A very powerful S-Class mage of the Fairy Tail guild, and the grandson of Fairy Tail master Makarov and son of Raven Tail master Ivan.He is the heir of the guild and is well known for his immense power and arrogant/confident attitude.

Origin

Creation

Laxus, who is created by Hiro Mashima, does not have any notes from the author so far regarding any inspiration used to create him. However, his name is based off the unit of luminous emittance, Lux. He made his first appearance in Chapter 24 of the manga and Episode 10 of the anime. He is voiced by Katsuyuki Konishi in the Japanese version and Patrick Seitz in the English version.

Character Evolution

Personality

Laxus, as seen by the people of Magnolia, is a very confident individual (they also refer to him as a hooligan). Although he was a member of the guild for a very long time, he prefers to be a loner and rarely socializes himself with fellow members. Though cocky at times, in that he banters on Fairy Tail's "disgraces", Laxus has high respects for powerful mages, including Gildarts but looks down on weak members as well (i.e. Laxus calls Erza weak, despite her being an S-Class mage). He also has the essence of leadership like Makarov, though he rarely shows his skills to everyone or he lies to himself. Despite his arrogant behavior,  deep down Laxus loves his fellow guildmates, and the amount of his leadership is reflected by the Raijinshuu Tribe. Laxus has changed during the final moments of the Fighting Festival arc. Humbled by Natsu, he now understands his mistakes, and therefore he is now more open to others.

Major Story Arcs

Galuna Island Arc

"Im the most powerful wizard of Fairy Tail! And I wont give up the position to anyone!"
"Im the most powerful wizard of Fairy Tail! And I wont give up the position to anyone!"
Laxus makes his anime debut after Mystogan put all of the guild members to sleep before taking a mission from the board. Like Makarov, Laxus is the only Fairy Tail member who doesn't succumb to Mystogan's sleep magic, making him one of the few to know his true identity. Laxus also knew that Happy stole the S-ranked mission "Cursed Island", and despite Makarov and Mirajane asking him to take Natsu and his group back, he refuses to do so.

Phantom Lord Arc

After Makarov is defeated by Phantom Lord and it is clear that a war is brewing between the two  opposing guilds, Cana and Mirajane try to summon together as many members of the guild as they can, specifically the two active S-ranked members, Laxus and Mystogan. Mirajane asks Laxus to come back but he says that he would only come back if Lucy will become his girl, if the master retires and if Cana would strip for him. Mira destroys the orb before he continues and wonders why such a person is a part of Fairy Tail. After the conflict with Phantom Lord, Laxus returns and makes fun of the guild being demolished and "humiliated" by a lowly guild. And after his quarrel with Erza and Natsu, he claimed that when he would inherit the guild, he would erase all the weak members and make the strongest guild in the country. This is also the chapter where Lucy discovers that Laxus is actually Makarov's grandson.

Fighting Festival Arc

As Laxus enters a local pub, he overhears people poking fun at Fairy Tail (due to the release of a magazine article about the guild). He sends them running with a single glance and makes tensions against an ape man, Zod. With a single hit, Laxus was thrown out of the bar. Zod, proud of what he's done, boasts his strength and continues to banter on Fairy Tail. However, in a split second, he is struck by lightning, nearly getting killed in the process. The angry Laxus then states that Fairy Tail is pathetic. After this, he finds Jet and Droy beating up Gajeel and joins in but he tries to kill him. As Levy begs him to stop, he shoots a lighting bolt at her which Gajeel takes in stead; with this, Laxus leaves even angrier.

At the market, Mirajane and Makarov pick up groceries for the incoming festival. Mirajane tells Makarov that Laxus is in town and that it would be great if he participates in Fantasia. Despite this, Makarov told her to stop talking about him, and remembers Laxus when he was still a little boy. At Makarov's flashback, Laxus was in fact a kind boy, and they displayed a strong father-son relationship with another. Makarov is left wondering how Laxus came to be what he is now.

