Machina is one of three dragons that work alongside human partners to defend the Earth from Thanatos.
She is first seen when the Lindworm unit is sent to capture "the album" (Toa). Her, along with Howling Star and Amadeus "actualize" ergo 'change into dragons'. This is the moment where the viewer should note Machina's affinity with water.
Unlike the other two dragons of the Lindworm unit she follows the commands of her human, Akira Souya, because she wants to, not out of servitude. She and Akira actually start to sabotage the efforts of the rest of the unit after Machina speaks with Toa and decides that it is not her fate to serve humanity forever, only her destiny. Machina tells Howling Star that the difference is that one can change their destiny.
In her dragon form Machina predictably gains powers of flight, along with the ability to shoot showers of ice crystals from her wings. In this form, Akira "pilots" Machina using verbal commands and some kind of puppet system.
In human or "communicator" form Machina is a stunningly attractive woman that uses a whip of water for her weapon.
As a person Machina is generally soft-spoken and kind, but not afraid to speak her mind. A trait that sets her appart from the other dragons in the Lindworm unit. She is also, to a degree, spiritual. Shown by the many reflections she makes during the series on her place in the chaos. The relationship between her and Akira is (as stated before) not one of master and servant, rather, Machina acts more like an older sister to Akira, a relationship that can be taken the wrong way by some. As Akira is often rude, impulsive, and (extensively) un-ladylike, Machina usually finds herself correcting her charge in the areas mentioned before. Although there are times at which Machina is unable to do anything about Akira's tomboyishness. In one instance where Akira and Machina spring Jin from confinement they spend the night in an abandoned, yet still clean, house on the outskirts of the city. Akira takes a shower and completely forgets that Jin was in the building, walking out into the living room completely nude. Classic facepalm from Machina.
