The leader of the Pillar Men and creator of the Stone Masks.
Kars is a genius from the ancient superhuman Pillar Men tribe. The Pillar Men dominated all life on Earth, and they were regarded as gods by humans. But they had one weakness, which is sunlight, thus why they had to live underground for the rest of their lives and could only go out at night. Kars hated this weakness, and his ego lead him to invent an object which would release the full potential of a Pillar Man in hopes of overcoming sunlight, the Stone Mask. After he used the Stone Mask on himself Kars gained extreme longevity, but was not able to conquer sunlight. His body, now unaging, needed too much energy to sustain itself, and so he began to rapidly consume all life around him. Fearing that this would eventually lead to the destruction of all life-forms, his Tribe decided to execute him. Kars, in protest, killed them all, and then started his journey to find a way to remove this weakness, taking with him Esidisi and the then-infants Wamuu and Santana.
After a period of time, Kars discovered that a cure for the Pillar Men's weakness, the Red Stone of Aja is in the Roman Empire's possession, and thus they set out for Rome. Knowing this the Hamon clan tried to stop them from obtaining it, but because of a prophecy that dictates that the destruction of the stone would make defeating the Pillar Men even more difficult, all they could do was hide it, rather than breaking it. Nearly the entirety of the clan were massacred by the Pillar Men, but Kars and his group couldn't claim the stone.
The events that lead to the Pillar Men's slumber in the wall in Rome are unknown.
Kars was created by Hirohiko Araki, the author and illustrator of the series, as the main antagonist of Jojo's Bizarre Adventure's second arc, Battle Tendency. His name is a reference to the American 1970's new wave band "The Cars".
Kars is a tall, herculean man, with long dark wavy hair, purple eyes and a fair complexion. He also has three horns protruding from the frontal region of his head.
His usual attire consists of a loincloth, a scarf, a circlet, earrings, forearms guards and high boots.
Due to his massive ego Kars is obsessed with obtaining the Red Stone of Aja, thus he will do absolutely anything to achieve that goal, no matter how under-handed or dishonourable. He doesn't care about pride or honour, and believes that the end always justifies the means, and that the victor has the right to decide what is right and what is wrong.
He also has respect for nature as shown when he killed a driver who almost hit a puppy, and when he forcefully changed his drop trajectory to avoid landing on a flower.
After awakening in the year 1938 in Rome along with Wamuu and Esidisi, and getting into a short skirmish with Joseph Joestar and his comrades, Kars sets out once again to find the Red Stone of Aja.
After they got information on the Stone's location, Esidisi went out to retrieve it, only to be killed by Joseph. Getting no word back from the Pillar Man, Kars decides to take matters into his own hands.
Confronting Joseph and co. on the Swiss-Italian border, Kars also fails to retrieve the stone.
After this, Kars and Wamuu set up one final confrontation with Joseph and his companions in Saint Moritz. After Joseph defeated Wamuu, Kars fought Lisa Lisa, defeating her through illegitimate means, and taking the stone. Kars then sends his army of vampires onto Joseph, only to have them pushed back by Stroheim and his troops who just arrived along with Smokey and Speedwagon. Joseph saves the unconscious Lisa Lisa and heavily injures Kars by knocking him onto the spikes below where they were fighting.
With Stroheim's troops holding the vampires at bay he orders the soldiers to launch a UV light burst to finish off Kars. But while no one was looking Kars donned a Stone Mask combined with the Red Stone of Aja, he faces the UV light aimed at him, which triggers the stone, turning Kars into the ultimate being. Now, standing at the pinnacle of evolution, and seeing his adversaries completely terrified of him and that Sunlight and Hamon no longer affects him, Kars wishes to celebrate his "rebirth" and avenge Wamuu and Esidisi by killing Joseph.
Joseph, taking the stone with him, decides to run away as he tries to think of a plan to defeat Kars with the latter on his tail, the chase takes to the skies as Joseph rides a plane he found while running. The chase ultimately ends with Joseph, Kars and Stroheim who came to help Joseph, crashing into the crater of a volcano. Kars falls into the lava pit, but carves his way out through the surrounding rock and slashes Joseph's forearm off. Kars, who now discovered that he can also use Hamon, sends a finishing blow towards Joseph, who as if by fate, holds out his hand with the stone in it. The stone reflects the Hamon energy into the volcano, causing an eruption which launches the ground Joseph and Kars are standing on high into the atmosphere. Kars tried to escape by flying, only to be launched further beyond the atmosphere and into space by flying chunks of rock.
Trying to return to Earth, Kars releases jets of air out of his body, but due to the coldness of space this actually freezes him. Now he drifts through the cosmos as a frozen statue, and eventually "stopped thinking".
