When Haruhi expresses displeasure with the school's club offerings, he flippantly suggests that she starts her own, only to be dismayed when she does-- and drags him into being a part of it. In spite of his protests he becomes a mainstay in the SOS Brigade, often performing the grunt work assigned to him by Haruhi. Shortly after joining the club, each of its new members-- Yuki Nagato, Mikuru Asahina, and Itsuki Koizumi --come to him and inform him that they are not human. Yuki, it turns out, is an alien robot; Mikuru is a time-traveler from the distant future; Itsuki is an "esper" (a psychic). They each explain that Haruhi has somehow become the center of the universe, metaphorically speaking, and is able to alter reality. They also each express concern that Kyon-- a normal, average human being --managed to get close to her, and at his ability to alter her mood and desires, which can in turn change the universe.
He agrees with all three that Haruhi should remain unaware of her abilities, and works with them-- or, occasionally, against them --to keep the world in as close to a "normal" state as possible. This involves him making use of all three of the other members' powers, especially Yuki's knowledge (as she is the only character not affected by the timeline, she understands everything that happens at all moments) and Mikuru's time-traveling device.
Kyon's real name has yet to be fully disclosed, although at the beginning of the year, all of the students were seated alphabetically. Kyon sat between a student named "Suzuki" and between Haruhi Suzumiya, so we know his last name begins with "suzu," but that's the extent of what's known about his real name (although a character in one of the later novels says that it's a "majestic" name that doesn't suit the character). "Kyon" is a nickname given to him by his aunt for unknown reasons and spread to his schoolmates by his little sister, much to his embarassment.

Narrator/protagonist of The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. Average high school student; member of the SOS Brigade.
History
Kyon has always lived a normal life. So normal, in fact, that he opens the first book by complaining somewhat about it. Nonetheless, once he gets involved with Haruhi's mad schemes, he does nothing but complain about them. Along with all the other members of his class, Kyon first noticed Haruhi when she did her self-introduction, declaring that she had no interest in normal humans. He later noticed odd habits of hers, such as changing the number of ponytails she has based on the day of the week. He comments on her system, leading her to cut her hair and opening up a line of communication. He begins to chat with her briefly before or between classes, usually instigating the conversations himself.
Haruhi dragging Kyon on an adventure
When Haruhi expresses displeasure with the school's club offerings, he flippantly suggests that she starts her own, only to be dismayed when she does-- and drags him into being a part of it. In spite of his protests he becomes a mainstay in the SOS Brigade, often performing the grunt work assigned to him by Haruhi. Shortly after joining the club, each of its new members-- Yuki Nagato, Mikuru Asahina, and Itsuki Koizumi --come to him and inform him that they are not human. They also each express concern that Kyon-- a normal, average human being --managed to get close to her, and at his ability to alter her mood and desires, which can in turn change the universe.

Personality
Kyon is the only level-headed member of the SOS Brigade, and his narration is littered with humor, cynicism, pop culture references, and sarcasm. Although Haruhi is the primary representative of the series, it is Kyon who is its true protagonist-- and Haruhi herself is often an unwitting antagonist. Given that the book opens with Kyon's complaints about the normalcy of life, combined with the fact that some of the things that Haruhi's powers are said to have brought about (i.e. Mikuru's membership in the SOS Brigade and therefore her closeness to Kyon, a matter of some irritation for Haruhi), there are those who speculate that Kyon is, in fact, the character who has godly powers, and has unknowingly used them to create a universe in which he can have these adventures, with Haruhi created as a scapegoat for them. However, this has never been addressed in any of the series' iterations, and as such remains a popular fan theory.Kyonko
Gender-swapped versions of anime characters are fairly common among today's otaku, both in Japan and the United States. In the case of The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, however, Kyon's female version-- "Kyonko," with the effeminate "ko" ending to designate his girliness --has become immensely popular. Usually drawn as a short brunette with a ponytail, but similar skeptical or sarcastic facial expressions to the original version; it's generally thought that because there are few female characters like Kyonko (realistically sarcastic, intelligent, and observant), this adapted character appeals to many. Although there is no official Kyonko material in existence, she has become a common sight in doujinshi.Kyon Anime
