Kouha Ren is Kou Empire's 3rd prince in the Magi franchise.
When the Emperor Hakutoku passed away, his brother and Kouha's father succeeded the throne. Kouha developed an odd personality growing up. His mother became mentally unstable and Kouha developed a rebellious streak, never listening to his elders and learned that he enjoyed the sight of blood, causing a somewhat sadistic side to emerge out of him.
Kouha accompanied his older brother Kouen to capture a dungeon together when he was 15 years old. They were successful but rather than the expected recipient Kouen, Kouha was chosen to be the Djinn Leraje's master, making him among the very youngest to have acquired a Djinn. But this was partly due to the fact that his brother Kouen had acquired an unprecedented 3 Djinn already, second only to King Sinbad in amount of Djinn captured.
Kouha Ren is created by Shinobu Ohtaka who has no information regarding any inspiration that Ohtaka uses to create him. He first appears as a silhouette in volume 12: chapter 111 before making his debut in chapter 116. In the anime, he also appears as a silhouette in episode 12 before making a cameo in episode 23.
Kouha Ren is a young man but looks even younger than he is. He has a very androgynous appearance. He has a very slender build and light skin with no outstanding masculine features to his body or face. He has long hot-pink hair extending down to his back. His eyes are a matching color to his hair. He always wears an ornate blue hat with gold wings on it and wears white garments with exposed legs and armor-like boots. He has golden bracelets on both wrists.
Kouha has a rather two-sided personality. On one hand he is shown to be unusually compassionate for a royal prince, uplifting and tending to disfigured commoners personally and adopting them into his service. But he also enjoys brutality. In a more reserved fashion of expressing his brutality, he enjoys hitting his attendants. But his bloodthirsty side truly shows itself when Kouha is in combat and he enjoys brutalizing his opponents. He also has loyalty towards his older brother Kouen and is not aiming for the throne like much of his family.
Judar the Magi arrived at the Kou Empire from his travels. He is first met by Kouha, who affectionately grabs him to the annoyance of Judar who told him he was making him feel sultry. Kouha's older brother Koumei also came to greet Judar, expressing his disappointment that they couldn't contact Judar. Judar gives Koumei a gift as an apology and Kouha expressed child-like interest and asked to see what it was. The three of them then go inside the palace and meet with the eldest brother Ren Kouen, who was waiting with his generals anticipating Judar.
Kouen said Judar must have something interesting for him if he made him wait for so long. Judar then told Kouen of his words to Sinbad, trying to sway the King to war against the Kou Empire which shocked Kouha and Koumei. But Kouen was pleased. He laughed and said he expected as much of Judar and professed that his Empire will be the one to rule the eastern world.
While Kouha was travelling to Magnostadt in his wagon with his attendants, he happened upon Aladdin and invited him to travel with him. During the journey, their wagon is ambushed by thieves wielding magic tools. But Kouha left the wagon and swiftly defeated them, much to Aladdin's surprise. After asking his attendants what he should do to the the defeated thieves, it was agreed that they needed to be executed and Kouha mercilessly slaughtered the bandits and their horses, needlessly chopping them into pieces.
When Kouha had finished massacring the thieves, they continued on their journey and only then did Kouha inquire as to who the "brat" travelling in his wagon was. One of his attendants reminded Kouha that Aladdin had been in their company for some time now. Aladdin soon learned that Kouha's destination was actually Magnostadt, which was his destination as well. Kouha informed Aladdin that the only people who could get into Magnostadt were magicians and special exceptions like himself as a Prince of the Kou Empire. Aladdin told Kouha that he was a magician and his purpose for going to Magnostadt was to learn more about magic. 8 Days later, they arrived at the entrance of Magnostadt. Kouha dropped off Aladdin and wished him luck with his studies.
After dropping off Aladdin, Kouha continued with his own mission. He met up with Matal Mogamett, the leader and founder of Magnostadt for diplomatic negotiations. But during the meeting Kouha is informed of his father's death. Mogamett recommended that Kouha return back to Kou given that the situation was dire. Kouha agreed, but as he left, he told Mogamett that the warning he had just given him was true. That being that the Kou Empire would take Magnostadt as it's territory and that Mogamett can choose to either submit or be destroyed. As he was leaving Magnostadt, Aladdin saw him and flew down to him. Kouha said he would have liked to hang out but his father died. He stated that his brother Kouen would be the next Emperor and that nothing would be able to get in their way.
Kouha returned to the Kou Empire. After one day, Kouha and his family attend the Emperor's funeral. Upon arriving, the Empress Ren Gyokuen was already there. She said that the Emperor had died of an illness that he had for quite some time, but that it had suddenly become worse. Kouha is visibly upset when Gyokuen clutches Kouen's arm, asking for his support. Shortly after, the Emperor's will was read. Most present were shocked to hear that the third Emperor was to be Gyokuen rather than Kouen. A tension filled the room and arguments erupted, those in favor or Kouen and those in favor of Gyokuen. But Hakuryuu Ren, stepped forward and bowed. He said that Gyokuen was the only person who could take the throne and he supported her. Gyokuen's priests began chanting the same in support. Kouha and his brothers were shocked as were his cousin Hakuei and Seishun Ri.
Kouha's Djinn is Leraje, a Djinn he acquired at 15.
A large black broadsword. It can become significantly larger near instantaneously at Kouha's whim but it becomes heavy for his small body so he tends to only enlarge it for an instant at a time. It has incredible cutting power.
