This is a bit of a first here. I am adding the latest in my series of Code Geass R2 4komas on my Anime Vice blog the very same day I posted on my deviant Art page. Both are based upon Episode 23.

 Code Geass R2 Episode 23
 Code Geass R2 Episode 23
This first one is titled "Comfort Deux". It's based on the scene early in the episode where Lelouch is still reeling from the idea that Nunnally is still alive and how this will effect the plan he has spent so much time working on.

I remembered that the last time Lelouch thought he was losing Nunnally he became kind of depressed and sort of hit on Kallen with this, "then...comfort me." line. I thought it would be funny if in this scene where Suzaku is confronting Lelouch about Nunnally that perhaps he is so confused that he actually forgets who he's talking to and thinks it's Kallen again. I lot of yaoi fans enjoy this one as well. The keen observer will notice C.C.'s hand slowly coming into view with the recorder in panels two and three. That is sort of a call back to some of my favorite moments in Loony Toons where something or someone would slowly come into view for comedic effect. That's why I gave C.C. that sort of sly Bugs Bunny look at the end.

As you can tell in the picture above. I really like to try and emulate the scenes I'm making into a joke. That way fans will be able to know exactly where this is taking place. You often don't see that level of detail in fan comics.

Yet another 4koma to go along with this same episode. It's this image that both debuts on both Anime Vice and deviant Art at the same time. The title is "Release". This is a little later after it's been revealed that the Black Knights had repaired Gino's KMF, the Tristan. He's talking with Kallen about how he understands how she must of felt being half Brittanian and fighting with the Japanese. Really, it's a stupid statement. He didn't understand at all what she was feeling.

I really hated Gino. He was the most pointless character that never influenced anything in the series. I don't even think through the whole series that he ever even knew that Lelouch was originally Zero. I really wish Suzaku had killed him when he killed the other Knights of the Round.

Art wise, one of my favorite touches was the blurring of the Tristan in the foreground. It helped sell the sense of depth. The color work came out pretty well too.

This nearly ends my daily posting of my Code Geass R2 4komas. Though, very soon I will have some brand new ones that no one has seen before....with the obvious exception of myself since I'm making it.

Just out of precaution. I'll put this in NSFW mode:This one starts off with one of my favorite drawings I have ever done of Lelouch. I do have to say that digitally painting all those books are a monster of a headache.

Just in case you don't understand. That is Lelouch's mom. That's why he's so disturbed. This joke basically perpetuates the running gag I've had in these 4komas that Lelouch's family is filled with seriously messed up people, with himself as the only sane one. Really, there are just some things that we should never know about our parents. Not only did Lelouch see 'that' but Marianne shows up at the end to tell him the truth about what happened to her and Nunnally. A bit of news that, in the anime, Lelouch didn't take well.

Now, a fun fact about this one. I actually drew that third panel completely uncensored. I added the censorship up later so I could present this to a wider audience. In a way, I think having the censor bars up makes it much more funny. Marianne's nickname was known as "The Flash" in her day. the deviantArt website ended up putting a mature content warning on this one anyways. Meaning someone must of complained.

Code Geass R2 - Episode 22
Code Geass R2 - Episode 22
Here we have a nice and tender moment. This was almost my last of the Code Geass R2 4komas. It was at this point I stopped making them weekly. I wanted to know how things ended before I spent any more time making these. I really like how Lelouch looks in that third panel.

I had noticed that through out the entire R2 season. It seemed like Kallen's story was about becoming closer and learning more about Lelouch. She started out angry and refused to call him by any other name then Zero, but time passed and she started to use his real name much more often. It came to the point where she only called him Zero in front of others who didn't know his identity. I started to notice that every scene the two had alone it seemed like they were becoming closer to each other, but always something or some one would interrupt that moment. Finally, in episode 22 they had a scene together without interruption.

