Kaworu is the fifth children and the seventeenth Angel, Tabris.

Kaworu first appears in Episode 24 of the series when Shinji is alone by the lake. He reveals that he is the Fifth Child (Fifth Children). Kaworu was sent by SEELE to NERV to replace Asuka, who was unusable. Soon it is revealed that he is actually the seventeenth Angel, Tabris and he was sent to NERV to make contact with Adam and cause the third impact. However, he finds out that the being in NERV's Central Dogma is actually Lilith, after realizing this he asks Shinji to kill him.

He appears briefly in The End of Evangelion movie during the Human Instrumentality Project alongside Rei, trying to convince Shinji on which is the best choice for mankind, in his own words he represents the words "I love you". He is also expected to appear in the new Rebuild of Evangelion movie as the pilot of Unit 06.

Throughout the course of Episode #24 there is only one piece of music which plays, that being the "Ode to Joy". It serves as his leitmotif.
