Kinnikuman is an anime focused on wrestling. It is an anime adaptation of Yudetamago's manga.

Superhero Suguru Kinniku, the overmuscled Prince of Planet Kinniku, wrestles against numerous outlandish opponents, including the Texan Terryman, British lord Robin Mask, and legendary Chinese brawler Ramen Man. The most popular anime superhero of the 1980s, based on the manga in Sho-nen Jump magazine by Tamago Yude, Muscleman also wrestled on the big screen in seven anime features between 1984 and 1988. When his reign in the ring was over, he was replaced by Fight! Ramen Man (1988), first as a 26-minute "feature," then as a 35-episode spin-off TV series, directed by Masayuki Akehi, in which the Chinese superwrestler Mien-Nan hunts down the Poison Snake gang who killed his wrestler parents, employing comedy kung fu in the style of Ranma 1/2. Though unknown for a decade in the West, the wrestlemania appeal of Muscleman was too great to resist in the wake of the Pokémon boom, and a U.S. broadcast was announced as forthcoming in 2001. The toys, however, sneaked abroad long before, released from Mattel as M.U.S.C.L.E. (Millions of Unusual Small Creatures Lurking Everywhere). Kinnikuman's son, Kinnikuman II, appeared in his own short anime movie in 2001. A new series, Ultimate Muscle: Kinnikuman II (2002) was followed by a third commissioned specifically for the American market-i.e., with toned down violence, ironically causing it not to be broadcast in Japan.
