The character has known the protagonist for a long time, typically all his/her life. If he/she's from the opposite gender there's a high chance he/she has a crush on the main character. |

Convenient Censorship
Convenient Censorship such as steam, hair and beams of light are often used in anime and manga to show naked characters while obscuring their "naughty bits". |

Crazy Anime Hair
Huge spikes, multiple colors, gravity-defying ponytails... and it's probably all natural somehow too. |

Dojikko
In anime, a cute, clumsy girl. Her klutziness usually hurts other people more than herself. |

Espionage
This is the act of secretly watching a person or group to gather information, often for political purposes. Spies typically disguise themselves so that they might sneak around. Espionage is also frequently tied to assassination plots. |

Exaggerated Emotional Iconography
Common visual conventions seen in manga and anime to convey emotions, often for comical effect. |

Face Between Breasts
When a character has had their face put in the middle of a girls breasts. Though most of the time it may be on accident. Other times it shows sexual relationship between a man and a woman. |

Fan Service
Fan Service is often a sexually provocative moment or pose that takes place in manga and anime. It usually has no real purpose to a story, and serves as a lurid visual. |

Flashback
Used frequently in Anime to either recap past events or provide a back story for a character, either their origin story or their off-screen training of new attack. Sometime and entire episode/chapter would be a entire flashback. |

Gainax Bounce
The "Gainax Bounce" refers to breasts bouncing around gratuitously in anime, often in ways that seem to defy physics. |

Kissing
Kissing is the act of pressing your lips to the body of another person. This can be on the cheeks, head, hand, but more commonly to another person's lips. |

Lecher
Characters who exercise their strong libidinous desires in unwholesome ways, such as peeping on the objects of their desire, making inappropriate comments, stealing underwear etc. Though typically middle-aged or elderly men with a penchant for young girls, there are probably a few dirty old women out there. |

Maids
The Maid is a highly popular theme in anime/manga. They can simply be a job, or they can be a lifestyle for loyal servants to a master or mistress. Identified by a particular uniform. Also popular in cosplay. |

Modesty Towel
A towel usually worn after bathing or showering to cover up. Sometimes used as censorship even during bathing. |

Panty Shot
Gratuitous exposure of a character's panties, possibly the biggest fan service concept in anime and manga. |

Rivals
Rivals are competitor to someone. Unlike an enemy, rivals could have similar goals but disagree on the process. |

One of the most common forms of Fanservice, and a classic anime cliche. |

Transfer Student
A new student who comes from another school, they typically come from a mysterious background or they arrive to spark some changes in the story. |

Tricky
Coined by Tom Pinchuk, tricky refers to content that sexualizes minors or characters with the appearance of minors. Generally, these characters have a physical appearance that puts them noticeably under the legal age of consent (17) in the United States. |

Unreal Hair/Eye Color
A popular design choice for characters in anime is to give them natural hair and/or eye colors that do not occur in real nature. |

Yuri
A genre of anime/manga featuring girl-on-girl relationships. Although the genre originated in female-targeted works, today it is featured in many male-targeted works as well. |