At this time in the story Lelouch was now Emperor. He was pretending that he didn't know how anyone was. He even ignored Rivalz. It was Kallen who met with him at Ashford. He even acted like this was their first meeting. Yet, oddly enough Lelouch asked to take the long way around, claiming to be a bit nervous. As the approached Student Coucil building, Lelouch broke character when it was just the two of them. He mentioned how nostalgic it felt to be back there. Kallen opened up about what she's been feeling and tried to get Lelouch to answer her question. That question was what did she mean to him. He didn't respond, but when she walks away he whispers a very soft, "Farewell,... Kallen.".

Pretty much a day or two after this episode aired, there was an interview published in Newtype magazine with Kallen's voice actress, Ami Koshimizu; and she was asked about the kiss scene. Ami talked about how the director told her that the kiss itself was more a desperate attempt to get Lelouch to say something, but after she kissed him it suddenly dawned on her that she's been in love with him this whole time. She had just been confusing these feelings as loyalty. At that point she didn't feel she could go with him.

Something I noticed about the scene. Sure Lelouch didn't say anything to Kallen when they were alone, but he also didn't lie to her either. The fact that he pretty much asked to be with her alone and whispered that goodbye. When we consider the ultimate outcome of Lelouch's plot. I believe he wanted to see her one last time before he went to his death.

Well, I have been a busy poster on here these past few days. It's time for me to post some more of these 4komas based on the second season of Code Geass.

My internet was having a horrible connection today. Probably due to the work they were doing after that guy knocked over that telephone pole. I should probably switch to cable based high-speed internet. Seems to be working fine for me now.

Code Geass R2 - Episode 19
Code Geass R2 - Episode 19
This one is a rather goofy but fun 4koma based on the events in Episode 19. I just found it odd how easily the Black Knights accepted Schneizel's audio evidence against Lelouch. I really like how Toudou looks in that first panel. He makes me think of a proud lion. It was a lot of fun making this one. I had actually had this joke written weeks before this episode even aired. I had read episode previews and I was able to basically deduce what was going to happen. I just wasn't sure who was going to be in the room or the setting.
The punch line here is based off something Kanon had said during the China arc. He had mentioned how he took care of all of Scheizel's needs. I played off of that line, because even he seemed to be implying something. Poor Cornelia here. Seeing her older brother like that.

Code Geass R2 - Episode 20
Code Geass R2 - Episode 20
This 4koma from Episode 20 was venting some frustration. It was so irritating having Kallen stuck in the prison for so long. She finally breaks free in this amazing battle. Only for the Black Knights to betray and we pretty much don't see her in this episode. As a Kallen fan it kind of ticked me off. This takes place just after C.C.'s memories have returned. She goes back to the room to get her stuffed doll and walks in on Kallen wearing her dress.

It was a bit hard to pull off this joke. More so in that third panel. I just sort of imagined C.C. slowly appearing in the reflection of the mirror in a very Bugs Bunny style. One of my favorite touches in the art is how the story takes place in the reflection, but you see them in the foreground too.

Enjoy.

Alright, I know I'm really late with this one. We just had several power outages in my area today and I pretty much got very little of my workload done today. I heard about the power outage at Comic Vine/Anime Vice.
Whatever evil spirit struck there has made it to Kentucky and where Sora_the_Key is. I had two power outages. One was in mid day while I was trying to work. I just heard this god awful sound from a street nearby as it was happening. It sort of sounded like a tree falling. I went to investigate. Some eighteen year old took a header with his car into a telephone pole. Hit it with enough force that the pole came down taking the transformer and power lines with it. Thankfully the young man wasn't too badly injured. It's been raining so that was probably part of the cause.

Here we have three 4komas, but two are based on Episode 18.

Code Geass R2 - Episode 17
Code Geass R2 - Episode 17
This is a pretty funny one and I'm very pleased with the background work. I always love trying to take a serious moment and turning it into something silly. Though, you would not believe how often I've had to explain this joke. Sooo many times people have thought that is Suzaku in the last panel. Did these people even watch the show?? Did they just forget that Lelouch is always getting exhausted easily?

