He's the new recruit of the 17th Platoon and the protagonist of Chrome Shelled Regios. He wants to live a normal life and thus reluctant to fight but he possess incredible skill. (Anime is canon)
Layfon Alseif is the (semi-)protagonist of Chrome Shelled Regios. He's a former Heavens Blade receiver and as such an extremely talented fighter despite his young age. He was banished from his home town, Grendan and sworn to never practice Military Arts ever again. He went to Zuelni to start over but when he suddenly found himself in a fight he revealed his skill. He became the member of the 17th Platoon with Nina Antalk as his captain. He's initially reluctant to fight but the situation and the influence of Nina he slowly solves his problems and makes peace with being a Military Artists.
He's one of the three Heaven's Blade Successors assigned to kill Limbeekoom in the flashback part. Alongside Savaris and Lintence. Despite Limbekoom's near instant regeneration their combined attack defeated the monster. In present Layfon has been exiled from Grendan and after parting with Leerin he takes off to the Academy City of Zuelni. He wanted to retire from Military Arts but when the battle two Military Artists got out of hand he decided to interrupt their fight. He rescued Meishen and alerted both Nina and the Student Council President of his skill. Then he chases after a mysterious girl, Felli and witness her way of venting off frustration. They talk and become friends. Later the SCP calls him in and forces Layfon into Military Arts, just a little bit later Nina barges in and declares Layfon to be the new member of the 17th Platoon led by her.
Felli escorts Layfon to the the 17th Platoon's quarters where Nina tests Layfon's strength out. Layfon has little intention to fight and holds back. As a result he can't block Nina's blast and passes out. He wakes up at the infirmary with Felli. They talk and express how both of them doesn't like being forced to Military Arts. At night Layfon has part-time job at the Mechanical Department and meets Nina to his surprise. They work in the same shift and Layfon shares his bento(which he got from an unknown sender). Next day Layfon fights at the Military Arts Competition against the 16th Platoon. He still holds back but when sees the desperate situation Nina is in he quickly rushes out with renewed energy to aid her. He singlehandedly defeats the whole 16th Platoon and wins the match. Despite their victory both Nina and Felli aren't happy with Layfon's action(though for different reasons) and he gets cold shoulders.
To be continued...
Layfon is a genuinely kind person who appears to be timid at times. Compared to battles his experience with people is somewhat slim. As such he can be dull at times even if he can't be fooled easily. He's seemingly obvious to love and the other girls' feelings to him. Compared to that when he gets into a fight his instincts take over and he becomes awfully serious. His senses in battle are really sharp and he can accurately judge and guess what his opponent thinks. He rarely if ever hesitates in battle and never leaves any openings to his opponent. That is if he's in the right mindset. When he has something in mind or at the times he's reluctant to fight those feelings intervene with his instincts conditioned in the years of intense battle. It often shows on his performance and hinders him greatly. In both situations Layfon has little care for his own safety and appears to be almost self-sacrificial. Later we find out that Layfon has no real motivation for battle and as such he always searches for outside sources(mostly Nina) to fight.
Layfon's attitude and relationships with other people is slightly different in the Light Novel and the anime. Although generally they are unchanged but in some cases the differences are obvious. As such there'll be a mention of those at some characters. Be on guard! Some of the descriptions can be considered as spoiler!
She's Layfon's captain and the one who recruited him. In the anime her more forceful nature clashes with Layfon's cynical view quite often. It takes her a long time for her to make peace with Layfon's realistic and down-to-earth ideal. They are friends and they have the same part-time job at the cleaning department. Although Layfon always calls her Captain as a sign of his respect. Despite their occasional feuds they both trust each other and work well in battles. In the Light Novels Nina's character and her relationship with Layfon is quite different. She's the first person in Zuelni who gets to know Layfon's past. While she initially rejects him she quickly makes her mind up. She actively tries to help Layfon to open up and motivates him to accept his life as a Military Artist. Nina seeing Layfon's strength motivates her to get even stronger. It sometimes draws her to desperate levels which ends up in Layfon becoming her trainer. Their relationship is closer than in the anime and there are few things Layfon can only discuss with her. Nina understands Layfon's Military Artists side the best. Layfon admires Nina's willpower and resolve although it's a mystery if he has any romantic feelings for her. On the other hand despite her long denial Nina now has strong feelings for Layfon.
