Times are Still Tough for Animation Studios

When even CNN picks up on the troubles of Japan's anime industry, you know we've hit a rough patch. Their report is on the continued decline in revenues for the animation industry in Japan since its peak in 2006, and features quotes from the Association of Japanese Animators' executive director, Yasuo Yamaguchi, who says that “the spread of free Internet downloading is having a deadly effect.”

From the big wigs we move down to the tweeners, represented by Nobuki Mitani, who says he makes about $800 a month total, working 10-12 hour days-- often including weekends.

Of course, part of the problem isn't just the decline in revenues, but that the supply of would-be animators being perhaps larger than the demand. According to Yosuke Shimizu, director of the Tokyo Animation Industry, classrooms are full, but most students will quit their first job within months. He takes a hard line, though:

"Within half a year, some will take freelance jobs, some will take a key drawing job, and some will become sketch directors. Those who are good enough never complain about how hard the job is," he said.

Ouch. Would you rather work your ass off and live on $800 a month and have at best the mere possibility of being able to do what you love later on, or would you rather relegate your dream to a hobby-for-now status while working something boring but stable?

UPDATE: Speaking of, ANN has word that revenues HAVE dropped again in Japan. Ouch.

I dont know how people do that job. I visited Studio Pierrot in January and that job seems so rough, especially since they dont really get breaks. No wonder the quality of their animation has gone down
