Welcome to Moe Mondays!
Welcome to Moe Mondays!

Welcome everyone to a crazy idea for a blog series! Unfortunately, I'm still a new anime fan about 2 years and 5 months old. My experiences with anime is shorter than all of you guys and gals. This is one shot Moe Monday blog because I never watch a Moe show in my life until Tamako Market.

Although Angel Beats could be my first since I thought it was Moe at first, the cast is mostly male dominated. Forgive me for misunderstanding what Moe is, I think Moe is....

Big, Doe-eyed, Cute, Gingerbread molded, Female Characters!

For those who haven't known me in this community, I did new anime trailers for upcoming seasons with my pals , , and . Every time I see new anime series using these types of characters as a way to attract people, I avoided the anime because I don't think I'll enjoy it. However, I went out of my comfort zone and tried Tamako Market.

Don't worry, I won't spoiled people who haven't seen it. Think of it as a beginner guide.

Tamako Market is produced by Kyoto Animation and directed by Naoko Yamada. The character are designed by Yukiko Horiguchi, known for her K-on and Lucky Star character designs.

It's a slice of life series that revolves around Tamako Kitashirakawa who lives at a Mochi shop in a shopping district called the Bunny Mountain which is a close knit community. One day, Tamako finds a mysterious talking bird named Dera Mochimazzi at a floral shop. After Tamako sneezes at the bird, the bird mistakes her actions as a form of affection. In Dera's customs, sneezing on the opposite sex is like a love confession.

The story goes on after Dera searches for a potential bride for his prince while living with Tamako.

If you're a fan of Yukiko Horiguchi's character designs, you'll see these art style are to die for. You might see some of the girls look liked characters from K-on! Strangely, the characters you make first impressions in the first episode will be Tamako, Dera, and the little tsundere boy next door, Mochizou Ooji. That could be in my case. You'll learn more about Tamako's friends, Kanna and Midori, in episodes 2 and 5. Dera is a keystone character that hooked me into the series. I was not interested in any of the female characters. None of them stood out to me. For you guys and gals, you'll find one character that you'll like. For me, it was Dera.

Getting to back to the subject of Moe, this series fits the theme with the cute girls whose presence has not dominate Dera's spotlight. To me, the talking bird is the most interesting one in the series in my case. There is no fan service or nothing naughty in the anime. It's for all ages.

You'll learn about mochi. Who hasn't tried mochi yet? I haven't, so I would love to try it. You'll find out that there is crazy mochi addict in the series. The series makes a lot of different flavored mochi and gets you hungry. It's Moe version of Willa Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.

Like I mentioned earlier, this is the last Moe Monday blog because I don't know any other Moe shows. I'll be happy to see folks in Anime Vice to take up the mantle. I made an ugly banner for this blog. Yeah, it's pretty creepy if you know Travis Touchdown from No More Heroes.

Thank you for reading this blog! I'm sorry for butchering the concept of Moe, but I had to share my experiences with my first Moe show.

Since K-On ended up becoming a phenomenon since the first season's release, there's already more merch for it than I can even remember, but this recent one caught my eye and ended up being one of the moments when I wish I knew how to speak Japanese even though there was already an introduction to it on this very site. There's this article for the themed Portable GPS that showed up on ANN not too long ago and judging from it as well as the original source (it's only in Japanese, but sadly, my chrome browser couldn't pick up any text from it, so I had it translated in order to actually read it).

Looks like I got my wishlist extended....
Looks like I got my wishlist extended....

It looks like a cassette tape when being started up, but it then goes to a themed menu, which also includes the settings for which band member to pick. The voices of Yui, Mugi, Mio, Ritsu and Azusa can guide the user to their destination when one of them is chosen as the avatar for your car.

I would definitely use the Mugi one if I could. <3

It just got released in Japan, so it looks like the fun begins for the lucky bastards who come across this. I doubt this'll end up with an English version option, but a guy can dream, can't he?

I don't often post random YouTube clips, but I got a good chuckle out of this one, as I'm sure some of you will. Enjoy:

In other news I really want a third season of K-ON!...

The Plot

Peas in a pod?
Peas in a pod?

I've just finished watching episode 1 of You and Me. You and Me is a slice of life anime about 4 childhood friends, Shun, Kaname, Yuki and Yuta. It's spring and they are entering their second year of high school together. Shun is the happy, cute and optimistic one. Shun wants everyone to get along and have fun together. Kaname is a top student, who wants Yuki too try harder. And Yuki and Yuta are twins, who are both laid back, and enjoy making Kaname angry. The main plot of the first episode is Kaname trying to get Yuki to join some sort of athletic club so that Yuki can open his eyes to the world! But this ends up a almost back where they started. However Shun is optimistic that although "things haven't changed so far, there's room for change in the future. Like cherry blossoms, the unchanging things and changing things all whirl together."

Slice of Life and Cats

What is this "club" you speak of?
What is this "club" you speak of?