Code Geass R2 - Episode 18
Code Geass R2 - Episode 18
Here is another in the lines of the Upgrade jokes. I had noticed that when Lloyd and Cecile were being questioned about the work they were doing to the Guren, Cecile seemed embarrassed and mentioned really being in Hobby Mode. I used that to play into something naughty she was doing. I thikn the Guren SEITEN came out looking really sweet in this comic. Kallen is on the inside and Sayoko shows her hidden ninja abilities.  The UPGRADE jokes were king od a running gag in my 4komas.
See: UPGRADE 1 and UPGRADE 2

Code Geass R2 - Episode 18
Code Geass R2 - Episode 18
This 4koma is probably one that I have had to explain above any other.  I got to the point where I was really sick of explaining it. If you have seen the episode, you should be able to figure this out.
I took this opportunity to take a crack at Suzaku and why a lot of people out there don't like him. He always seems to blame Lelouch for things he has no control over. This was also my first time really drawing the Lancelot Albion and the Shinkirou KMFs.

Hope you enjoy.

I have my mother's birthday today. We are having a birthday dinner and I'm bringing the dessert I baked. It's her favorite Apple Tart. My brother wont be there. He forgot our mother's birthday......again. He's seeing her Sunday. So, without further ado. Here is the next Code Geass R2 4koma.

Code Geass R2 - Episode 16
Code Geass R2 - Episode 16

Code Geass R2 - Episode 16
Code Geass R2 - Episode 16

Both are obviously based on the same episode. I made the image twice, because I couldn't settle on which ending I liked more. It plays off the events after Suzaku almost injected Kallen with a powerful hallucinogenic drug called Refrain. Seeing how that was a drug that her mother is suffering from. She didn't take to kindly to that. Suzaku returns to apologize for trying to use that on her, and she beats the living daylights out of him. It was a very nice scene.

The joke in the first one is actually based on a scene where Anya asks Suzaku if he's a masochist. There actually was an edited clip in the beat down scene where someone made it look like a fighting game. I saw that as I was working on this comic as well. I guess I wasn't the only person to get the same idea. lol

Hope you enjoy.

Today's 4komas are based on Episodes 14 and 15. Now that I have these posted. I'm off to go do some baking for my mother's birthday dinner tomorrow. I'm making her favorite dessert, an Apple Tart.

Code Geass R2 - Episode 14
Code Geass R2 - Episode 14
Well, after Kallen was captured I actually thought that the whole time Nunnally and Suzaku were going to try and tempt Kallen to join their side. Much to my surprise, all that really happened was that Nunnally and Kallen talked together about their brothers. Kallen spent her whole time in captivity mostly just learning more about the kinder side of Lelouch that Nunnally knew.

It was Nunnally who got Kallen out her her small cell to a much more elaborate prison cell and a very fancy dress. It always seemed one size too small, because her breasts looked like they would pop out if she so much as breathed too hard.

I really like Kallen's expression in the third panel. It was something I noticed about this cell. It only had this fancy chair in the room. I thought it would be funny to show that Nunnally also had an evil side to her.

Code Geass R2 - Episode 15
Code Geass R2 - Episode 15
In this comic based on Episode 15, Lelouch was placed in the World of C by C.C. It was so she could have Charles grant her wish to die. While in the World of C, Lelouch learned of C.C.'s past. That at one time she had a Geass power as well and how it led to her current state. His guide was this dark shadow of C.C. I really like how C.C. looks in those first two panels.

I had a lot of comments from people who loved the idea of C.C. and Marianne(Lelouch's Mother) naked pillow fighting. I always asked them if they would feel the same way if it was their mom. This was sort of a joke that we just shouldn't know things about our parents past. It's better left a mystery.

As promised I'm posting more Code Geass R2 4komas. I'm going with two a day now. Here we have two comics based on two different episodes, but there is a connecting theme.

In Episode 10, just as Kallen looked like she was going to win in her fight, the power cut out on the Guren and she was captured by the Chinese Federation. It was interesting in that scene. Lelouch was on the bridge of the Black Knight's flag ship. As soon as Kallen was captured it seemed like Lelouch panicked. Rather forcefully he sworn to her that he would save her. Everyone there seems surprised. When the battle was finally over Lelouch demanded to know where Kallen was, but he was too late. The Chinese Federation had handed Kallen and the Guren over to the Britannian Empire that were assisting them. Lelouch appeared angry and swore he would rescue her with his own hands.

