Origin

Makarov and Shitou in their younger days

Makarov is the guild master of Fairy Tail and his team mates are Bob, Goldmine, Porlyusica, Rob, and Shitou. (Not much info is currently reveal about Makarov's history with his team mates). His son is Ivan and his grandson is Laxus.

Makarov's stamp is revealed

Character Creation

Makarov, who is created by Hiro Mashima, has no information on what inspired the author to create him.
Note: Hiro Mashima states that he wanted Makarov's name to be Russian. He makes his debut in chapter 2 in the manga and in episode 2 of the anime. Makarov is voiced by Shinichi Kotani in the Japanese version and R. Bruce Elliot in the English version.

Makarov's Eulogy for Erza Scarlet

"This woman, Erza Scarlet, was loved by the gods, and she loved them. And she loved us, her friends, as well. Her heart was as big and limitless as the sky. Her sword glistened nobly, nad was used only for those she loved. She moved in the way fairies dance, and she was lovelier than the finest scenery nature can produce. It is love that makes one strong! But what makes one weak is love. And I loved her as a true member of my family. I pray for the peaceful repose of her soul."

Appearance

Makarov usually wears a hat that has two horns sticking out at a 90 degree angle. He is a short person, but Makarov has magic that can change his size. Also, Makarov carries a staff. Interestingly, Makarov's staff during Natsu and the Dragon Egg flashback has a smiley face. His hat can vary in color because sometimes it is stripe or a solid color.

Personality

For Makarov's habits, he likes to drink alcohol and relax. Most of times, Natsu, Gray, and sometimes, Erza, makes Makarov have a heart attack due to their rampant destruction. When he is drunk, Makarov becomes a perverted old man. For example during the lullaby arc, he talks about Lucy's nice body.

Relationships

For his relationships with his son, Makarov truly loves his son, but he regrets for Laxus's extreme and erratic behavior due to his prestige status as a powerful mage. Specifically, Makarov regrets that his greatness has made his son live in his shadow, and everyone sees Laxus only as his grandson.

Story Arcs

Makarov is actually a frequent character even though his role varies. He plays the father role to the younger generation of Fairy Tail (ie: Natsu, Erza, and others) and he fights to protect his guild from danger during the Phantom Arc.

Macao Arc

Romeo punches Makarov

Makarov makes first appearance as a giant shadow who barges in the Fairy Tail guild when everyone starts beating each other. After he sees Lucy, Makarov calms down and shrinks to his normal size. He welcomes Lucy with open arms. After silencing his guild, Makarov does a flip jump to the second floor, but he hits his head on the way up. He gives everyone a lecture because he receives complaints from clients. He scolds everyone and tells what they have done wrong. However, Makarov burns the paper when he says the council can eat crap. Everyone at Fairy Tail rejoice at Makarov's words. The next day, when Romeo asks him about Macao's whereabouts, he tells Romeo that his father is a man and a Fairy Tail mage who can take himself. Also, he tells Romeo to be a good boy and drink some milk. When Makarov resumes drinking his beer, Romeo who is crying quickly smacks Makarov in the face.

Lullaby Arc

Makarov attends the guild master meeting before Erza arrives home to forge a team with Natsu, Gray, Lucy, and Happy. When Mirajane reports that Erza comes home, Makarov has a fearful look and collapses from a heart attack. He fears that Erza's new team will wreak more havoc and destruction and Fairy Tail's reputation will go down.

After Erigor is defeated and Kage rushes to the guild master meeting over in Clover with the Lullaby flute, Makarov bumps into Kage. At first, Kage wants to use the flute, but Makarov's words about friends and how people can rely on each other which makes up a guild. Makarov's words touch Kage's heart, and Kage puts down the flute. However, the flute talks and mocks Kage for not being cold-blooded enough to kill the guild masters. The flute transforms into the Lullaby monster. Makarov watches the Erza, Natsu, and Gray destroy the monster, but their attacks have cause collateral damage to the surrounding areas. The guild master building is destroy, and the mages tries to arrest Makarov and his guild members. Makarov and his guild members run for their lives. Later that week, when Makarov spectate Erza and Natsu's battle, Erza gets arrested by the magic council. Makarov tries to stop Natsu from helping Erza, but Makarov takes Natsu's place in the cup due to his shapeshifting abilities.

