Kitajima Maya is the protagonist of Glass Mask. The franchise follows her often turbulent acting career as she strives to play the lead in "The Crimson Goddess" -- a legendary Japanese play.
Just 13 years old at the beginning of the series, Maya is often regarded as clumsy, talentless and generally below average by both family and peers. She is recognized early on, however, as something akin to an acting savant by former actress Chigusa Tsukikage who one day sees Maya re-enacting a television drama in an attempt to entertain some children. Thoroughly impressed with Maya's natural talent, Tsukikage takes Maya under her wing, hoping to groom her to play the lead role in "The Crimson Goddess," a legendary Japanese play.
While Maya is regarded as having a tremendous amount of natural talent, her career is often quite turbulent and she is often forced to endure significant hardships in order to continue on the path to her dream without much support from friends or family. She is, fortunately, nearly constantly supported by a secret admirer she has dubbed her "purple rose fan," who provides her with both emotional encouragement and, at times, financial support.
Maya's primary rival in the series is Ayumi Himekawa, a famous young actress with celebrity parents who Maya deeply respects.
Maya is involved in many dramatic projects over the course of the franchise, but some of her more significant roles include:
