Lavi is an exorcist and member of the Black Order. He is very cheerful. He aims to be a bookman one day. He loves to tease Allen very often.
Lavi began training at a very young age to become the next Bookman. Along with the job comes taking many different names and Lavi has thus far had a total of 49 different aliases. Lavi is in fact not his true name, only his most recent. He has bore witness to numerous wars despite his apparent young age, which caused him to view humankind as very foolish. He developed photographic memory as part of his training so that he could more accurately record events as they happened. Despite his negative views of humanity, Lavi lightened up when he finally settled down as an Exorcist in the Black Order European Branch.
When Lavi and his master Bookman joined the Black Order, it was during a funeral. He saw Lenalee Lee for the first time while attending. After a couple months of being at the Order, Lavi had gained a rather unpleasant reputation, and when a virus created by ever experimenting Komui Lee, the Branch Chief was completed, Johnny and the other scientists made efforts to hide this fact from Lavi.
After another span of time, Lavi was acquainted with Doug who was a Finder at the Branch. Even though Doug distrusted Lavi because of his demeanor and unreadable eyes, they did become friendly with one another after Lavi saved Doug's life. Doug was Lavi's first friendly acquaintance since he joined the Black Order. Approximately a year later, they met with one another again as they were assigned to be a team for a new mission. After investigating the French Town of Elysee, Lavi was satisfied with his search and decided to leave. But Doug stayed behind a bit longer because he had become particularly friendly with a young lady there named Colette. But misfortune befell them when Colette was abruptly killed. Perhaps not too surprising, the grieving Doug was visited by the Earl of Milennium who said he could bring Colette back to life. Doug agreed but in doing so, unknowingly submitted himself to be turned into and Akuma. No longer in control of his own actions, Doug went back to the Order, sneaked into the headquarters and began wrecking havoc, killing several of his own allies. Lavi was there and although shocked and horror stricken, he had no choice but to confront his friend. Soon after, Doug was no more at Lavi's own hands. Lavi was brought to tears but he had trained himself to be hardhearted and did not even realize his tears. Shortly after these events, Lavi and Bookman were assigned to join Allen and Lenalee to assist with the events of the Rewinding Town.
Lavi is one of the main characters created by Hoshino Katsura for the series D.Gray Man. Lavi was in fact originally intended to be the main protagonist of the series by the name of Book-Man. But at the last moment, Hoshino Katsura switched him for Allen Walker and changed the title to D. Gray Man.
Lavi is an apparently young man for fair height, standing nearly 6' 1" (185 cm) . He has a good looking face with light skin and a lean body. His head, which is usually covered by a bandana, is full of slightly long scarlet hair. He has bright green eyes but one has always been covered by an eye-patch. It isn't currently known why he wears the patch because Lavi stated that his eye was not injured.
He wears the fairly typical tight fitting pants and boots that exorcists wear and a slightly longer than average exorcist coat. But his bandana and scarf are his own requested add-ons. He is equipped with his innocence hammer, which init's normal state is not much larger than a standard mallet and actually has a smaller than normal handle. He wears it on his high. He also wears simple silver loop earrings. Later in the story, Lavi does not wear the bandana and he wears his hair down.
Lavi is a man of many personalities, usually depending on the point of his life. He has had periods of being cold and hardhearted, sly and mischievous, funny and kind and even selflessness. His current self tends to be a mixture of goofy, moral-led and pleasant although often getting on people's nerves. He adopted this personality after joining the Black Order where he made many friends and acquaintances.
Lavi alongside his mentor Bookman are first introduced directly after the Allen and Lenalee had completed their objective in the Rewinding Town. The duo were sent their to assist but arrived late. After Allen was released from the hospital, Komui Lee called in and asked for updates on the antagonistic Noah Family. Lavi tried explaining to Komui in his own way, but was quickly stopped and kicked out of the room by Bookman for his incompetence in explaining and explained to Komui himself. Lavi and Allen made snowmen as they spoke to one another. Allen became upset when they started speaking of fighting and killing the Noah because they were humans and left in anger. But Allen quickly realized that his pentacle eye was damaged because Road Kamelot had gauged it out during his torture session. He was unable to see Akuma in disguis as he had been able to since his early childhood and was ambushed by an Akuma. But Lavi had followed and saved the vulnerable Allen. Lavi explained that Allen was unique in that he could see Akuma clearly and that for the moment he was like the rest of them, being unable to distinguish the Akuma from humans. He said that he always considered Humans as enemies as they were easily made into tools for the Earl of Millennium.
Lavi once again with his mentor Bookman alongside him, join with Allen and Lavi in their search of Cross Marian. Allen got separated from everybody else and Lavi is forced to look for him by Bookman and Lenalee. He finds Allen tied up in rope by the villagers who were trying to force Allen to stay so that he could exorcise the local Vampire. When Lavi is spotted, he finds himself tied up beside Allen since he was also recognized as an exorcist. Reluctantly, Allen and Lavi accompany the desperate villagers to see if they could help. Surely enough, they find the vampire the villagers spoke of. His name was Arystar Krory and the first thing he does when spotted was kill a by-standing man. Seeing all that they needed, Lavi and Allen attack him immediately, but are pushed back by the Vampire's superior physical prowess. When Krory got behind Allen, he bit him in the neck, but was horrified by the taste and fled, ending the battle for the time. Now that Allen was bitten by a vampire, Lavi gathered some garlic and a stake in case they might need to be used on Allen. When Allen noticed and got upset, Lavi left them behind stating that it was a joke.
They track Krory to his castle, but upon arriving, they are attacked by Krory's man-eating flowers. Lavi noticed a woman named Eliade and immediately fell for her, but Allen snapped him out of it and figured out how to escape from the flowers. Once free, the duo follow Krory to the graveyard outside the castle. They searched the graveyard and soon realized that not only were the grave's Krory's victims, but they were not actually humans, rather Akuma and hence, Krory was an exorcist and not their enemy. When they are confronted by Krory again, they tried reasoning with Krory rather than fighting, but Krory would not listen and he brushed them aside, focusing his attention on Eliade, the woman from earlier. Lavi continued his assault on Krory, but in the meantime, Allen's damaged pentacle eye had just recovered but it was now more efficient than before. With his newly evolved pentacle eye, Allen was able to share his vision with those around him and in doing so, showed both Lavi and Krory that Eliade was in fact a disguised Akuma that was tricking Krory all along. Furious at the deception, Krory killed Eliade himself.
In the aftermath, Allen persuaded Krory to accompany them, but not before Krory burned his castle to the ground so that there was no turning back. Lavi reported the situation to Komui Lee and expressed that while initially envious of Allen's unique pentacle eye, he now saw it as a curse that made the world seen through it look like hell. The now trio of exorcists, returned to the train and re-joined Lenalee and Bookman. They were quick to befriend the slightly depressed Krory.
Continuing their mission to find General Cross Marian, the group of 5 Exorcists made their way to China. They were immediately attacked by Akuma upon arrival. After a scuffle, they managed to get away and met up with a woman named Anita, the owner of a brothel and an intimate acquaintance of General Cross. Once inside her home, she informs them that Cross had only left 8 days earlier and was set for Japan's capital city Edo. After receiving that information, the group were prepared to depart right away, but Anita offered to lend them her ship on the condition that she could accompany them as her feelings for General Cross had not faded. The terms were accepted but before the group could even depart the shores of China, they were attacked by a swarm of Akuma again. Allen and Lenalee followed the Akuma while Lavi and the others stayed behind to guard the ship and the crew.
Allen and Lenalee were separated when they came across a Fallen One. Lenalee returned to the ship alone and asked for Lavi's help in searching for him. Lavi and Lenalee searched but only found Allen's golem Timcanpy who was in possession of Suman Dark the Fallen One's Innocence as well as a holographic recording of what had transpired. The recording revealed Allen's defeat by Tyki Mikk of the Noah Family. When Lavi and Lenalee rushed to the spot where Allen's defeat took place, they found only blood and a scattered deck of cards left by Tyki. Lavi and Lenalee were horrified but were called by Sammo Han Won and ordered not to delay any further.
Shortly thereafter, the group are joined by Miranda Lotto. Along with her, the group were brought new uniforms. Miranda used her time turning ability to temporarily repair the damaged ship and they continued on their way. Lavi got upset visually for the first time upon seeing Lenalee's depressed state due to Allen's death. Lavi angrily tried to tell her that they were not to blame, but it only caused Lenalee to cry. Bookman in turn grew angry with Lavi and scolded him once he pulled him aside for acting as though he were God's apostle, but did it under the guise that he upset Lenalee. Again Lavi was reminded that as a Bookman, they were to be emotionless at all times.
Iron Hammer is a weapon that can alter it's size at Lavi's will. It can grow in overall size or length. As it grows and extends, naturally the weight and mass of the hammer increases, but as the Accommodator of Iron Hammer, the weight change does not affect Lavi's ability to wield it in the least. It can be elongated to such lengths that Lavi uses Iron Hammer as a form of psuedo-flight by anchoring one end of it to the ground and extending it astronomically, possibly up to kilometers. The upper limit to the Iron Hammer's size growth in not known. Lavi does not like the actual name of Iron Hammer so he calls it Big Hammer and Little Hammer depending on it's form.
Like his fellow exorcists Aleen, Lenalee and Kanda, Lavi's Innocence at one point is damaged. But it is rebuilt with a different appearance now being both longer and more narrow in it's default state.
Iron Hammer allows Lavi much more than just raw power and range. It also enables him to summon elemental power that he calls judgements. He has many seals available for use, totaling at least 8, but so far, Lavi has used only three of his judgements, Wood, Fire and Heaven. The seals of Water and Earth are noted among the unused seals. Using these seals, Lavi can directly manipulate the elements and the climate within a limited range. Because of this, Lavi has demonstrated the greatest scale out of all his allies in terms of the effective range of his techniques.
Lavi smashes the ground with Iron Hammer and a fire seal is formed. Flames are summoned and form a fire snake which can be controlled by Lavi's will.
Lavi creates the Heaven seal and manifests a storm with crackling lightning.
Using the wood stamp, Lavi can manipulate the atmosphere.
Lavi creates a vortex of wind.
Combining the stamps of Heaven and Fire, Lavi creates a giant snake of iron clad in flames. This can also be used to create a flaming iron wall of defense.
