A Twinkle in the Sky

A common trope in anime & manga. When characters or objects are launched into the sky, they vanish and a small twinkle appears where they disappeared.

Age Change

When a character changes their age, either growing older or younger, and typically not simply by having time pass but as the result of some power or outside source.

Alternate Reality

An alternate reality is a universe that is different from the main world of a series. This world can be different in just small ways and it will still resemble the main reality, or it can be completely different and not be similar at all to the universe the protagonist had known.

Originally compiled by Darrin Bright and Ryan Shellito at the California Polytechnical Institute, they explain much of the abnormal physics phenomena we see in most anime.

Arcobaleno

In Katekyo Hitman Reborn the Arcobaleno are a mysterious group of seven members from different mafia families who agreed to undergo a mysterious ritual to have their bodies turned into those of babies. The reasons for this have yet to fully be revealed yet.

Assassins

A person who was paid to preform the extermination of a specific person.

Back to life

Also known as resurrection. This is when a previously dead character is restored back to life.

Bad Ass Fight Scene

A fight scene or epic battle that stands above the norm of what the series offers and goes down in history as one of the best combat encounters in the series. The perfect combination of epicness and animation.

Bad Turned Good

Also known as redemption. This is when someone who was previously wicked decided to become good.

Baseball

Baseball is a field sport played between two teams. The sport is very popular in the United States, Japan, and elsewhere throughout the world. It has also been a popular theme in anime and manga for more than 50 years.

Basketball

A sport where teams of five attempt to sink an orange ball into a hoop. It is a western sport in origin but is popular in Anime as well.

Bitch Slap

A slap with a flat open hand against someone's cheek (most common). This is sometimes performed during an argument.

Boxing

Boxing is a sport and form of martial arts, where people use nothing but there fist to fight.

Bullies and Bullying

A bully is a person who habitually badgers and intimidates smaller or weaker people.

Cavallone Family

Cabarrone Family is a mafia family with Dino as it's boss.

Chibi

Chibi means to be small in stature. In anime/manga the term is used for a character that is small in appearance and exaggerated features.

Childishness

When a character doesn't quite act their age and behaves in an upbeat and immature manner.

Comedy

Nearly every anime has a comedic moment here or there. Everyone likes to laugh.

Cosplay

The practice of dressing like characters from anime, manga, video games, and even novels, TV shows, celebrities, etc.

Costume Change

Normally in anime and manga a character will wear the same outfit throughout the series. But there are many characters who are known for changing into elaborate costumes, costumes they'd never wear normally, either for comedic relief, to gain power, or for their own mysterious reasons.

Crazy

Characters with serious long mental unstabilities. They're sometimes simply weird but recently they're portrayed as downright homicidiacs. Not to be confused with the Mentally Unstable where the character fights against it and usually wins.

Cross-Dressing

The act of wearing clothes commonly associated with the opposite gender.

Cybody

Cybodies are a type of summoned giant that are piloted in Star Driver.

Doctors

A Doctor is a medical professional that works to the goal of curing illness in others.

Episode Recap

Basically a short summary of past events told in one episode.

Exhibitionism

The most basic definition is nudity in public, but an exhibitionist in a broader sense is someone who just simply looks for an excuse to take their clothes off or feels more comfortable without them.

Explaining Your Power to the Enemy

Explaining Your Power to the Enemy is like a anime/manga rule. When a character get a new power up it's necessary to explain it to the opponent so he can counter it easier.

Explosion

Explosions are featured in a wide array of anime/manga, created from various weapons/attacks.

Failure

In anime and manga many characters either consider themselves failures or are seen as such by others for not being strong enough, being scared, or just not being smart enough. However, usually this serves as inspiration for the character to grow stronger and come back to prove them all wrong.

Father

Fatherhood as a concept. A man who has conceived or raised a child.

First date

The first date of a (potential) couple.

Flashback

Used frequently in Anime to either recap past events or provide a back story for a character, either their origin story or their off-screen training of new attack. Sometime and entire episode/chapter would be a entire flashback.

Fox Eyes

When a character always seems to have their eyes shut. This can be used to either show wisdom or mischief.

Ghosts

A ghost is a dead persons spirit that roams the earth usually attached to where they died or refusing to go to the after life until there are finished on earth.

Heroic Sacrifice

An act when someone gives up something of great importance for a greater good.

Heterochromia

Characters with two different eye colors.

Hot-blooded

Someone who can't think calmly and always jumps into action without thinking much. They're rather unpredictable for both their allies and their enemies.

Illusion

An Illusion is a condition of being deceived by a false perception or belief.

Immortality

The ability to live beyond a regular human's lifespan.

Kendo

Kendo translates to "Way of the Sword". It is a sword competition using bamboo swords called a shinai. It is a popular martial arts practice in Japan.

Lecher

Characters who exercise their strong libidinous desires in unwholesome ways, such as peeping on the objects of their desire, making inappropriate comments, stealing underwear etc. Though typically middle-aged or elderly men with a penchant for young girls, there are probably a few dirty old women out there.

Love Confession

Telling someone you love them. It usually takes a lot of courage to say it.

Marriage

A couple who have made an official vow to stay together.

Mermaids

A mythological creature that is half-human and half-fish. Are said to be related to the sirens.

Millefiore Family

Millefiore Family is the Family with enough power to annihilate the Vongola. Their boss' name is Byakuran.

Moronic character

The kind of character always gets into trouble by his or her bad luck, silliness, and/or cluelessness. A common source of comedy.

Mosca

Mosca are robotic suits originaly developed by Vongola Family. 1st series are named Gola Mosca. 2nd series are named Strau Mosca.

Multi-Sword Technique

Characters who use fighting styles that involve more than one sword. Sometimes these fighters will use more swords than they have arms for, fitting multiple swords into the same hand, holding them in their teeth, or grabbing them with their feet.

Murder

The act of taking another person's life.
