Mamora Gouda's Japan Media Arts Festival award-winning manga Mori no Asagao (Forest's Morning Glory) is being adapted into a movie. The title may sound somewhat cheerful, but the story actually follows an odd friendship built between a young prison guard and a prisoner condemned to death.

The film is going to be directed by Jirou Shouno, whose works you may not be familiar with, although he's well-known in Japan. (The most obvious reference for you guys might be Lucky Star's Kuroi-sensei, who opens up a batch of the series' episodes by calling out “San-nen B-gumi?,” a reference to the 1979 Shouno-directed TV series San-nen B-gumi Kinpachi-sensei.)

So, comparisons to Green Mile, anyone? I expect it's considerably more about philosophies behind capital punishment than the Tom Hanks flick, though.
