Set 30 years after the Zentradi war, Macross Plus follows the story of 2 pilots-- bitter rivals as they compete in a government test of a new transforming aircraft, and also compete for the affections of the woman who left them both.
The movie takes place some 30 years after the war with the Zentradi which was the subject of the original Macross series. The Macross fortress is back on Earth and the government, now worried about future alien threats, wants to commission a new generation of transforming aircraft. The testing takes place on the colony planet Eden. Two bitter rivals are competing in the test ,the first is Guld Goa Bowman who is piloting the YF21 which is totally controlled via a psychic link with its pilot. The second is Isamu Alva Dyson , who is piloting the YF19 which uses old fashioned manual controls. Both men could not be more different, Isamu is cocky and wreckless, and Guld is emotionless and methodical. If that was not bad enough a woman from both their pasts, Myung, unexpectedly returns seven years after their falling out. Myung is an ex-girlfriend to both men , and is now the producer of Sharon Apple, the galaxy's most successful pop star, whose computer-generated A.I. personality gradually spirals out of control and threatens them all.
