When his parents are killed by the evil King Lavic, the three-year-old Arthur is spirited away from Camelot castle by the sorcerer Merlin. Becoming a squire to Sir Ector, at the age of 15 he is able to pull the sword Excalibur from a stone, thus becoming the rightful ruler of the Britons.

A lackluster series that manages to make Arthurian legend look like just another cartoon, it compares unfavorably with anime such as Escaflowne that can make cartoons look like Arthurian legend. Based on Thomas Malory's Morte D'Arthur, but only indirectly, through a manga adaptation by Garaga-creator Satomi Mikuriya, it was serialized in several children's publications, including Terebiland and Terebi magazine. The second series, Prince on a White Horse (1980, Moero Arthur Hakuba no Oji), sinks almost completely into anime cliché, dumping earlier talk of Lancelot, Morgan le Fay, and a Leiji Matsumoto-influenced Lady of the Lake. Instead, it seems to confuse legends of King Arthur with legends of King Alfred and a heavy dose of 1970s pulp fantasy, pitting the prince against an invasion of flying Norse longships crewed by the "Zaikings." Accompanied by a young boy with the suitably Old English name of Pete, Arthur must travel undercover, find some secret treasure, and defeat the evil Baron Damiane. In the final episodes, the story reintroduces the Knights of the Round Table and Princess Guinevere, but not before Arthur has met some mermaids, fought off some pirates, and had an encounter with a snow princess straight out of Japanese Folk Tales.

Some of the more recognizable episodes were released in a U.S. dub in the 1980s by Family Home Entertainment in a version that provides additional unintentional hilarity as voice actors attempt English accents with varying degrees of failure. Further dolorous strokes were dealt to British heritage in Marina the Manga Artist Goes to Camelot.
