One day, Lelouch is accidentally drawn into a conflict between the Britannian army and a resistance group that leads him to run into his childhood friend Suzaku -- now a member of the Britannian army, hoping to change the world from inside the system --and also a strange capsule. The capsule is opened and reveals a girl, who Lelouch attempts to save from the army in spite of his lack of physical prowess. Lelouch is eventually captured and the soldiers attempt to shoot him, only to have the mysterious girl jump in the bullet's way. He brushes against the girl and suddenly experiences a telepathic link with her. She offers him power in exchange for his promise to bring down the Britannian empire, and he readily agrees. Suddenly flowing with the power of "Geass," he looks the army soldiers in the eye and tells them to die. They obey, shooting themselves with their own guns.
After acquiring this power, Lelouch decides to use it and the local resistance group to form his anti-Britannian army, the Order of the Black Knights. At first he does well enough with this, although it results in the death of Euphemia when his Geass power gets the best of him and he is unable to turn it off briefly: he accidentally orders her to kill all Elevens, and is forced to kill her himself. Although he feels enormous guilt over this, he moves on in his quest for domination and peace. During this time he also has many interactions with Suzaku, who he eventually gives the Geass command "survive." Eventually Charles gets the better of him and alters the memories of everyone around him to forget about his time as Zero.
Leading into the second season, Lelouch has been living as his more typical prankster self at Ashford Academy, with Nunnally replaced by his new "brother" Rolo. His memories are restored by C.C.-- the girl who gave him his powers originally --and he begins plotting to escape the watch of Britannian Intelligence by blackmailing Villetta Nu and using his sister's maid Sayoko as his double. During this time, Nunnally is made the Viceroy of Area 11, and Lelouch is forced to pretend he doesn't remember who she is. It has always been his goal to recreate the world for him, but at this point Lelouch becomes aware that he also cares about the rest of his friends and Area 11, and he can no longer concern himself only with what is best for Nunnally. During this time Shirley, who once again stumbled upon Zero's activities, is killed by a jealous Rolo, who has joined Lelouch's side but wishes to keep his "brother's" affections for himself. From then on Lelouch can only see Rolo as a pawn and actively seeks a way to dispose of him once his usefulness is up.
The Black Knights eventually move into the Chinese Federation, where they wrestle control from the High Eunuchs (who serve as a sort of parliament) and hand it back to the young Empress Tianzi. With the Chinese Federation as their allies, Lelouch creates the United Federation of Nations, whose first act will be to liberate Tokyo. He swallows his pride and begs Suzaku to keep Nunnally safe, and his army moves in. At first the battle goes well but then the Suzaku, under the force of the "survive" Geass, activates the F.L.E.I.J.A. bomb, something akin to a nuclear bomb that kills thousands-- Nunnally thought to be among them. During this battle, Schneizel reveals Zero's identity to the Black Knights and replays a recording from his meeting with Suzaku, convincing them that Zero has betayed them.
The Black Knights join Schneizel's side and Lelouch is forced to flee with the help of Rolo, who dies in the attempt. Lelouch feels pity for Rolo at the last.
Lelouch sees only one path left after this: he must confront and defeat his father Charles, who has the ghost of Lelouch's mother, Marianne, at his side. For this task he is joined by Suzaku, and the two are able to kill both of their elders. Lelouch declares himself the Emperor of Britannia, and abolishes the class system and other opressive laws of the nation. He then continues on what he calls the "Zero Requiem," aggressively attempting to take control of the entire world. In this time he seems to completely sell his soul, even using his Geass power on Nunnally when she is revealed to not be dead-- and she opens her eyes for the first time.
He arranges for all of the Black Knights to be executed, and arranges a big parade for the event-- it mirrors the execution attempt from the first season in which Zero saves the rebel faction who become his core Black Knights, in fact. Suddenly, Zero appears: a new Zero (secretly Suzaku). This Zero stabs Lelouch in the heart. It is revealed to the audience (and, either by her intelligence or possibly her own mystical ability, Nunnally) that Lelouch planned all of this: he became the entire world's enemy so that after his death and with the help of Zero, the world could remain united. It's a major sacrifice for Suzaku, too, who must completely abandon his Suzaku identity and remain Zero forever more.
As his alter-ego Zero, the masked leader of the Order of the Black Knights, Lelouch is demanding and issues orders without always explaining their purpose. As such, some of his own soldiers don't always trust him. He is a decent mech pilot as well as being a spectacular strategist, but his own physical abilities are minimal at best.
In the end, he realizes that he must play the role that his father never really intended but nearly achieved: enemy of the entire world. Although he seems cruel and selfish, this is perhaps the most (or even only?) selfless act he commits in the entirety of the series.

Lelouch is a hyper-intelligent high school student with a deadly power and a desire to overthrow the Holy Empire of Britannia.
History
Unbeknownst to all of his current friends (except for the Ashford Academy student council president / daughter of the school owner Milly), Lelouch and his little sister Nunnally are actually members of the royal family of the Britannian Empire. As a child he lived happily with his mother Marianne, Nunnally, and his other half-siblings: Clovis, Cornelia, Euphemia, and Schneizel. But when Marianne was murdered and the Emperor of Britannia professes no interest in the murder, Lelouch rejected his family and entitlement to the throne. As a result, Emperor Charles zi Britannia banished both Lelouch and Nunnally to Japan, where they were used as political hostages by the Kururugi family. There, Lelouch first became friends with Suzaku Kururugi, the son of the prime minister. After Prime Minister Kururugi's murder/"suicide" and the conversion of Japan into Britannia's Area 11, however, Lelouch and his sister were taken and hidden by the Ashford family, who were allies of the late Empress. Since then, Lelouch and Nunnally have lived in a building on the Ashford Academy campus. Lelouch harbors a strong desire for vengeance against his father for his father's treatment of his mother, of his disabled younger sister, as well as Britannia's actions against Japan. One day, Lelouch is accidentally drawn into a conflict between the Britannian army and a resistance group that leads him to run into his childhood friend Suzaku -- now a member of the Britannian army, hoping to change the world from inside the system --and also a strange capsule. Personality
Super-intelligent and arrogant on the inside, Lelouch puts on a more affable personality amongst his friends. At school, he has a normal life: a close female friend named Shirley who has a crush on him, several other friends, a role in the student council, and excellent grades. He is particularly protective of Nunally, and saves his most sensitive and thoughtful self almost exclusively for her.As his alter-ego Zero, the masked leader of the Order of the Black Knights, Lelouch is demanding and issues orders without always explaining their purpose.
