Bumi was 112 years old by the time Aang had returned to Omashu, but he hadn't aged a day since they last saw each other. Aang and his friends Katara and Sokka had been arrested in the city for vandalism, and Aang didn't recognize him. When deciding the fate of their crime, he ordered a feast for them. He tricked Aang to airbend as proof he's the Avatar. He refused to let them leave until Aang completed three dangerous tasks, and he had his friends captured while they slept.

The next morning he revealed Katara and Sokka, and forced Aang's cooperation by placing geminite rings on them. The rings would eventually cover their entire body if Aang didn't complete the rest of his crazy tasks. he completed the first two tasks with ease. They were claiming a suspended key from a waterfall, and finding Bumi's pet Flopsie, which was the giant beast chasing him. The third test was to point to the person to fight, and Aang picked Bumi over the two hulking brutes. It was then that Bumi revealed he is a powerful earthbender. They fought to a stalemate, but Aang still won. Bumi then refused to free his friends until Aang guessed his name. Later that day, the pattern of the bizarre proved to Aang that he was his old friend Bumi. Katara and Sokka were freed of the geminite, which was actually rock candy; and he gave them money and supplies for their journey to the Northern Water Tribe.