Harley is the Dite Mechanic of the team and Layfon is on a good terms with him. Layfon is amongst the few who can somehow understand the complicated technical terms Harley use at Dite tuning.
Sharnid is the team's sniper and Layfon's upperclasman. As such Sharnid often gives him advices and tries to motivate the somehow oblivious Layfon to have more interest for girls. His seemingly free-spirited friendly attitude makes him easy to get on well with.
Felli is the psychokinesist of the 17th Platoon. Her seemingly emotionless surface makes her hard to approach but Layfon quickly gets friendly with her. Like Layfon she also strives to be normal and hates her power which forced her into Military Arts. As Layfon changes to be more active in Military Arts Felli first questions him then she gradually starts to change too. She quickly develops romantic feelings for him but Layfon seemingly unaware of that. She's quite jealous and whether Layfon gets close to girl or fails to notice Felli's feelings she acts abusive or mean with him(generally shows in kicks in the anime). Felli understands Layfon's reasons for being relucant to fight and she's the most devoted to help him.
He's the little brother of Savaris and thus a student from Grendan. He knows Layfon and his reason why he was exiled. He hates him and he would even kill him if he wouldn't know about Layfon's strength. As the story progresses he gets a little friendlier and trusts Layfon more.
She's a close friend of Gorneo and as such she hates Layfon. Unlike Gorneo though she's expressive of that feeling and she even tried to kill him once. Like Gorneo she accepts Layfon a bit more later.
Captain of the 1st Platoon. Despite Karian's words he was quite skeptic at first about Layfon's strength. After Layfon's first battle he developed some respect for him. They rarely interact though and even then Vance is purely business-like.
They are at the same year as Layfon and he often hangs out with them. He saved Meishen on the first day of school and she developed a crush for him. Naruki and Mifi tries to help out their friend to get together with Layfon but as usual Layfon is unaware of Meishen's feelings. Meishen wants to know more about Layfon and her feeling develops into love. Due to her shy nature though she haven't confessed yet. In the Light Novels Naruki later becomes a member of the 17th Platoon. She's first terrifyed at Layfon's power but she's later like Nina strives to become stronger to be more useful for the team.
He's the one who forced Layfon into Military Arts. That and that he did the same with his own daughter made Layfon hate him at first. Later as he sees how hard he works for Zuelni he forgives him and even comes to admire him a little.
She's Layfon's childhood friend from the orphanage at Grendan. She and Layfon were very close and Layfon though about her as a sibling. Leerin is in love with him on the other hand and when Layfon was banished she kissed him. He often thinks about her even at Zuelni. Later in the anime and in the Light Novels Leerin comes to Zuelni and the two meet once again. As a childhood friend Leerin understands Layfon the most. Although she's alien to Layfon's life as a Military Artist. At Zuelni she helps him to further resolve his conflicts of being a Military Artist. Layfon seems to slowly realize he loves her.
The leader of Layfon's orphanage. He's like a father to Layfon and he was the one who initially thought him Military Arts. He felt he had betrayed him with his deed which resulted in his banishment. As such Layfon swore to never do Military Arts anymore. Her reluctance to use katana bores even deeper, since the time he became a Heavens Blade receiver. Later Deruk sends Leerin with the Psyharden katana as a sign he had forgiven Layfon.
She's the one who banished Layfon. In her view the Heaven Blade receivers are tools who serve Grendan and her unconditionally. Despite that she has some care for them and as such for Layfon. She believes that Layfon would return once after he matured a little.
Layfon describes him as a "fighting maniac" and they fought together a few times. Since the time he, Layfon and Lintence fought with the Mature-form Filth Monster, Savaris had an increased attention of him. When the Queen assings him the duty to escort Leerin he eagerly accepts it. He wants to compete against Layfon to test his strength.
Layfon's teacher and trainer when he became a Heavens Blade reciever. He is the only student Lintence had ever took in. According to Lintence there is no one better at understanding Kei techniques than Layfon.
Layfon as an ex-successor of the Heavens Blade possess incredible fighting power. Compared to a regular Military Arts student he's a monster with unimaginable strength which is enough to beat a Filth Monster one-on-one. He's holding back greatly and because he's yet to mature his power fluctuates sometimes depending on his mood.
