Once a childhood friend to Erza Scarlet from their days of slavery. However during that time he apparently came under the control of the dark mage Zeref and turned evil. He was a member of the Magic Council, but is now in jail.
Jellal's history goes back to his days of slavery when he, along with his friends, were forced to build the Tower of Heaven. When Erza got captured and tortured for her rebellious behavior, Jellal managed to rescue her but got himself caught in the process. After enduring his punishment from the guards for his act of heroism, he became possessed by Zeref's spirit. As a result, his mind became twisted and evil. He then forced Erza off the island, and kept the remaining slaves to continue the construction of the tower to revive Zeref. Several years later, he produced a clone of himself under the name "Siegrain" and infiltrated the Magic Council.
Jellal was created by Hiro Mashima and his appearance is almost the exact replica of Sieg Hart's from Mashima's previous work, Rave Master, in that they both have spikey blue hair and a tattoo on their face. According to the Hiro, Sieg Hart from Rave was his favorite character, hence he decided to incorporate him into his newest series, Fairy Tail, albeit with minor and major differences (i.e. his personality, back story, etc.). This hint is clearly advocated when Jellal's fake twin was named "Siegrain" which is similar to Sieg Hart. Jellal made his first appearance as Siegrain in Chapter 1 of the manga and Episode 2 of the manga and as Jellal in Chapter 77 of the manga and Episode 33 of the anime. He is voiced by Daisuke Namikawa in the Japanese version and Rob McCollum in the English version.
"Scarlet. It was the color of your hair."
Jellal - Episode 68 - to Erza Scarlet
Jellal, who was a kind child, becomes evil due to Ultear and Zeref's mind bending spells. According to Erza, Jellal, who is defeated by Natsu, takes her place to send the Etherion implosion into the skies. However, Jellal changes to his kinder self in the Nirvana arc. After Wendy revives Jellal, his mind is a blank and he awakens Nirvana by pure instincts. When Erza finds him, Jellal admits that he cannot remember anything. After Erza tells Jellal that he has committed atrocities by killing Simon, Jellal places a self destruction spell on himself. In the end, Jellal forgives himself, and he helps Erza and Natsu in their mission to stop Brain and Nirvana.
Erza is arrested for Team Natsu's battle against the dark guild, Eisenwald, and is put to trial. But before she faces the council, she is met with a projection of Siegrain who tells her not to mention "that" (this hasn't been revealed yet). Once he joins the council to prosecute her, the proceedings are interrupted by Natsu to which he merely smiles in amusement.
Jellal uses Ultear under the disguised appearance and name of "Zalty" to help Lyon revive Deliora so he could control it. But the ice, created by Ur, in which the demon was trapped only drained its magical power, which inevitably led to its death. Despite a failed mission, he compliment's Ultear on her mother's talent and powerful magic.
When the Magic Council addresses the issue of the Tower of Heaven, which is believed to have been built by Siegrain's twin brother, Jellal, Siegrain claims that its too dangerous and proposes that they destroy it using Etherion. Although they are hesitant to do so, Ultear aids in convincing most of the members to support the motion, with the exception of one member.
In the tower, where the real Jellal is present, Natsu, Lucy, Gray and Juvia, battle with the guards to find and rescue Happy and Erza. Jellal, in the meantime, plays with a chessboard and moves its pieces that represent all the people in his "game". To proceed with the ceremony, Jellal announces the start of the Paradise Game (using magic that sends audio). The rules were to defeat the Trinity Raven (an elite assassin group from the Assassin's Guild) to reach him before he sacrifices Erza to resurrect Zeref and to do so before the tower was destroyed by Etherion.
As everyone battle their enemies, piece after piece on Jellal's chessboard are knocked down. Meanwhile, in the council, Siegrain explains that the motive behind Jellal's plan is to use the tower to resurrect Zeref. Shocked, the last needed vote by Yajima is given by the named man to launch Etherion, even though he still opposes it. At the tower, Erza manages to reach Jellal who states that the game is over. She at first thinks that Etherion hitting the tower is a bluff, but Jellal claims that its true and that she would not be able to save her friends. The two then engage in a fight which ends with Erza pinning Jellal to the ground. He then tries to make Erza give up by telling her that he is only a doll used by Zeref to do his bidding and that nothing can save him. He asks her to strike him, but she refuses and hugs him as Etherion is fired and strikes the tower, causing the outer surface to disintegrate.
Suprised that she is still alive, Jellal explains that the Etherion provided the necessary magical energy to activate the tower, which has turned into Lacrima. The council, which is shocked, asks Siegrain to provide an explanation while Yajima yells at him as he teleports to his original body. As Jellal reveals that him and Siegrain are one and the same, the two merge together and Jellal's full power returns. He then uses a serpent binding spell on Erza, which was put on her while she hugged him, and forces her into the crystal to be sacrificed. But Natsu comes and pulls her out. After Erza tells him to leave, he knocks her out and prepares to fight Jellal.
As Natsu rushes towards him, he uses a combination of flame attacks but Jellal counters with his meteor attacks. Unfazed, Natsu continues his assault when Jellal asks whether Dragon Slayers have always been this weak, but is unable to do so when Jellal uses his meteor magic to fly and attack him from behind. Jellal then uses his Seven Star Sword on Natsu, who is sent flying. He gently throws a piece of the tower's Lacrima at Jellal and starts to destroy the tower itself to prevent him from resurrecting Zeref which provokes Jellal to launch one of his most powerful attacks. But Erza, who regains consciousness, stands between the two and states that he would not kill the sacrifice but Jellal says that it doesn't matter anymore since the tower is too damaged anyways. He then sends his attack, but Simon takes the hit, saving both Natsu and Erza with his life.
