Vivi has made the choice for her life. Between being a princess or a pirate, and shares her story with the people of her little adventure.

Summary

Opening Theme-

"Toward the Light (hikari e)" by The Babystars

Vivi is in bed next to a sleeping Karoo. Quietly she asks what he would do.

Igaram wakes from a nightmare of Vivi declaring she wishes to become Queen of the Pirates. Upon waking he bursts into Vivi's room, where she is getting changed for her speech today.

The King Cobra is outside the room. Seems he was also attacked by Igaram's wife for bursting in.

Outside the palace, the people have gathered to listen to Vivi's speech. In the palace, Chaka reports of the news that there is a battle at the harbor.

Off the shores of Alabasta, the Marines are firing long iron spears. Luffy is angry because he can't deflect them. They are piercing the hull of the Going Merry and weighing them down. There are eight ships to their one.

The former pirate Jango is now a Marine with Fullbody. Before Jango and use his hypnotic ring. Usopp pulls off an incredible chance shot with the cannon that disables both Marine ships. Even he's surprised.

Bon Clay is sure of a victory until his men report that Black Cage Hina has appeared.

Bon Clay wants to escape now. If they don't change coarse they will be captured, but the crew wont leave yet. he doesn't understand until Luffy explains they are keeping the promise with a friend.

Bon Clay is moved by these words.

Back in Alabasta, people are waiting for Vivi. Cobra enters Vivi's room to talk with his daughter. After walking in. He for a moment mistook her for Vivi's long passed mother. She asks her father to have a seat. She has something to tell him.

Back at the pirates ships. Bon Clay talks with his men about how they could never abandon allies that would risk their lives for a friend.

Moments later. Bon Clay's ship is pulling away from the Going Merry at high speed. Hina believes that the duck ship is a decoy, but a soldier reports that Straw hat Luffy is aboard the duck ship with all his crew. The order is given to follow the duck. They give chase and leave the Going Merry behind.

Hina's ships quickly surround the duck ship, but once they get close enough. Hina discovers that the Straw Hat crew was just Bon Clay's crew in disguise. The real Straw Hat Pirates were hiding on the Going Merry and took this chance to escape.

Bon Clay gives a speech about the importance of friendship and he attacks Hina's ship and crew. Vivi is remembering of the time she made the decision to go after the leader of Baroque Works.

Luffy and the crew race to make the meeting, and Vivi approaches the balcony for the speech. She begins her speech to the people. The speech way delayed by two hours.

Vivi talks to her people about her journey. As she speaks. The Straw Hats are fighting off Marine attacks. They can hear Vivi''s speech from off the shore. They believe Vivi has made her choice to stay in Alabasta. It's past noon, but Luffy wants to wait. The Marines are still after them.

Suddenly, there is an uproar in the town square of Alubarna. The people has discovered that the person standing in place of Vivi is Igaram in a bad disguise.

Just off shore of from the Going Merry. Vivi is at the meeting spot. She's been giving her speech through a special Den Den Mushi. She calls out to the crew.

The crew prepare to go pick her up when she starts speaking to them through the Den Den Mushi speakers. She's here to say goodbye. The people of Alabasta can hear her words, but don't know who she's talking to.

A Marine has spotted Vivi at the shoreline, but he's not believed before of the speech.

Vivi tells the crew she would love to go with them, but her love for her country is greater.

A flashback plays of when the crew decided on what their secret mark should be. Luffy decided it should be an X.

Vivi begins to cry. She says she will remain, but pleads to know if they ever meet again. If they will still be her friends.

These words are heard by the Marine ships.

Before Luffy can answer her, Nami shuts him up. The Marines can't witness Vivi being friendly with pirates. It will only cause her trouble and she's be a criminal. The whole crew stand at the bow, but turn their backs to Vivi.

Vivi is breaking down into tears as they wont answer her, but when she looks closer. All the crew are holding up their left arms. A small X is painted on each arm. They are holding them straight in the air. It's the symbol of their friendship.

Vivi and Karoo hold their arms up as well, and they have the mark as well on their arms.

Even as the Marines fire on the Going Merry. The crew stand there showing their sign.

The crew set sail.

Points of Interest

  • Vivi's coming of age ceremony was suppose to of occurred when she was 14, which is said to of been two years ago. This dates Vivi as being 16 years old.
  • This episode has the first image ever seen of Vivi's mother.
  • Bon Clay wont be seen again until some time after Episode 420.
  • One of the most iconic scenes of the series is at the end of this episode where the crew shows their marks to Vivi from the back of the Going Merry.
