History
Kyouya is the third son of the Ootori family, which owns an immense conglomerate organization that primarily deals in hospitals and other health-related products. At first, being the third son led him to believe he could never inherit the role of leader of the Ootori organization, and he simply followed the expectations of his father by doing as well as (but never better than) his brothers did. After he met Tamaki, he came to realize that he could compete to inherit if he wanted to, and proceeded to excel at everything. He also helped Tamaki create the Host Club in order to prove his ability at managing-- and a good thing, since Tamaki doesn't have a practical bone in his body. As such, although Kyouya is the vice-president of the club, he often manages everything behind the scenes, earning the nickname "Shadow King" from Haruhi.In addition to two older brothers, Kyouya also has an older sister named Fuyumi, who is now married and living apart from the Ootori family. She comes back to visit often, however (and sometimes rearranges Kyouya's things), and she worries about Kyouya's obsession with the family business.
Personality
Although determined and manipulative, Kyouya has a soft side for his friends, particularly Tamaki, and does his best to help them and keep them happy-- provided it doesn't get in the way of his other goals. He claims to only be in the club for the purpose of profit, although this claim is debunked by many of his more altruistic actions. As a host, his role is the "cool" and intelligent character. He always has a smile on his face, even if he doesn't like his clients. It is unclear how much of this is known by the clients and how much is known only to the other hosts. It is unclear how Kyouya feels about Haruhi, as he is not naturally demonstrative of his feelings in general.