Here we see Kallen while she was still in the custody of the Chinese Federation.

For Episode 11. This has Lloyd and Cecil examining the Guren. Accidentally, Cecil activates the Sybian Mode. It's kind of a crass joke, but it's popular.

If you aren't quite sure what is going on in the Episode 11 comic. See this previous post HERE. The "Upgrade" jokes became rather popular in these 4koma series.

Another Art in the Works

I thought I would post another detail process of how I designed and created a picture I drew. This is actually another scene form the anime Code Geass, but it's from near the end of the second season, Code Geass R2

The Idea

The scene this was based on is the moment in Episode 19. Lelouch thought Nunnally was dead, C.C.'s lost and it was his fault. Kallen had just been rescued and Ougi had asked her to bring Zero to one of the docks, but didn't tell her why. Despite his sorrow Lelouch apologized to Kallen for not coming to her rescue sooner. That was rather surprising, because I don't recall Lelouch ever apologizing to anyone before. In the wake up Nunnally's loss made it even more surprising.

 Code Geass R2 - Episode 19
 Code Geass R2 - Episode 19
Well, it seems that just as Kallen starts to tell Lelouch something about how she lost her brother. The Black Knights spring their trap. Schneizel had told the Black Knights about Lelouch and his Geass. His army had turned on him and were ready to kill him. Kallen stood with Lelouch in front of the mass of guns. Kallen whispered to Lelouch that she was willing to stay there with him. All she wanted to know was what he thought of her. Lelouch looks around and he sees no way out of this trap, but he's not willing to let her die with him. He removes his helmet and plays the villain. He lies to Kallen that she was just a pawn. This breaks Kallen's heart and she starts to walk away from Lelouch. As soon as she was out of the line of fire Lelouch whispered to Kallen what he thought were going to be his last words, "Kallen, kimi wo ikirou."  Basically, that translates to "Kallen. you must live on.". That moment when she realizes that Lelouch had tricked her to save her life. I found that rather moving.

The moment seemed rather touching and tragic. Lelouch could of easily of just died letting her think of him as a villain, but he seemed to want her to understand in some way.

I didn't want to go with the dramatic build up. To do before of after events. I wanted to capture that second after Lelouch told Kallen that she must live on. I began with my concept sketches. Both designs were rather stale and boring. I was far too focused on the original angle that was shot of the scene of Kallen walking away.

Concept Sketches -

Kallen's body language was rather stiff and boring. Lelouch looked 'alright', but I wanted to see more emotion out of this.

 Final Concept
 Final Concept
The sketches just didn't show any drama or tension to the moment. Having them so close together didn't make sense for the scene I was emulating for the picture. I eventually went an entirely different path.

I took the design to more dramatic angles. I brought a closeup of Kallen and put Lleouch in the distance. This felt far more true to what I was aiming for. I've found that putting an image at an angle gives a feeling of movement. I was able to keep the close up of Kallen so you coud see the sorrow and confusion in her eyes. Just close enough to see him and get a small hint of his emotions.

Ink Work

 Ink Work
 Ink Work
The ink work for the final product.

I added in the costumes and the hair. Most of my original body work on Lleouch was covered by his cape, but it still looked pretty good. We can still see enough. I covered one half of Lelouch's face with hair. It felt like it was giving enough to  hide his emotions in that moment. It increased the confusion in those split seconds before Rolo appeared.

I had a challenge with the coloring on this. Matching that spot light look was a bit tricky. I needed Lelouch to look illuminated and Kallen lit from behind. The background really worked in this picture. With a few special effects on Lleouch I think you can really feel that he's in the middle of a spotlight. I tried multiple shadows, but it felt far too busy.

The attentive may notice that I left out the light in Lelouch's eyes. I felt that it gave the impression of giving up. It seemed to remove the life in his eyes. The look of  a man ready to die. I pulled back on the tears for Kallen. They felt a bit too overboard.

Final

I hope everyone enjoyed the look at the image and how it was made.
