Isshin Kurosaki is the father of Bleach's main hero Ichigo Kurosaki. There is more to this weird doctor than he reveals to everyone else.
Birthdate: 10 December
Hair: Black (with hint of grey)
Height: 6'1" (186cm)
Isshin Kurosaki is a man of many faces in the series Bleach. From the beginning of the story we are led to believe that he is merely a very strange man. The truth about Isshin Kurosaki is hidden beneath his normally wild behavior. Beneath his usually banter and awkward social behavior is a very serious and very powerful man.
As a civilian Isshin owns a small clinic he and his family run. Aside from Ichigo Isshin has two other children, his daughters Karin and Yuzu Kurosaki. Through out the earlier parts of the series Isshin is more of a comedy relief charcter than the key character he would later become.
Isshin looks to be in his mid to late thirties, but usually dresses like a twenty year old flamingo dancer. Isshin tends to style his hair so that the hair at the top of his sticks up and his side burns look rather neatly trimmed. Despite his attention to his hair Isshin looks like he tends to neglect shaving and has a scruff across his chin. Except for when he goes to visit his wife's grave and changes to his Soul Reaper form Isshin usually wears frilly shirts with or without a doctor's shirt.
In his Soul Reaper's uniform Isshin wears the black uniform with a shoulder pad on his left arm and his old captain's jacket hanging from under it. His abilities prove to be incredibly high, as he effortlessly cuts down and dispatches Grand Fisher, a very powerful Hollow, who is subsequently responsible for the death of his wife, Masaki Kurosaki. He is seen talking to Kisuke Urahara following this event, and it comes up in conversation that he somehow lost his soul reaper powers 20 years before and they have recently resurfaced again. He is then seen talking to Ryuken Ishida, Uryu Ishida's father, and their conversation implies that not only do they know each other implicitly, but there is tension between them in their past.

In the opening of the series Isshin is seen acting like a child when he attacks Ichigo for being late to dinner. The suprise attack results in Isshin getting beat up by his own sonIchigo. When Isshin and Ichigo begin to argue Yuzu steps in and threatens to not feed either of them if they keep fighting. Isshin then complains about how Ichigo can see spirits but he can't.
After Ichigo leaves the room Isshin also complains that Ichigo never talks to him about his problems with having to deal with spirits. Karin responds by telling Isshin that she understands Ichigo since their father always acts like a child. The rebuff causes Isshin to respond by crying to a mural of his wife he keeps in the house. When Ichigo finds out that his family is attacked by Hollows Isshin is the first to be taken out.
The next day Isshin is there to wake Ichigo up for school dropping on him feet first. After Ichigo is awake Isshin is the first one to get outside and get ready to fix a hole in their wall, cheerfully quipping about how nice it is that no one had died.
On day Ichigo wakes up late for work and wonders where his father is. When Ichigo looks at his watch he realizes that his father Isshin is getting ready for the next day.
Isshin calls a family meeting and discusses the days plans for the morning, where he points out that he had his hair cut despise the unnoticable difference.
When the morning comes Isshin tries to motivate his daughters to continue to climb the sttep hill leading to the cementary that their going to visit. To give his daughters motivation Isshin balances himself on his hands and begins to climb the hill on his hands, picking up speed when Yuzu and Karin ignore him.
Once in the cemetary Isshin and the rest of the family gather at their mother's grave to pay their respects. Isshin is the first to suggest a competion between him and Ichigo in Tombstone Dominos, he stops when Yuzu again threatens not to feed him.
When Ichigo steps in to later stop the Hollow Grand Fisher from eating his sisters Isshin is waiting at the bottom of the hill for his family to arrive. Secrets about this story are revealed later.
While Ichigo is fighting Grand Fisher Isshin keeps Yuzu and Karin in a small temple and notices that there is something different about Ichigo. After Ichigo and Grand Fisher are done fighting Isshin runs into Ichigo at Masaki Kurosaki's grave. Ichigo realizes that Isshin is smoking a cigarette, something he doesn't ever remember seeing his father do. Isshin reveals that he smokes one cigarette each year infront of Masaki's grave.
Before walking away Isshin tells Ichigo that he is proud that his wife sacrifced herself to save their child Ichigo. Ichigo is left standing in the rain at the end of the story almost awestruck as Isshin walks away wishing Ichigo to live a long and fulfilling life.
Isshin is a huge fan of the Don Kanoji's show--Spiritual Hotsprings. He demonstrates his support via watching the show religiously and performing the laughing arm cross gesture, which Don Kanoji does throughout the show.
When the family goes to watch the show, Isshin tries to get on TV like Ichigo, who jumps over the security line. However, he was stopped short by Yuzu. After the appearance of a Hollow spirit, Isshin protects his daughters from the fragmented glass, even though they are distant enough from the window to be safe. Isshin is seen later complimenting Kanoji on his way of dressing himself.
Isshin is only seen once during this story when he and Karin are looking for Chad after his hard-fought battle with a Hollow. After Isshin arrives on the scene and can't find Chad, he thinks that Karin just wants some attention and begins to pester her. Karin shows her dissatisfaction with Issin's actions by attacking him.
