at this point if she is still alive or not.
