Madam Sharley is a shortfin mako shark mermaid who grew up Fish-man island, and she's the younger sister to, Arlong. However, she doesn't share his hatred or discrimination of humans. She has even enjoyed the stories told by Hatchan of a human he once saved and is his friend. As a renowned fortune-teller of the Fish-Man Island, she predicted many of the most important events of the world. She predicted the beginning of the Great Age of Pirates, and the Battle of Marineford that led to the death of Whitebeard.
At some point in Madam Sharley's life, she moved to Coral Hill and build the Mermaid Cafe, one of the most popular spots visited by tourists. She hardly ever uses her fortune telling powers.
Madam Sharley is a supporting character from the One Piece series by Eiichiro Oda. The series first began serialization in Shueisha's Weekly Shōnen Jump on August 4, 1997. She first appeared during the Fish-Man island Arc that began in Volume 61.
Her first manga appearance was in One Piece Vol. 62, CH. 610 "Fortune-Teller Madame Sharley", and her first anime appearance was in One Piece - Episode 529 "The Fish-Man Island Will Be Annihilated?! Sharley's Prophecy!". Her character in the Japanese series is voiced by Romi Paku, and the U.S. dub produced by FUNimation has yet to announce any casting information.
Sharley's name was often written originally in the Japanese publication as "Shyarly", as seen on Ch. 610 (Pg. 8 Panel 2). Both FUNimation and VIZ Media romanized her name as Sharley.
There was originally a continuity error in the Weekly Shōnen Jump publication of One Piece Ch. 544. She was illustrated in a flashback as a young woman, but this would have made her older than thirty years of age in the current time line. In series, mermaids can split their legs to walk once they are thirty years old. Oda would later correct this in Volume 65's release by redrawing Sharley as much younger.
Madam Sharley was at her home at the back of the Mermaid Cafe in Coral Hill when Camie came by with some human friends, Monkey D. Luffy, Sanji, Chopper, and Usopp. Sharley offered them her room while they searched for a blood donor for the injured Sanji. Sharley then gave Camie the day off to show her friends around. Soon after they left, Sharley couldn't help feelings something calamitous about Luffy. Looking into her crystal ball, she saw that he would cause the destruction of Fish-Man Island. She went out in a panic and calling for Luffy to be sent away. The princes from Ryugu Palace arrived looking for the Straw Hats on another matter and asked about her vision. Fukaboshi was doubtful, but didn't think they should be running wild either.
After Hody Jones captured King Neptune with his New Fish-Man Pirates and took him to Conchcorde Plaza to be executed. Sharley followed to tell Hody about her vision of the island's destruction, but he became angry when she told him that he was not the one she saw. He fired at her with his Water Shot attack. As her injuries were being tended to by a doctor, some children came up asking when Luffy was suppose to destroy the island. She doesn't know the dates of her visions. Surprisingly, the children wanted him to come, becasue they didn't like the idea of the Fish-Man Island Hody was going to create under his rule.
To everyone's shock, the Straw Hats appeared to fight Hody's men and free the royal family. Sharley watched the fierce battle from the distance, and she told the children to watch this fight and decide for themselves who was the evil ones. The New Fish-Man Pirates who want to force their hatred of humans onto others, or the Straw Hats fighting to save the people of the island they weren't even from. In the end Luffy and his crew saved the island and ther was a huge celebration.
Sharley later sent her mermaid staff off to say goodbye to the Straw Hats, and Camei noticed that Sharley had broken her crystal ball. She felt the future was better left unknown, and apologized to Camie for suspecting her friends.
Mermaids in the world are the fasted living creatures in the water. She also has the ability to communicate with fish. As a shark-mermaid, she has much more ability for strength than other mermaids.
Madam Sharley has the power of precognition through the use of her crystal ball. Her fortune-telling abilities are renowned to all part of Fish-Man Island, and none of her visions have ever not happened. The limit to this ability is that she can not tell the date of these events. They could happen within a day or even years later.
She has predicted the beginning of the Great Age of Pirates, and the Paramount War that would lead to the death of Whitebeard and change the balance of world power. Since all of her visions are of terrible events, Sharley would destroy her crystal ball. She believed that the future would be better left unknown.
The the original manga publication, the image of Luffy in Shalrey's vision was little more than a dark silhouette. This led many readers to suspect that Luffy wasn't actually the person she saw. The One Piece anime depiction of this scene made it clear who Sharley was seeing in her vision.
In the anime edition of One Piece, the sign of Sharly's home that appears in Episode 529, her name is written in English as "Shyarly". This is also how it appears in One Piece Vol. 62 Ch. 610 (Pg. 130 Panel 2).
