1964- . Born in Tokushima Prefecture, he joined Toei Animation after graduating in graphic design from Komatsu City College. Served as an assistant to Junichi Kato on shows such as Maple Town before achieving renown as the show runner for later seasons of Sailor Moon. Left Toei in 1996 to form Be-Papas, a small production team whose most famous creation is Utena. Spent two years in California at the American Film Institute, while continuing to work on non-anime output for Be-Papas.
