A European wolf and a Sakhalin dog sire five puppies in the wild north of Japan. One day, the canine family is attacked by Gon, the man-eating bear, and the mother is killed. One of the puppies is found by a human girl under a waterfall. She adopts him and names him Taki (Japanese for waterfall), rearing him as a domesticated dog. However, as in Call of the Wild, doubtlessly the inspiration for the Tatsuo Edogawa novel on which this anime is based, Taki's true nature eventually comes out, and he heads for the mountains to return to his own kind.
