A major villain in Tenchi Muyo and Tenchi Universe.
Kagato was created as a major antagonist for Masaki Kajishima's Tenchi Muyo anime, manga and novel franchise. He appears in both the Tenchi Muyo OVA series and Tenchi Universe, being voiced by Norio Wakamoto in Japanese and Michael Scott Ryan in English.
Kagato has different-looking physical appearances between the OVA series and Tenchi Universe. For the OVAs, he had long white hair and yellow-colored eyes while adorned with purple-colored robes, white gloves and a green cape. His Universe version had green hair and black eyes while dressed in formal robes.
For the OVA series, Kagato had a rather callous nature and lack of regard for human life in his search for finding the whereabouts of Tsunami. He will put on a gentlemanly facade in an attempt to influence others to aid him. However, this is all a ruse as he makes use of the people in question if he has a use for them and is not afraid to eliminate them if they are either no further worth to him or become a threat in his goals. He is skilled in various areas of science and is something of a "Renaissance Man" with his talent in playing the organ and fascination with collecting things that intrigue him that he wishes to keep all for himself.
The Tenchi Universe version of Kagato is a power-hungry individual obsessed in his desire with the Jurai Power and having rule over Jurai, as such where he was driven to kill off the entire Jurai Royal Family out of revenge toward Yosho.
Kagato was a creation of Washu's that the woman created as a clone of her close friend, Naja Akara, following her mysterious disappearance from a space pirate attack. While meant to serve as an assistant, the clone developed a sinister and nefarious personality as it took over a male body created by Washu and called himself Kagato. The two would work together in creating Ryoko, Ryo-ohki and the spaceship Soja as a means of researching the power of the three gems that Washu had within her possession since she was younger. After they were created, Kagato would imprison and seal Washu in the reverse world of the Sojia and brainwash Ryoko and Ryo-ohki into following his orders. Becoming curious of a power claimed to be "the greatest in the universe", Kagato would send Ryoko and Ryo-Ohki to pillage through ruins in search of it. This search would lead to the destruction of 3,326 ruins and a great amount of collateral damage and loss of lives as a result of the destruction.
Learning that the planet Jurai could be possibly linked to this power, Kagato sent Ryoko and Ryo-ohki to retrieve information. While the two were successful in infiltrating and crippling the planet's defenses, they failed in their mission as Yosho gave chase to them away from Jurai and eventually sealed them onto Earth. With their psychic link severed, Kagato left them for dead and chose to take matters into his hands with finding the power he sought, wiping out anyone that obstructed his goals.
Seven hundred years later, the revivals of Ryoko and Ryo-ohki on Earth would bring Kagato to the planet as he would come to reclaim "his property" and is delighted to see that Yosho, Sasami and Ayeka are gathered on the planet as well. While on Earth, Kagato would engage in combat with Tenchi and Yosho, before taking leave with Ryoko back to the Soja. Tenchi, Ayeka and Mihoshi would then board Ryo-ohki fused with Ryu-oh to engage the Soja in combat while in space and rescue Ryoko. Within Ryu-oh, Tenchi would attempt to use the Light Hawk Wings in Ryu-oh for an offensive attack, but Kagato would overpower it and destroy the section of Ryo-ohki fused with Ryu-oh. Thinking Tenchi for dead, an enraged Ryoko powers free from her imprisoned confines on the Soja and returns to Ryo-ohki to launch an attack within Soja to kill Kagato, even at cost of her own life.
Breaking into the ship, Ayeka and Ryoko engage Kagato in combat. However, both find themselves at a disadvantage with Kagato not only surpassing them in power, but the inside of the ship having the power to neutralize and absorb any outside power source that attacks the ship thanks to gems Kagato created in an attempt to replicate the power of Washu's gems. Fortunately, Tsunami intervenes to save Kagato from attempting an attack to destroy Earth and manages to easily cripple the Soja's defenses. In addition, Tenchi (whose life was saved by Tsunami) appears on the scene within the ship to save Ryoko from having her power drained by Kagato. However, Kagato draws upon more power from his gems, which are enough to drain any power that Tenchi can muster to use Tenchi-ken and to draw Tsunami into the Soja.
As all hope seems lost, Tenchi recalls his earlier conversation with Tsunami about having the potential to draw upon his own power and is able to call upon his own Light Hawk Wings to use in battle. Surprised at these developments, Kagato attempts to personally attack the boy yet is easily defeated by Tenchi. Unable to regenerate from the damage inflicted on him by Tenchi, Kagato acknowledges his defeat and congratulates Tenchi as he fades away from his death.
Here, Kagato was a Juraian knight who became corrupted by his thirst of power from obsessing over the Jurai Energy. His destructive acts in pursuit of acquiring more power led him to fight with Yosho, where Kagato was defeated yet not killed. Fleeing Jurai, Kagato would train in harnessing his Jurai Energy to its fullest potential, enough so where his body seized aging and his Master Key could now produce a large bastard sword-like appearance.
Years later, Kagato would return to Jurai under the guise of Yosho and take claim to the throne as the empire's ruler. Desiring to eliminate the royal bloodline of Jurai out of revenge against Yosho, Kagato would declare Sasami and Ayeka to be wanted for treason, which forced Tenchi and his family on a journey to Jurai to clear their names. Later becoming aware of Yosho being among the group, Kagato would personally confront Yosho at an old Jurai temple and easily defeat his old foe with a crippling injury.
Upon realizing Tenchi was Yosho's grandson, Kagato would abduct Ayeka as bait to lure Tenchi to Jurai and promised to personally battle him should he survive the trip to the planet. With help from the girls, Tenchi makes it to Jurai where he confronts Kagato. While at first overwhelmed by his foe's greater power and skill, Tenchi is eventually able to draw upon his true power and defeats Kagato in somewhat similar fashion as Kagato's demise from the OVA series with a final exchange of sword blows.
For the OVA series, Kagato possesses similar abilities as Washu and Ryoko in that he can teleport, regenerate from damage, possesses superhuman attributes, telekinesis, flight, matter manipulation and manipulation of energy. However, these abilities are of a stronger capacity than what Ryoko is capable of as Kagato has a quicker regenerative rate, has a greater variety of energy attacks he can produce and possesses telekinesis strong enough to shatter Ryoko's giant form when she fused with a stone pillar aboard the Soja. The greater capacity seems to come from Kagato being able to draw on more power from Soja's gems than what Ryoko is presently capable of producing with Washu's gems.
In addition to these abilities, Kagato is capable of producing illusion copies of himself and invading the minds of his foes. His very appearance on a planet appears to make it cold enough to produce snow within whatever localized area he occupies. Also due to his involvement in Ryoko's creation, Kagato has a psychic link to the space pirate in which he can take control of her through use of Washu's gems when Ryoko makes use of their power.