Kei: Layfon has an unnaturally high amount of Kei. That and her extraordinary skill at Kei are what made him into a Heavens Blade receiver at the age of 10. Although because of his high Kei only the best Dites can contain his full power. Anything below that is prone to break.
Strength: His high amount of Kei gives him great physical strength. He can effortlessly push a regular Military Artist away with a gentle toss or slice through the hard carapace of Filth Monsters. Although by Heavens Blade standards he isn't that extraordinary. He leans on his Kei output more.
Agility: Layfon has incredible agility. He can move so fast that a regular Military Artist can't follow him. Layfon is a master at dodging and evading incoming attacks. His honed fighting instincts lets him determine each move of the opponent and act accordingly. With the help of external Kei bursts he can also briefly keep himself in the air. Also with he can pull of various acrobatic maneuvers with his Steel Threads.
Learning: Layfon can learn new techniques just by experiencing them once or a few times. The only exceptions are the techniques at the level of Heavens Blade which needs more effort and even then he generally can't copy them perfectly.
Sight: Layfon has his sight enhanced with Kei to see further. Additionally he can see the flow of Kei in a very detailed way and later he learned how to see clearly at night. His sight is so precise that he can see millimeter thin or less wires from tens of meters.
External Kei Bursts: Layfon can use a wide diversity of External Kei techniques. He can shoot those blasts at long distance with extreme precision. In terms of raw power he's no slouch either and his moves can be very devestating. He can keep up with his ex-fellow Heavens Blade receiver, Savaris in terms of power.
Stamina: Layfon can fight three days straight with only minor signs of exhaustion. Although he's mentally not exactly on that level and despite his body can take it even longer his mind starts to get overwhelmed by then.
Sakkei: This is a common technique amongst Military Artists to hide their Kei signature. Layfon is an expert in this as well as detecting people who try to hide with this technique.
Internal Kei - Uzukei(Whirl Kei): Layfon can suddenly speed up for an instant for dodge or for surprise attacks. Compared to a regular Military Artist though he can turn and steer while using this technique instead of moving in a straight direction.
External Kei- Uzukei(Whirl Kei): Layfon generates a cone of tornado around himself, pulling up punishing with ravaging wind and Kei pressure anyone who have caught in it. This move's quite effective against multiple opponents.
External Kei - Needle Kei: Layfon focuses the force of the external Kei burst into a small point. Needle Kei has more concentrated power and can travel longer than a regular burst. Layfon has such control over his Kei that he can form the path of the Needle Kei blast with relative freedom, like splitting it into two parts mid-flight to aim at two opponents instead of one.
External Kei - Nanao (Nine Bullets): Layfon shoots out concentrated thin bullets of Kei from his fingers. The bullets have a slight homing ability and they can tear through building walls with moderate ease.
External Kei - Bakushikou(Exploding Blade Hole): Layfon pierces his opponent and releases his external Kei inside as an explosion.
External Kei - Sendan(Flash): Following a heavy sword swing Layfon releases a strong flash of Kei with devastating results. Even with heavily inferior Dite Layfon could blast away a large section of the building.
External Kei - Kakei: Layfon releases a strong gust of wind with the swing of his sword.
External Kei - Enreki: Layfon releases a wind burst which pulls everyone around him up and knocks them away.
External Kei - Shou Kei: Layfon swings down with his sword and releases a large pillar of light infused with Kei. with the assistance of the Heavens Blade Layfon can execute this move with colossal force.
Internal Kei – Sound to War: Layfon releases huge sound enhanced by Kei to disorient and confuse people. It works at great distances though only on weak opponents. With the control Layfon has he can somehow chose whom to effect with this.
Internal Kei - Fleeting Shadow: Layfon speeds up like with Whirl Kei while creating numerous afterimages. There's also a variation of that which uses those afterimage duplicates to surround the opponent.
Kongoukei (Reinforced Gold Body Kei): This is a powerful defensive move. Layfon focuses his Kei at one area on his body where he's about to recieve the attack. If the timing and placement is right Kongoukei can absorb the whole attack. While not a really exotic ability this is what made Reverse a Heavens Blade successor. Layfon learned this technique by watching him.
Internal Kei - The Thousand Killers: Layfon splits himself into numerous clones. The clones can fight independently for a short while. Layfon stole this move from Savaris by just seeing it. He can't use it that well though. His limit is at about 30 copies or a bit more.