Galuna Island Arc

Mystogan and Laxus appears in the guild. Makarov tells Mystogan to shut off his sleeping magic, and the only person who does not fall asleep is Laxus. Laxus states that he saw Mystogan's face. Makarov warns Natsu not to take the S missions or face the consequences. However, Happy steals a flyer, and Natsu, Lucy, and Happy heads over to Galuna Island. At first, Makarov sends Gray to retrieve Natsu, and he sends Erza over there. He did not punish Natsu and his team for completing the S mission.

Phantom Arc

Makarov's role in this arc is major like the Fighting Festival arc. His role is a father who protects his guild like a family when Phantom Guild attack Fairy Tail. Makarov leads the invasion on Phantom Guild after team Shadow Gear has been ambushed and crucified by Gajeel. Makarov displays his anger and power as he heads up the tower. However, Jose Porla is not there but his astral projection. Suddenly, Aria ambushes Makarov and drains his magic. He falls through the ceilings and onto the floor. Erza declares a retreat when Makarov has fallen. Makarov tries to recover in Porlyusica's home. After Mystogan gathers up Makarov's scattered magic, Makarov recovers and heads to fight Jose Porla. When Jose Porla has Erza (she is injured prior) in the corner, Makarov intervenes the fight. Makarov unleashes his Fairy Law and wipes all of Jose's shadows and nullifies his darkness magic. When Aria tries to ambush Makarov, Makarov easily knocks Aria out.

Makarov sleeps through the trials and his act has made many of the council members mad except Jellal and Shitou. Shitou talks to Makarov that it was him who bailed him out. Shitou tells Makarov that they are old and should retire, and he says he will not be around to save Makarov from the law. Makarov does not take Shitou's words seriously and talks about food. Makarov tells Shitou that he cannot retire because there is no one suitable to take place yet.

After the destruction of Fairy Tail and the defeat of Jose Porla and his Phantom Guild, Makarov changes size to a giant and places beams where Erza tells him. At night, Makarov contemplates on who should take his place as guild master. He thinks about Laxus, but Laxus is too destructive and will wipe out the weak Fairy Tail members. He thinks about Gildarts, but Gildarts rarely makes an appearance. He thinks about Mystogan, but Mystogan is too shy. He thinks about Erza, but he thinks she is too young.

Fighting Festival Arc

When the Miss Fairy Tail Pageant is ruined by Evergreen petrifying the Fairy Tail women and Laxus using them for his tournament, Makarov is angry at Laxus for his selfish desires and his endangerment of the guild members. At first, Makarov tries to to help his guild, but Freed's runes will not allow eighty year old people (and dragon slayers for some reasons) to participate in the fight. During the battles, Makarov decides to surrender and tells Laxus to stop the tournament, yet Laxus replies to Makarov to give up his title of guildmaster to him. However, Makarov refuses his offer.

Powers and Abilities

Makarov's main attribute is light magic when he unleashes Fairy Law on Jose Porla. It is also reveal that Makarov has some other elemental magic. For example, he burns the papers in episode 2 without a match. Makarov's other abilities is growing up to become a giant. This ability is seen in episode 2 and during the reconstruction after the Phantom Arc.

Fairy Law Magic Circle	Makarov's strongest light technique allows him to destroy all evil. The only weakness is that it cannot hurt the innocent. Side Effects: People feeling warm and fuzzy when Erza and others comment on the Makarov's aura. Example: Laxus failing to use Fairy Law to hurt his guild members.

Other Abilities

Becoming a Giant - Makarov can become big and can elongate his arms. This ability is seen during Macao arc and the reconstruction after Phantom arc. Also, his weight changes so he is heavier as he grows bigger.

Anime and Manga Differences

In the anime, when Makarov contemplates on who should replace him, he talks about Laxus, Mystogan, and Erza. However, in the manga, Makarov talks about Laxu, Mystogan, Gildarts, and Erza. The reasons are unknown at this time.
Unlike the anime, Makarov is a giant when he uses Fairy Law on Jose Porla.
