Maetel is a character from the Galaxy Express 999 series who lives in the Capital of Rain.
Overview
As one of the poor citizens of the Capital of Rain, Maetel (not to be confused with the Maetel who travels with Tetsuro) lives in a one room bubble house located 600 feet deep inside of a mud pool.
Creation
Maetel was
designed and created by Shingo Araki and Shigeru Kogawa during the late
1970s. She appears in the Galaxy Express 999 series, which was created
by Leiji Matsumoto, creator of the popular Captain Harlock franchise. Her clothing and appearance bears an uncanny resemblance to the character Mimeh from the Captain Harlock franchise.
Major Story Arc
Maetel of the Mud
After finding out that what hotel Tetsuro would be staying at, Maetel calls him and asks him to come to her house for a visit. Tetsuro agrees to visit her but when he searches for her house, all he can find is a pool of mud. Maetel calls out to him and when he gets near the mud pool, she pulls him in. When he awakens, she tells him that she wants for him to stay with her forever since both of them understand poverty and would be a good match for each other. Tetsuro tries to force his way out to escape, but passes out and ends up back in Maetel's bubble house.Maetel's demands change once she hears a radio transmission saying that the Galaxy Railways will offer any reward for the safe return of Tetsuro. Upon hearing this, she calls them and tells her location. A few moments later the mud is removed from her pond and she and Tetsuro are on the surface. Tetsuro's Maetel meets the two of them at the Galaxy Railways office and the other Maetel makes her requests: a boarding pass and Tetsuro. Surprisingly, Tetsuro's Maetel agrees to this and the three board the 999.
Aboard the train, the other Maetel calls out to Tetsuro and Tetsuro's
Maetel tells him to sit with her and be kind. Tetsuro reluctantly
agrees and has a bad attitude while in her company. The other Maetel
gets sicker and sicker while on the train and Tetsuro begins to
genuinely worry about her safety. After a few minutes on board, her
body is unable to handle the new environment and she turns into dirt.