Young Laxus
Young Laxus
Unknown to everyone, Laxus is planning a takeover of the guild, hiding it in a form of a tournament. By the return of the Raijinshuu (Laxus' personal bodyguards Evergreen, Bixlow, and the captain Fried), Laxus begins his plan by taking the Fairy Tail girls as hostage by turning them into stone with Evergreen's power and sets the rules of the game. The rules were simple. It was to find and eliminate Laxus and his guards before time runs out, and if they don't, the girls will be smashed to pieces. During the tournament, Fried's runes were used to pit each Fairy Tail member against each other, where the one who wins is free from the trap. With this, Fairy Tail had massive losses and Makarov admits defeat, but Laxus tells him it isn't that easy and explains his true intentions. Makarov, despite of him wanting to retire, claims that Laxus isn't ready for the burden of becoming the new master, thus continuing the tournament. As Natsu manages to release Erza (due to her artificial eye giving her resistance to Evergreen's spell), Mystogan joins the fray and heads on in search of Laxus. As the tournament progresses, Erza defeats Evergreen and relieves the other girls from the stone spell, with Fried telling Laxus that the tournament is over. Angered by this, Laxus decides to make new rules of the game, by raising the "Hall Of Thunder"

Hearing this, Makarov was devastated and was hit with a minor heart attack and with the remaining time Gajeel, Natsu and Erza began to look for Laxus. Laxus, waiting in the Kardia Cathedral, receives flashbacks of his teenage years and remembers a certain event between him and his grandfather. His flashback refers to the time that Makarov excommunicated Ivan, Laxus' father and Makarov's son.  After the flashback, he was interrupted by Mystogan, who finally found him. The two S-Class mages started exchanging words, debating on who is the strongest mage in Fairy Tail. Mystogan then states that Laxus has a small viewpoint in life, and calmly proposed Gildarts as being the strongest member. Laxus then stated that Gildarts would never return and Erza is on the right track, but is still weak.

Laxus then claims that their battle will be the one that would decide the most powerful mage. Mystogan attacks first with a very powerful illusion magic, the "Tower of Babel", but was resisted by Laxus. The two then exchange attacks against each other, seeming to be on equal terms. Before either can strike again, Erza and Natsu arrive at the cathedral, distracting Mystogan and causing him to cover his face. Laxus then blasts a direct amount of lighting at Mystogan's face, vaporizing his mask and revealing Mystogan's face. In Natsu and Erza's shock, Mystogan's face resembled Jellal's. Mystogan stated that he knows Jellal, but he isn't him, and vanishes. While Erza is confused, Laxus electrocutes her, stunning her in the process. The angered Natsu then charges in, being beat up by Laxus as a result in multiple engagements. Before Natsu could attack again, Erza stops him and fights Laxus herself. During their duel, Laxus explains to Erza the purpose of  "Hall of Thunder" and that each lacryma had a "body link" magic attached to them, making them untouchable. They continue their duel until Natsu exclaims that he could fight Laxus himself. With this, Erza agrees and leaves to stop the Hall of Thunder and to save Magnolia. Laxus and Natsu then continue their battle.

During Laxus and Natsu's engagement, the Hall of Thunder was successfully destroyed by Erza and the remaining Fairy Tail mages. Angered, Laxus snaps and releases a devastating aura, stating that he shouldn't have bargained, and that he should have done everything by himself with his overwhelming energy. Natsu lands the first punch, but without doing any damage, was blown away by Laxus' lightning. Furious, Laxus retaliates with multiple combos, and nearly killing Natsu with his spell "Raging Bolt". As the smoke clears from the devastation, Laxus mocks Natsu and that he was turned to ashes, but in fact was saved by Gajeel. Gajeel advises Natsu that they should work together to beat Laxus, seeing that Laxus is too powerful and that they are the only fighters remaining. Gajeel and Natsu start to attack Laxus in melee, but are easily deflected and countered. But as Natsu is able to sneak up on Laxus, they gained the upper hand, landing multiple Dragon Slayer attacks on him and finalizing it with very powerful Dragon Roars. As the smoke clears, Laxus is seen unhurt, and mocks the power of the Dragon Slayers. As the two Dragon Slayers stand in disbelief, Laxus says that its pretty simple, and that he kept it as a secret.

