Luffy was inspired to be a great pirate by one of the greatest men he ever knew. Red Hair Shanks, a piate that sailed into Luffy's home town and made a promise that has driven his life ever since.

Opening Theme-

This episode has the first canon scene of Nami. Though there was no panda trap in the chest. Notice that the treasure she stole from Alvida is now gone. These story was actually told to Zoro by the pirates she tricked.

Odd that Luffy would panic so much about his hat being blown off since his arms can stretch great distances. These scenes with Zoro catching the hat didn't happen in the manga.

These scene of Luffy's childhood is accurate to the manga, but the scene of Luffy giving himself the scar below his eye was cut. In the manga Shanks fools Luffy with Milk.

Yasopp mentions being a pirate isn't about how fast you can swim, but Luffy couldn't swim even before he ate the Devil Fruit. He also makes reference to Usopp, but not by name.

In the manga Higuma showed Shanks his wanted poster. It's unknown how high Shanks bounty is.

This is the first time an actually Devil Fruit is scene in the anime, though it was shown in Morgan's description. Th the manga version the fruit was not actually shown. It was seen in a drawing by Lucky Roux. No one realized Luffy had even eaten the fruit until then noticed Luffy's arm stretch.

This episode has two of the most iconic moments in One Piece history. The scene of Shanks arm, and placing his straw hat on Luffy's head,
