Maron Kusakabe, protagonist of Kamikaze Kaitou Jeanne, is the reincarnation of Jeanne D'Arc and God's only hope of surviving agaisnt the plots of Satan.
Maron Kusakabe appears to be , at first, a normal teenager living her life at the age of 16 focused on her studies and gymnastics. But, at the start of the series, Kamikaze Kaitou Jeanne, is to go on a mission from God and seal all the demons who steal away the great beauty that lies within the human heart. At first, Maron refuses to believe in this, and is greatly torn apart by all of the happenings, but she comes to her sense as the persistant calls from God come
at her. God sends the Angel, Finn Fish to help her and teach her the ways of the powers she is to be bestowed. Finn is also on a mission, for if she fails to help Maron succeed in sealing away the demons, she will never get the chance to become a archangel in heaven.
Finn gives Maron a hair ribbon, that magically transforms her into her God-given alter ego Kamikaze Kaitou Jeanne. Kamikaze Kaitou Jeanne,"divine wind phantom theif jeanne," is Maron only as the reincarnation of Jeanne D'Arc. The demons she are to capture are usually hidden in expensive pieces of priceless art, in which an innocent human with beauty in their hearts looks at the painting and becomes the host of the demons, as it channels the beauty towards Satan and away from
God. Jeanne finds the piece of artwork and fires a special push-pin at it to capture the demon and free the host human, hear catch phrase is "CHECKMATE" as she aces the job. But, what most don't know is that she is a sad and lonely young teenager. At a young age , her parents left her to go and become more dedicated to their jobs. For years, she recieved no communication at all and awaited everyday for a letter or even a phone call. The first form of communication she receives is a cold call from her mother, informing her that her father and her were going to be receiving a divorce. Maron longs for the intamcy of a family and the feeling of parental love near her everyday.
Instead, all she has is the family of her best friend Miyako, who turns out to be her neighbor. They have watched out for her ever since she was little and started to live by herself. In the series, the somewhat antagonist is Chiaki, who is Kaitou Sinbad and is spectated to work for Satan. He is leery at first and annoys Maron, but he soon starts to care for her and
want to protect her. He ends up breaking Maron's heart at first, for she finds his first motives, which were to make her fall in love with him so he could use her to complete her job. But, over time his motive is ruined as he falls in love with Maron. Near the end of the series, Maron and Chiaki marry and have a daughter named Natsuki, who is the reincarnation of Finn.
