Yuri Shibuya is an ordinary guy, baseball fan, and loyal friend. When he tries to help a pal being beaten up by a gang of bullies, he ends up having his head flushed in a public toilet. Much to his surprise, he emerges in another world-Shinmakoku, a world populated by magic-using demons and the humans they despise. Humans have no magic powers in Shinmakoku and are considered a lower species, but there have been some intermarriages, and Yuri meets one of the human/demon hybrids right away. Lord Conrad ("Call Me Conrad," he suggests, in a reference to Roger Zelazny's This Immortal) Weller treats him like a younger brother and helps him find his way around this quasi-medieval European setting. Yuri's black eyes and hair, and his school uniform, attract a lot of attention, and soon he's told that he is not just some inferior human, but the reincarnated spirit of the 27th King of the Mazoku, or to use his formal title, the Maoh. Black is the royal family color, as it was for the historical first emperor of China. Royal aide Lord Gunter von Christ takes over from Conrad in tutoring the new King. A purple-haired exquisite, the archetypal European aristocrat, he's part scholar, part soldier-and part mother hen, fussing over his young monarch and treating him like an infant. The Mazoku tribe was rather hoping for a belligerent monarch who would help them drive their enemies before them, but instead they get a nice, quiet guy who likes to sort things out by negotiation and get a fair outcome for all sides.

A satire of the otherwordly conflicts of Escaflowne and Fushigi Yugi with the irreverent attitude of Slayers, KKM flits back and forth between the worlds of demons and humans as its hapless protagonist tries to do his duty by going on quests and saving distant kingdoms. Like so many other anime heroes, including Photon, whose desert storyline KKM echoes for several episodes, he is accidentally betrothed in the first couple of episodes, although in his case to a man. Based on the eight-part series of Ma no Tsuku novels by Tomo Takabayashi. Kadokawa also published two volumes of spin-off stories set in the same universe.
