In many regards this is the game I am looking the most forward to. Sure, Final Fantasy XIII is sorta right around the corner, but its been soooo long I think I just can't parse that data.

However, Kingdom Hearts is a franchise that has yet to abandon me to perpetual delays. Famitsu recently put out some new scans, and the awesome folks at Kingdom Hearts Insider went through the trouble of translating and replacing the text. Thank you. Thank you very much.

Information of note:
Notice the inclusion of Zack Fair from Final Fantasy VII mythos. I can only add that it seems highly appropriate to for the prequel hero of FF VII to join the KH prequel.
Kairi! The female love interest/object of mystery appears in this game. Mickey states that she is being hunted by the "Unverse." No data as to who or what that is, but given Kairi's age, this places the story relatively close (10'ish years) to KH.

Description of D-link combinations: Similar to the combination attacks of KH2. The player can situationally emulate friends who are far away. The girl keyblade weilder, for instance, can merge with King Mickey and become a magic wielding wizard similar to Fantasia Mickey.

Description of Multiplayer! the game will support both co-op and competitive missions. The player will be a knight similar to those from the Deep Dive movie from KH2 and will actually be able to learn D-link combination moves from their friends. If used, the next time you play with that friend, they recieve a "huge" bonus of exp as a reward for helping you.

 Well, Japan gets the game next month, and here's hoping that Jesse McCarthy's twitter about a US dub is true.

Check out the scans, but for readable detail you'll have to access the files here and hit magnify. Careful, they are kind of enormous.

Some other fun facts about Birth by Sleep to look forward to:

-Storywise, the game focuses on the Keyblade Knights seen in the ending video of KH2: Terra, Aqua and Ven. As John discussed, the game's another prequel in the Kingdom Hearts series like 358/ 2 Days. The prequel focuses on the three who are sent by their master Eraqus to seek out Master Xehanort (a different one, not the assistant of Ansem the Wise) and his apprentice Vanitas in anticipation of an incoming disaster about to arrive with the appearance of the Unverse.

-According to KH creator Tetsuya Nomura, the Unverse will have some connection to the Heartless and Nobodies where they are "the opposite of human life" and "grow off of negative emotions."

-Besides the D-Link system, Birth by Sleep will use some new systems different from the two PS2 Kingdom Hearts games:
  1. Deck Commands- A new Command Menu system that lets you equip attacks, magic and items that can be used in battles and have specific cooldown times depending on the depth of the abilities.
  2. Command Board- New game where you gain Command Points (CP) that can be used to purchase new abilities by playing through a game board after finishing the adventure within each world with each space having its own tricks and triggers. Disney characters from each respective world also take part in the games where you have the opportunity to steal CP from them as well. The Command Board will also be a selectable feature in the wireless multiplayer mode of the game.
  3. -Mode Change- New battle system where a Command Bar fills up as enemies are defeated and when filled, allows your character to trigger a Mode Change where their attributes are enhanced and give them access to new abilities for a short period of time.
  4. -Shoot Lock- New type of attack where a character can lock onto multiple enemy targets and perform a powerful attack that damages all enemies that are targeted.

Try 2x5 John. It takes place 10 years prior to Kingdom Hearts. (This was revealed in an interview back in 2007 3rd question of the interview)
The Unversed are a new type of enemies present in the game.

Not a lot of new stuff it seems in their preview other than Zack Fair is in the game and details about the multiplayer, which sounds kind of similar to KH: 358/2 Days.

Really? I thought they confirmed that the old dude from the deep dive movie was Xehanort. Obviously he's one of the 6 (?) who were stranded at Ansem's before the events of KH1, but dunno, my knowledge of Mythos is wearer than its been in awhile.

I'm so stoked for this game. It looks like piles of win wrapped in awesome.

@Konanda: I heard 10 before, that just sounds half implausible. I mean, Kairi and co. are what, 12, 13 during the first game. That would make Kairi 2 or 3 during the game. She looks easily 7-8, as do the kiddy Sora/Riku.

@John_Martone: Konanda's correct. Birth by Sleep's story takes place 10 years before KH1. Sora and Kairi are 14 during KH1 and Riku is 15.

@John_Martone:
14 for Sora and Kairi, 15 for Riku in Kingdom Hearts and one year older in Kingdom Hearts 2. Also for being 4 and 5 respecively I don't think they look too out of place.

@Konanda: I guess this is basically animu. They look as old or as young as we need them to be, without reality needing to catch up.

 Kairi age 14

@John_Martone:
Yep I know it bugged me when I played through KH2 as well where when you first see Kairi and like damn she sure's grown up in just a year. Than again people can develop quite rapidly, it's not the average but it happens and makes those of us that end up being 6'4" and with a mature voice by the end of elementary school all the more awesome.

I mean I can find plenty more examples of both males and females that are in their mid teens yet look fairly adult and ones that look like kids or where certain parts of them look more adult than others. For instance in Saki, Nodoka's face strikes me as somewhere between 10 and 13 where her breasts scream to me as at least 16 minimum. Than again I realize the character design in that show was just choose you're fetish good sir or madam but still I mean there it is.

I just got done with the 2ed KH game (about 2 hours ago) and would say I could go sometime before I pick up anther KH title. Was it good? mmm... only the ending besides that a lot of it felt like filler? That just me.

Kingdom Heats 2 or the Chain of Memories (or re-chain of memories, the remake of the gba game)?

 Kingdom Heats 2. I'm sorry I forgot that   Chain of Memories was then true 2ed game. Which is why many people like me playing the KH2 may be confuse what all happen between KH1 and KH2. But it tried to wrap it all up at the end there (Did ok cutting most it louse ends). But to get the arc in there release date order you have to do some serious platform jumping? And as we can see they still are trying to make more.

@John_Martone:  Yet out of the three, Riku changed the most. Seriously.
  He grew like half his own size or something. (btw I'm also a "older Riku" fanboy, he's so seriously cool)

But back to the topic, I already thought that the style of he characters in KH were pretty cool, and then they went ahead and added cool robot-knight armor!? It can not get more awesome than that, it cannot! I'm calling it! So yeah, I'm pretty excited for this.

Highlight what you want to put in spoiler tags that's in the dialogue box in your post and than press the red exclaimation mark button and you're done.

@Lunarmoth: Yeah, KH2 did have a bunch of zonkiness associated with its plot, considering that the GBA game was pivotal to knowing anything toward the end, but all and all I loved KH2. The system was really quite fun, and the combination thing was a blast.

@RockmanBionics: Seconded on the robo/knight design thing. I forgot about Riku, but I think it was his body just growing to match his feet. I had a dog that did that. Tail grew faster, and the rest of the body had to catch up with it.
