Summary

A bunch of people, in what was thought an unpopulated island watch. The normally calm and composed Robin is so shocked at the sight of this name that she collapses in fear.

Robin explained the names of the three admirals in the Marine fleet. Akainu, Aokiji, and Kizaru.

The crew is getting quite heated, but Aokiji expresses no interest in fighting anyone. He's only out for a walk. He had heard that Robin was with the Straw Hat crew and he had come to investigate that rumor. This is contrary to what he said earlier about just being out for a walk.

Despite his laid back attitude, Luffy seems intent on attacking him.

The people we were hiding earlier come out and request Aokiji's help as a Marine. They were shipwrecked on this island. Chopper tends to their injuries. Their ship was damaged by a giant frog.

This frog is a canon character, Yokozuna, that will play a part in the upcoming Water 7 Arc, but is appearing here out of continuity.

There is an art mistake when Luffy is realizing his mistake, that most poeple see Marines as the good guys and pirates as bad. If you look at Nami's left wrist, her Log Pose is missing.

Aokiji leads the people to the shore and reveals he's a Devil Fruit user. He ate the Hei-Hei Fruit (Ice-Ice Fruit), which is one of the most powerful elemental Devil Fruits, in the league of Enel and Ace.

In the manga version Aokiji did create an ice path in the moving ocean to another island, but it wasn't for stranded civilians. He created it to assist Tonjit on his journey to reunite with his tribe.

Once the people are gone Aokiji comments on Luffy's grandfather. Luffy has a terrifying reaction to hearing about him, but the topic is quickly dropped . Aokiji changes his mind and decides to try and kill the crew. Aokiji's warning about traveling with Robin will play a big role later on in one of his most intense battles to come in episode 309.

Aokiji talks mostly to Robin and seems to be trying to goad her with a conversation only the two of them really understand. Robin gets angry and snaps Aokiji's body completely in halk, but it's of little use against this type of Devil Fruit user.

After he has reformed. Suddenly, Robin is directly in front of him.

Aokiji's swing with an Ice Saber is blocked by Zoro and Sanji leaps into the battle to disarm him. He grabs both Zoro and Sanji just as Luffy punches his midsection. Every part that touches Aokiji's body on the crew starts to be covered in ice.

Robin tries to say that she's changed somehow, but he grabs her and she's completely frozen.

Points of Interest

  • Much of these events have been altered from the manga. In the manga version of this segment of the story, Luffy and the crew ran into Aokiji outside Tonjit's home once the Davy Back Fight had been completed.
