Sixteen-year-old Yuichi is, like so many other anime latchkey kids, effectively abandoned by his parents when they head off to Africa on business. He is ordered to move to his aunt's place, where he hasn't been for seven years, and finds himself living with his attractive cousin Nayuki. Although his memories of the time are hazy, it seems that he and Nayuki were once very close. As if that were not enough of a nod to Love Hina, Yuichi soon finds himself befriending and flirting with several other girls in the town, many of whom claim to have been friends with him in the past and may be interested in being more than friends now that they are teenagers.

Anime appears to excel at depicting, revisiting, analyzing, and fantasizing the desperate teenage stage where a boy will consider dating anything that moves. As with so many others, Kanon is based on an erotic dating simulation game (released in 1999), the only distinguishing feature of which was a series of supernatural subplots and some quite tragic endings for some of the girls, in the style of Diamond Daydreams. However, the impact of the sad endings is lessened considerably in this anime version through some softening of the plots and an over-large cast of characters that make it difficult to care what happens to any of them.

The special, Kanon Kazahana, a 20-minute "bonus episode" directed by Ito and with character concepts by Itaru Higami, came out the following year and reveals a little more background about events that occurred before the final scene of the TV series.
