So, we mentioned AKB48 yesterday because they were announced as NYAF musical guests-- all 48 of 'em! --for New York Anime Fest, and today they've popped up again. Tokyograph reports that the Jpop supergroup's latest single, "Iiwake Maybe," sold more than 57,000 copies in the first day of is release-- outselling one of Japan's best-selling groups of all time, SMAP, who also released their latest single "Sotto Kyutto / Superstar" on the same day. The SMAP single sold only 31,000. This was AKB48's first release to ever reach #1 on the daily or weekly charts, much less to debut there. (SMAP's had 21.)

I wonder if this means that AKB48 is becoming way more popular, or that SMAP is becoming less? And if the latter, I wonder if it's related to all the Tsuyoshi Kusanagi hubbub? Hmmm...
