Maka is Soul Eater Evans' partner and one of the protagonists of Soul Eater.
Maka Albarn is one of the top students at Shibusen, school for meisters and weapons, having an academic rivalry with supporting character Ox Ford. Her chosen weapon style is that of a scythe, due to her wanting to be like her mother. This results in her becoming scythe weapon Soul Eater Evans' meister.
The character of Maka Albarn is the main protagonist of the Soul Eater series created by Atsushi Ohkubo. The first chapter was published in Square Enix's Gangan Powered on June 24, 2003, and began regular monthly serialization in Square Enix's Monthly Shōnen Gangan manga magazine on May 12, 2004.
Her first appearance was in Soul Eater Volume 1 Prologue 1 "Soul Eater", and her first anime appearance was in Soul Eater - Episode 1 "Resonance of the Soul – Will Soul Eater Become a Death Scythe?". Her character in the Japanese series is voiced by Chiaki Omigawa, and the U.S. dub produced by FUNimation is done by Laura Bailey.
Maka has remained a mostly static character throughout the show, not showing too much change. She begins as a bookworm with great scythe skills, and has yet to change. The anime/ manga has had multiple instances in which her resolve is hardened, or her character fleshed out, but there's not too much growth seen in her.
Maka is a very level-headed person most of the time, but her anger has been known to manifest itself in her vicious "Maka Chop". She also seems to display moments of emotional instability whenever her father, Death Scythe Spirit, is involved. Her parents were divorced when she was still young due to her father's womanizing ways. She holds a grudge against her father for destroying their family, and makes many allusions to her distaste of his lifestyle.
Maka's first appearance in the series is in a prequel chapter to the series where she and Soul have almost gathered up enough Keshin Eggs for Soul to become a Death Scythe. All they need to do now is hunt down and capture one witch's soul, so they eventually stumble upon Blair. Soul is almost helpless during each attempt they make to battle her because every time he sees Blair he gets an uncontrollable nose bleed. However when Soul switches sides and says he is going to join Blair, Maka just says he's like every other man, just someone who isn't loyal and will betray others to pursue loose women. It is then that Soul reveals he was just trying to get close to Blair so that Maka could grab him and slice her apart. When they do they apparently kill Blair and Soul eats her soul, only to reveal that Blair wasn't a witch, just a cat with magical powers. This means that Blair is still alive since cat's have nine lives, and it also means that Soul now has to go back to zero and start collecting Kishin eggs all over again.
When the series first begins Maka teams up with Black Star and his weapon Tsubaki to track down an old teacher, Sid, who has turned into a zombie. They find him in a graveyard where he attacks each of them and they find that he truly is far stronger than they had expected. Maka is forced to bring out her most powerful attack, a technique that her mother had invented and could be achieved by reaching soul resonance with Soul, the Witch Hunter. However Maka isn't strong enough to use the attack just yet and she misfires, almost hitting Black Star. However Black Star is able to trap Sid and they hear from him that he was turned into a zombie by another former teacher at the school, Frank Stein. They hunt down Frank, but he was overpowering and defeated them with ease. When he is about to kill Maka, Soul comes out of his weapon state and shields her, which Frank says was enough to let them past the test. This was all an exam set up by Lord Death, and they passed by working together.
While in Italy to hunt down another Kishin Egg, Maka senses something odd coming from a church, something that is almost like a meister but almost like a keshin as well. When they arrive at the church they find Crona, who has just slayed an entire room full of people. They battle Crona but find that her body is as strong as steel because of the black blood in her system, Maka can't even decapitate her and the best she can do is create a tiny cut on her neck that causes a single drop of blood to come out. Maka is about to be killed by Crona when Soul comes out of his weapon state and takes the attack for her, even though she asked him not too for fear of what would happen to him. The fight is then interrupted as Frank Stein and Maka's father Spirit come to her rescue. After the battle Maka waits outside of the doctor's office at the school to wait for him to recover, and even after he is healed enough to make it she still stands by his side as he sleeps just to make sure he's okay, but she finds it hard now to even look at him because of the scar on his chest which is a reminder to her of how she failed him.