External Kei – Ryusenkei: Layfon releases his Kei like a concentrated whirlwind to counter incoming attacks and throw everyone in the vicinity away. This move can also block flames and work like a fire suppressor if needed.
External Kei – Flame Cut: Layfon can heat up the Kei to coat his blade in fire. It’s is a strong melee attack and comparable to Sendan in power. Flame Cut has many variations like: Flame Return, that means a second swing immediately after the first one. Flame Weight, a strong downward slash. Flying Blade, which means exchanging attacks in the middle of a headlong charge.
External Kei – Weight of Flame. Red Cloth: Layfon swings down his blade and releases a rain of intense flames at his foe.
External Burst - Rumbling Sword: flexing his kei to the maximum (which also changes color to red due to his fury), Layfon's using Heaven's Blade fires light bullet of red. This's Layfon strongest attack up to date, strong enough to create giant hole in Duridana through vaporization and shake Grendan.
External Kei - Roar Kei: Like with the Thousand Killers Layfon stole this technique by observing Savaris. Layfon releases a Kei-filled vibration weave in a shout. It's weaker than Savaris' and Layfon only uses it as a defensive move.
External Kei - Jaryu: Layfon forms numerous Kei thin Kei threads. They transfer the power of his Kei and the force of his attacks. Although Layfon admitted that he can't really use this well and prefers the Steel Threads instead.
External Kei - Gajiya(Hungry Snake): Layfon releases a burst of external Kei to propel his own sword in a circular manner. He spins and gains momentum until he hits the target. Layfon learned this move by observing Cauntia, one of the Hevens Blade successors using it.
Psyharden Technique - Foushintou(Projection of the Sealed Heart): This move shoots out numerous small Kei needless at the opponent with surgial precision. The needles attack the Kei Vein, cripling the Military Artist's ability to produce Kei.
Psyharden Technique - Rot: This move specializes in destroying the opponent's weapon. Layfon hits the opponent's weapon and sends his Kei inside to destroy that. On success the opponent ends up disarmed.
Psyharden Technique - Snake Fall: Layfon releases his Kei in a form of spiraling storm from above his opponent. It can be called the inversion of Whirl Kei.
Psyharden technique – Hamonnu: This is a technique against Filth Monsters. The winds released by Layfon peels of the protective carapace of the Filth Monster at that area.
Psyharden Technique -Water Mirror: Similar but greater to Whirl Kei in terms of speed. Layfon used this move to outspeed Savaris in the Novels.
Heavens Blade Technique -Kasumirou: Layfon swings down and the same time rleases his Kei inside the Filth Monster. It makes numerous cuts inside the monster's body and ends slices the monster in two. Layfon used this technique at the first episode though he didn't call its name.
Layfon often changed swords in the course of the story. They had varying strengths and weaknesses and some even had special features unique to that weapon.
Safaidite: Layfon's Dite at Zuelni which goes through many modifications. Harley constantly improves it and tunes it to a shape best fits Layfon. There are three distinct stages:
Adamantine Dite: After Layfon saved Zuelnifrom the first Filth Monster attack; Karian issued to the Mechanic Department(including Harley) to construct a sword fit for Layfon to kill Filth Monsters. They came out with the Adamantine Dite. The Dite is about twice as large and more than trice as heavy as a normal Dite but Layfon can swing it with a similar ease. The Adamantine Dite allows Layfon to channel his Kei better for additional power. As a trade-off the Adamantine Dite is relatively fragile and can break easily when Layfon really forces it.
Psyharden Katana: This is an ancient Dite possessed by the founder of the Psyharden school. Deruk asked Leerin to take it to Layfon. While reluctantly but Layfon accepted it and used it both in the anime and the light novels. There are no confirmation but it's been speculated that the Psyharden Katana is a little bit better than the Safaidite for controlling Kei.
Heavens Blade: The only Dite so far which allowed Layfon to release hs full amount of Kei without destroying his weapon. He used it in the past as a Heavens Blade successor at Grendan. After his banishment they took his Heavens Blade, naturally. His former seat is still empty as the Queen has yet to find a fitting successor. There's a slim chance he'll get his blade back. In the anime it actually happened for a brief time in the last episode.
"Surf Sword": The fan nickname of the anime original merge of the Psyharden Katana and the Heavens Blade. The new sword possessed even greater power and let Layfon to use the large sheet of the blade as a surfboard for air-surfing.