Natsu then eats a piece of the Etherion and gains enormous fire power which enables him to pound Jellal. Unable to admit defeat, Jellal attempts to use Abyss Break but flinches from the wound inflicted by Erza in their previous fight. Taking advantage of this, Natsu charges at his chest and smashes him to the ground. The tower then becomes unstable from the magic it contained and was on the verge of exploding. Although Erza believed that she fused with it to prevent that from happening, it was revealed that Jellal, who was now free from Zeref's control, was the one who saved Erza and Natsu by fusing his body with Etherion. In the end, Ultear reveals that she was the one who manipulated Jellal, and that Zeref was in fact alive.
Jellal is shown in a coffin brought to Brain and Wendy by Racer. But following the events of his fight against Natsu, he became completely unconscious and thus is presented in a death like state. Wendy, who mistakens him for Mystogan, submits to Brain's request of reviving him in order to lead the Oracion Seis to Nirvana. Natsu, who arrives to save Wendy, immediately attacks Jellal upon seeing him, but is stopped by his magic spell. Jellal then knocks Brain to the lower level of the base and leaves muttering Erza's name. Cobra, by command of Brain, follows him until Jellal stops near a large tree.
Jellal then activates Nirvana, but is confronted by Erza. It was then revealed that he had lost his memories and that the only word he remembered was "Erza." She tells him that she is Erza and narrates his past in response to his plea. After learning what he had done to his comrades, he breaks down in tears. Cobra comes in to take Nirvana but Jellal states that he placed a self-destruct magic on it to destroy it as well as on himself to free Erza of the pain he had caused her and her friends. But Erza refuses to accept it and tells him that she will not let him go without remembering everything he has done. He cancels the self-destruct spell on himself after Erza convinces him that its his duty to live and struggle.
After Brain shows up and effortlessly deactivates the spell that Jellal cast on Nirvana, Midnight confronts both Erza and Jellal. Jellal shields her and tells her to step back but is easily defeated. Erza then steps up to the plate and Jellal watches helplessly as she struggles in her fight. Still ridden with guilt over what he had done in his past, Erza tells him that she believes in the light shining within him. Midnight then casts an illusion where both get stabbed (Jellal gets eaten in the anime) but Erza breaks through it without difficulty.
After Midnight's defeat, everyone formulates a plan to stop Nirvana by destroying its Lacrima legs. Upon hearing Natsu's name, Jellal seems to have regained his memories but does not show it to the others. He secretly asks Wendy to destroy one of the legs in his place and thereafter runs to Natsu's location. He interrupts the fight between Zero and Natsu by blasting Natsu with his magic but in truth, he was trying to give Natsu his Flame of Rebuke. He states that he got some of his memories back, one which was that Natsu needed flames to replenish his energy.
At first Natsu refuses to accept it, but ends up accepting Jellal's help. Once their plan to destroy Nirvana succeeded, everyone is united. But their reunion is cut short when the Magic Council appears to arrest Jellal, who agrees to go without resistance. Soon after, Natsu and the others fight the guards to keep him from being taken away. Struck with heartache over the possibility of losing him, Erza eventually decides to stop everyone and lets him leave. Before he left, he remembered her last name, Scarlett, and gave his final farewell.
This magic, which is Jellal's preferred magic style, is based on astronomical objects such as stars, black holes and meteors and Jellal uses their energy to attack his opponents. For example, he can create starchains, starbeams and so forth.
|Heavenly Body Techniques||Description|
|Meteor||Jellal is surrounded by energy which allows him to move through the air with incredible speed.|
|Altairis||Jellal gathers all the shadows around him to create a large black hole with small white lights which he then hurls at his opponent. The orb itself is quite dense and has enough trapped gravity to crush his enemies. This technique was used on Simon with fatal results.|
|Grand Chariot||Jellal summons seven pillars of light and then strikes the opponent with all of them at once. The name of this technique derives from the Big Dipper.|
Darkness Magic - Most of Jellal's dark magic techniques are unnamed but what has been shown is that he can use this type of magic in the form of ghosts or dark blasts to attack or entangle his enemies.
Thought Projection - This magic ability allows Jellal to create a mental copy of himself which can travel great distances and interact with physical objects. He used this form, under the name Siegrain, to trick the Magic Council and Erza to believe that he was Jellal's twin brother. The only condition in using it that it requires half of the user's magic.
Bind Snake - This spell appears in the form of a snake tattoo that wraps around the targets body and binds them, restricting their movement. Jellal used this spell on Erza to sacrifice her for Zeref's resurrection.
Self-Destruction Spell - An extremely complex spell taught by Brain, Jellal tried to use it to destroy Nirvana and commit suicide. Without the cancellation code, it cannot be deactivated. However, it seems that its creator, Brain was able to figure out the cancellation code and stop Jella's spell from taking effect.
Abyss Break - A fearsome and powerful magical spell that requires the elements fire, water, earth and wind which then fuse and release a dark destructive blast. It can be cast by one user or four user who each wield an elemental magic such as Element 4.
Flame of Rebuke - A spell that creates a golden flame in the palm of his hand. He gives it to Natsu to help him replenish his energy. When it was eaten, Natsu entered Dragon Force mode and stated that it was like "eating Etherion".
He and Erza Scarlet appear on the Holy Shine's cover. Who created Holy Shine song is DaisyXDaisy.