I think this is what sets You and Me apart from the recently popular slice of life series K-ON. Throughout the entire first episode of You and Me, there seemed to be a deliberate undertone of laziness, boredom or comedic hopelessness. The main humor in this episode is the fact that even since these 4 boys were children, it doesn't seems like much has changed at all. Kaname's efforts to try and get Yuki to change (by getting him to join a club) end up fruitless by the end of the episode. Nevertheless, Shun is optimistic about things, he tries to reassure Yuki that Kaname cares about him, but has his own way of showing it.

Lazy days
Lazy days

Throughout the episode there were quite a few scenes with cats. And they are shown doing what cats do best, laze around. It's pretty easy to draw a comparison between the 4 boys as lazy cats. There is one specific scene where this comparison is drawn almost directly, Kaname takes away Yuki's manga, it cuts to a scene of a cat trying to catch a "cat tail" toy, then when the cat finally catches the toy, it cuts back to Yuki who has his manga again. I have a guy friend who likes cats, particularly lolcats. He finds them cute. What I found interesting what in this episode, the cats weren't depicted as overly cute. There was even one particularly wet, fat, white cat that looked like it was ready to claw the next person that tried to pet it. In another scene, a girl is tickling a small cat and the cat looks like he doesn't have a care in the world.

Sound, Music, Visuals etc.

I like the opening and ending themes. The visuals are pretty clean and simple. This makes it easy to watch. There was some good use of wind near the start of episode, and when the boys were having lunch on the rooftop. Also, falling sakura blossoms are as pretty as ever. Like I said the overall tone of the show is fairly relaxed and has a slight feeling of irony, because of the talk about how little they have changed, and the fact that it is a slice of life.

I'm interested to see if it maintains this feel throughout the series and what it decides to do with it. At this point it doesn't look like it's going for the K-ON route, where everything is happy-go-lucky, nothing changes and characters all stay the same and do the same things. Though it could easily do that, it seems like You and Me is going to be more laid-back, slower and self-aware as it develops its characters.

By the end of the episode, as Shun is speaking optimistically of the future, you begin to wonder what the point of change is anyway and how these 4 boys will turn out. This is something that I had never bothered to consider about the girls in K-ON when I watched the K-ON series.

Screens and Wiki

If you are interested, you can check out the plot summary I wrote for the wiki here, and also the screenshots I took, for easier access I have below. (however this may not be all the screenshots I took, because this new image uploading system is so weird... just go to the episode page to make sure you're seeing all the screens I took, or here.)

I have the whole K-ON band (all 5!), Black Rock Shooter, Nagato Yuki (movie version) and Saber (super movable edition) all waiting to be opened, but I decided to do Azu-nyan first! ^_^

The box came slightly disfigured (from Kurocha) but everything inside was fine.

This figma comes with 2 extra faces, 4 pairs of extra hands, a pair of extra shoes, a guitar (Fender Mustang), nekomimi, guitar case, and some guitar straps.

Quite a nice variety of hands actually. She can play 2 different cords!

As you can see, I had a lot of fun playing around with the f/2.0 aperture and 1cm macro on my new Lumix LX5. lol... The details on the guitar here is not bad, but it would have been nice if it had strings (though that might be damaged easily).

The guitar case was quite cool too! BUT! For some weird reason, they left parts of it open. Perhaps I could squeeze the guitar inside..?

The shoes were changeable, so the first thing I did was to change Azusa into her indoor school shoes.

I quite like this pose for some reason. Was just messing around with the arms and it end up looking quite natural.

Getting ready to create another portal? (hint: FLCL reference)

I know I know, this is Yui senpai's season 2 OP pose, but I couldn't resist making Azu-nyan the lead here!

 And Azu-nyan #2!

All 3 azu-nyans in one photo!

A slightly wider shot to show you how I set it up. Might get more di:stage bases to create bigger sets.

Overall, quite satisfied with this figma. All figmas seem to have weird legs that take some getting used to in order to get the poses you want though.

My figma/nendo/revoltech collection starting to get big. Better clear more space so that I can open up more!

February 20 marked the date when  became the first anime series to sell over 500,000 Blu-ray Discs on Oricon's sales chart in Japan. This musical series is personally a favorite of mine when it comes to slice of life stories.

Anime News Network reported this from Oricon's site:

It accomplished this feat when the eighth limited first edition Blu-ray volume of the  television anime sequel sold 26,000 copies (rounded to the nearest thousand) during its first five days of sales (February 16-20). The DVD version of the same eighth volume sold3,178 copies.

The current volume also topped Oricon's overall weekly Blu-ray sales chart for the February 14-20 week; it is the second volume in a row and the ninth volume in the  to rank #1. The 's nine #1 Blu-ray Discs ties the previous record; all nine of 's Blu-ray Disc volumes reached #1.

The  television anime and its  sequel have sold a combined total of 520,000 Blu-rays Discs as of February 20.  had surpassed the current #2 series, , in sales in September.

So, if Nyan-Type's new calendar is anything to go by, 2011 is the year of anime girls in Bunny Suits. In light of this new information I thought I'd quickly throw a blog post together, showing off the aforementioned calendar and maybe a few bonus images along with it. I've got to admit, I wouldn't mind buying it myself. But uh, I won't.
Nymph is totally adorable. Has one of your favourite characters been bunnied-up?
