Kum-kum is a small cave boy living in the prehistoric mountains that will one day be Japan, where he, his sister Furu-furu, and tag-along companions Chil-chil, Mochi-mochi, and Aron behave the way that their distant descendants would if only modern Japanese children had access to mammoth rides, troublesome dinosaurs, and the opportunity to throw rocks at each other. Kum-kum was an unexpected success on British children's TV in the early 1980s, not for being the first English-language broadcast of work by original creator Yasuhiko, or indeed as an early example of Rintaro's direction, but because its hero didn't wear any pants.
