Background
Hirano started out as an assistant to an unknown mangaka, and describes himself as "horrible" and "lazy" at it. Hirano eventually moved on as a solo artist, creating hentai manga, and he also joined a circle called GUY-YA with Read or Die mangaka Shuutarou Yamada, where the twosome drew hentai of various anime, including Cowboy Bebop and Galaxy Angel. GUY-YA has continued to publish doujinshi as recently as 2005.
Working as a hentai mangaka, Hirano began putting together the pieces that would eventually become Hellsing-- most notably, the priest Anderson makes an early appearance as a mafia assassin hiding from the police in a church in his ero manga Angel Dust.
Eventually, Hirano began publishing the manga Hellsing, which was an instant hit and led to two anime adaptations; one a TV series by Gonzo that told its own version of the story, which was unfinished at the time, and the still-in-release Hellsing Ultimate.
