1942- . Born in Taipei, Taiwan, Hata studied briefly at the Tamamo College of Arts before dropping out to join Tokyo Movie Shinsha. He left for Mushi Production in 1965, where he worked on the Journey to the West TV series and the movie Arabian Nights. He rose from animator to director on Tales of Hans Christian Andersen before leaving Mushi for Madhouse. In 1974, he joined the animation wing of the Sanrio toy and accessory company, where he made titles such as Ringing Bell and Journey through Fairyland. He rejoined Tokyo Movie Shinsha in 1985 and directed the anime adaptation of the Famicom (NES) game Super Mario Brothers.