Once Soul is healthy enough they along with Black Star and Tsubaki are called to a bridge in London where they are attacked by Free, who is far stronger than any of them. Once the battle begins Soul tries to transform into his weapon form for the first time since he was attacked, only to find that Maka now cannot lift him because of the black blood in him. She uses Tsubaki against Free but their souls aren't a perfect match so they cannot battle at full potential. Soul eventually decides to give into the effects of the black blood and Maka can lift him again, however she now feels like his soul is overtaking him and trying to eat her. She pushes Free off the bridge and he freezes under the water.
During a party on Christmas Eve, Medusa decided it was time to attack Shibusen in an attempt to free the kishin Asura, who dwelled in a deep slumber underneath the school. She trapped everyone in the school in the ball room, but Sid was able to get Maka and her friends free before the containment spell was complete. It was up to these students to now stop Medusa from freeing this beast. Maka was able to run past Medusa while Frank Stein engaged her in battle, but she was stopped again by the next obstacle, that being Crona. Black Star planned on fighting her, but Maka told him that this was a battle she had to engage in. When they fought this time, Soul drew on the power of the black blood inside of himself again, only this time he linked his soul to Maka's, and both of them were affected by the effects of the Madness. Maka lost total control of herself as she did battle with Crona and continued to battle her until Crona's own body started reacting violently, as if the black blood inside of her was rejecting itself.
Maka regained control of herself and linked her soul to Crona's and plunged herself into her mind. Inside she found a small Crona, drawing circles in the sand in order to separate herself from the rest of the world. Maka knocked down these circles, and let Crona know that she wasn't alone. Once Soul pulled Maka out of Crona's soul, Crona now fought back against Ragnarok, the embodiment of the black blood in her system, telling Maka she would hold it off while she went on ahead. Maka ran ahead, only to arrive in time to see Asura now freed. She leaped to grab onto him, but was so tired that as soon as he carried her out of the bunker she lost her grip and fell to the earth, where Soul grabbed her and both passed out soon after. Maka and her friends had failed.
After the battle with Crona, she is now being held at the school and Maka asks Sid if she can see her. With the help of Marie, Maka is able to convince Crona to come out of her room and they look around the school. They ask Crona if she would like to accompany Maka on a mission down into the Czech Republic. When they arrive they are lead into the woods by a man named Sou, who Soul doesn't quite trust. They are attacked by a golem and Maka and Soul are quickly overpowered. They ask Crona to help and she is still too worried about using her powers. However when the golem lunges in for an attack to finish them off Crona jumps in and blocks the attack with her sword. Sou transforms into a chainsaw, revealing himself to be a Weapon by the name of Giriko, and is used by the golem to fight against them. When they slice open the Golem millions of spiders crawl out and form into the witch Arachne. She says that she has been waiting for hundreds of years for the right time to crawl out, watching the world develop through the eyes of millions of spiders. She heads off leaving Giriko to finish off Maka and her friends, but they are saved by Justin Law showing up.
Maka is very skilled in battle with a scythe, but is mostly skilled with Soul specifically. While in the Book of Eibon, in the chapter of Envy, she attempts to handle a broom the same way that she handles Soul, but can barely twirl it once without dropping it. This is due to the fact that a meister and their weapon share a bond that makes them stronger together.
Soul Perception: Maka possesses a unique ability which allows her to see the souls of others and even sense them from far off.
Anti-Demon Wavelength: Maka has an anti-demon wavelength to her soul, which allows her to overcome the madness that comes from Asura and from Soul's black blood.
Witch Hunter: When Maka performs Soul Resonance with Soul, he can transform into a more powerful form that has the power to purify evil, a form known as Witch Hunter.
Genie Hunter: Also known as Maijin Hunter, the Genie Hunter is a stronger form of the Witch Hunter. It is a form that Maka's mother first created and passed down to her. This form not only purifies evil like the Wtich Hunter, it even eradicates it, going as far to be able to harm and even kill an immortal.
Grigori Soul: Maka possesses a Grigori soul, a soul that has wings, something that only appears in every 50 million people. When Maka combines her soul with Soul, it allows them to fly.
Maka's relationship with Soul is a strange one, as the two of them do not fit together in the way many other teams do. Regardless of the differences in their personality, they generally work well together. No mention of a relationship between the two characters has been made, but they are very protective of one another. In the battle with Frank N. Stein, Soul covers Maka's body with his own to protect her. Likewise, in the battle with Crona (the first meeting), Maka refuses to guard Crona's attack as it would damage Soul.