Laxus starts emanating traces of lightning in his body, his upper body starts to bulk up, canines sharpen and scales starts appearing in his forearms. Natsu and Gajeel realized that in that moment, Laxus was a Dragon Slayer too. Laxus starts to cast the Lightning Dragon's Roar and aims directly at the two. The devastating wave left the two paralyzed, and surprised Laxus that they were still alive. The crazed Laxus then states that he will eliminate everyone and starts casting the most powerful magical spell yet seen, "Fairy Law".

Laxus ignores Natsu's plea and warnings and hears Levy shouting to him. Levy pleads Laxus to stop and go to his grandfather, who is on deaths door. Amused, Laxus saw this as an opportunity to take the title of guild master, and laughs leaving Levy, Natsu and Gajeel in shock. He then invokes Fairy Law, and engulfs Magnolia in light. As the spell finishes, he pridefully states that he surpassed his grandfather, but in his surprise, Natsu, Gajeel and Levy are still alive. As Fried enters the cathedral, he states that no one was hurt. He explains that Laxus still had feelings for his comrades and that Fairy Law only affects those he considered as his enemies. Fried then advises Laxus to stop and see the master. Denying this to be true, Laxus activates his Dragon Force again, and as Natsu, free from paralysis, activates Dragon Force as well. Natsu charges in but Laxus punches him down. In Laxus' shock, Natsu still stands up; while the crying levy begs Natsu to stop or he might be killed. Irritated, Laxus then casts "Lightning Dragon's Heavenward Halberd" a spell that according to Fried, is enough to kill Natsu. Laxus hurls the halberd straight at Natsu, but was redirected by Gajeel in a split second, who used himself as a lightning rod. Laxus, without energy left, can only stand in disbelief while Natsu gathers up his remaining energy and release his dragon killing attacks. Natsu then defeats Laxus with a secret technique of the "Crimson Lotus".

Back at the guild, where the guild members recover, Makarov is reported to be doing well. Despite the damage and injuries, Fantasia will still be held, but Natsu and Gajeel (being covered with bandages and support) might not able to participate. As the guild prepares for it, Laxus enters and asks where his grandfather is. Despite everyone being angry at him, Erza asks them to stop and tells Laxus that Makarov is in the clinic. As Laxus makes his way there, he is blocked by an angry Natsu, who was murmuring words that cannot be understood (as his mouth was covered with bandages). Gajeel, who surprisingly understands Natsu, states that Natsu wants to challenge Laxus fairly one-on-one, and he wouldn't count it a win since Laxus fought so many. Gajeel also claimed that Laxus is a monster and that he cannot imagine if Laxus participated in the war with Phantom Lord. Inside the clinic, Makarov explains to Laxus the importance of being the leader of a guild, and that he should relax and enjoy life. Because of all the things Laxus did, he is excommunicated. Laxus calmly leaves the clinic thanking his crying grandfather. He then explains to the Raijinshuu of his expulsion and leaves them in shock. Fried claims that they will see each other once again.

During Fantasia, Laxus is seen with the crowd. Seeing his grandfather on a float, he remembers a childhood moment in which he creates a hand sign for his grandfather to see, stating that he will always be watching. As Laxus begins heading his way, he turns one more time and is stunned to see Makarov doing the hand sign he made, followed by the guild members. Crying, Laxus thanks his grandfather for everything and leaves.

Powers & Abilities

Laxus is a mage that can easily be second to Gildarts in terms of power. He mastered Lightning Magic, and makes use of devastating waves and combos to easily kill his enemies in a single engagement. Laxus also has other spells that contributes to his arsenal, using light magic (Fairy Law), Body Link or even Thought Projection. Adding to his Lightning Magic, Laxus can turn himself into Lightning and also activate Dragon Force, specifically pertaining to the Lightning Dragon Slayer Magic. He is also known for his large energy reserves, as he fights against four powerful mages, he already used his energy for raising Hall of Thunder and attaching Body Link magic on them.
