Itsuki Koizumi

Origin

Itsuki Koizumi was a normal human until three years prior to the events of The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, when he suddenly awoke to his own psychic abilities. He is actually an esper, and at the same time he learned of his powers he also became aware of all other espers in the world, who also became espers at the same time. All of the espers also became aware of Haruhi and her role in their abilities, and most (if not all) of them united to form an organization called the Agency, which is devoted to maintaining the world as they know it in the face of Haruhi's more destructive tendencies. When Haruhi, in a state of displeasure, subconsciously creates "closed spaces" and magical blue giants that destroy the buildings within them, it is the Agency's members who fight and destroy the giants, known as shinjin.

Koizumi enrolled at North High School shortly after the school year started, most likely intentionally to offer Haruhi a shot at a "mysterious transfer student." He became a member of the SOS Brigade almost immediately.

Personality

A cheery fellow, often to the point of being smarmy in Kyon's opinion, Koizumi is generally the least popular of the SOS Brigade's members (keeping in mind that the other four members are cute girls and the protagonist, of course). Koizumi acts as something of a yes man to Haruhi, often acquiescing to or enabling, and sometimes even instigating her adventures. It is the Agency's philosophy that Haruhi must be placated and entertained in order to prevent her from becoming displeased with the world and subconsciously changing it. Although the principals are sound, Kyon feels that it would be better in the long run for Haruhi to change to become more accepting of the world than for Koizumi and the Agency to pander to her whims, though of the three supernatural members of the SOS Brigade, Koizumi is the one Kyon has the least influence on.