Before the four friends and Yuroichi take off to invade the Soul Society, they spend a little time at home at the beginning of their Summer Break. The friends decide to go see the annual fireworks. Sure enough, the rest of the Kurosaki family is there to cause a scene. When the team meets up at the river bank, Isshin shows up and leads them to where he has reserved some seats a lot closer to where the show will be. Isshin also tries to play down the fact that he knowingly drank alchol filled mellons that an old man is always selling.
The last thing Isshin does before his son leaves is to give him a luck/ fertility charm that his mother had. Isshin also tells Ichigo to come back alive. While Ichigo is off trying to save Rukia in the Soul Society, Isshin isn't seen too much.
After the teens have returned home and try to get their lives back in order, everything seems to get worse. While Ichigo is off fighting a Hollow and meeting the new kid, Shinji Hirako, who is also a Vizard, Kon decides to run off in Ichigo's body.
Unbeknownst to Kon, Grand Fisher is back and has come to destroy Ichigo. After escaping temporarily, Kon is eventually caught and saved by Isshin. It is then revealed that Isshin had filled the charm he returned to Ichigo with barriers to protect Kon, should he ever come under attack by any Hollow in Ichigo's body. Isshin explains that he has known, since the time that they visited the cemetery, that Kon sometimes stays in Ichigo's body. He then introduces himself to the Hollow and elects to fight him in Ichigo's place.
Grand Fisher laughs at Isshin's desire to fight him despite the vast difference in the sizes of their weapons (Fisher's is as big as a skyscraper at this point, while Isshin's is about the size of a regular katana.). Isshin's abilities prove to be incredibly high, as he effortlessly cuts down and dispatches Grand Fisher in a single blow without breaking a sweat. He is seen talking to Kisuke Urahara following this event, and it comes up in conversation that he somehow lost his soul reaper powers 20 years before and they have recently resurfaced again. He is later seen talking to Ryuken Ishida as well, Uryu Ishida's father. Their conversation implies that not only do they know each other implicitly, but there is history of high tension between them in their past.
As Ichigo is provoked by Aizen, about to fall for his psychological game, Isshin steps in and saves his son, once again donning his Soul Reaper garb. He is joined by Urahara and Yoruichi, and all three fight Aizen while Ichigo begins to battle Gin Ichimaru. Isshin's powers initially seem to gain the upper hand over Aizen; he is shown flicking Aizen in the forehead and sending him flying through multiple buildings. Urahara notes that Aizen is not fighting as well as he usually does, to which Aizen reveals his time a a soul reaper is nearly up, and he will soon become an Arrancar. He begins to metamorphosize donning a Hollow mask, increasing his abilities. He begins to take the upper hand, and Yoruichi and Urahara attempt to hold him off while Isshin takes his son to the Portal to Soul Society. They train inside the portal, devoid of time. Isshin tells his son about the Final Getsuga Tenshou, a powerful technique he believes is the only way to stop Aizen. After struggling through and finally mastering the technique, Ichigo defeats Aizen.
Ichigo's father continues to pose as a human in the First Substitute Soul Reaper arc, not taking a major role. After these events unfold, in which Ichigo regains his Soul Reaper powers, which were drained after using the Final Getsuga Tenshou on Aizen.
Things in Soul Society take a tragic turn when 7 masked individuals barge into Captain General Yamamoto's quarters, after killing his lieutenant and friend, Chojiro Sasakibe, and promptly declare war on the Soul Society. Angered greatly by this, Yamamoto prepares to fight on the front lines personally. These mysterious visitors are revealed a to be some of the Stern Ritter, a group of Quincies with who are subject to their king, Ywatch. At this time, Isshin finally reveals everything to Ichigo.
Isshin Kurosaki is in reality Isshin Shiba, and he is the uncle of Kukaku, Ganju, and Kaien Shiba, making them Ichigo's first cousins. He is shown to be a former captain of 10th Division, with Rangiku as his Lieutenant and Toshiro Hitsugaya as third seat. As a captain, his personality is almost as lax yet reckless as he is on Earth. After a mysterious Hollow kills some Soul Reapers, Isshin follows it alone recklessly, into the world of the living. He encounters the hollow again, only to see it about to attack a teenage girl. He saves the girl, but gets seriously wounded by the Hollow. The girl kills the hollow, and is revealed to be a Quincy. She is Masaki Kurosaki, Ichigo, Yuzu, and Karin's mother to-be, and Isshin's future wife. She is living with her great aunt and her son, Ryuken Ishida (Uryu's father). As Quincies hate Soul Reapers, she is caught between the man who saved her life and her surrogate family.
Later, it is shown she is nearly killed by another Hollow, on the brink of death. It is revealed Isshin gave her all of his Reishi, to allow her to live, which resulted in the loss of his powers. Later on they get married, and Ichigo, Yuzu, and Karin are born. Her death is revealed to be more than it seems. She would have easily beaten Grand Fisher, but she got in his way in order to save Ichigo's life, which resulted in her death.
Despite his goofy and reckless nature in front of his family, he is a surgeon in the real world and is quite knowledgeable in regards to current events in the Soul Society. This knowledge gives evidence to show that he is quite an intellect, partially due to his friendship with Kisuke Urahara.
Albeit brief, we witness some of Isshin's swordmanship as he is able to defeat Grand Fisher and his extraordinarily large sword with a normal sized Zanpakutō unreleased.
It is hinted that Isshin has some knowledge about Kido after he admits he placed a protection spell onto an item he gave to Kon whilst he was inside Ichigo's body. This helped protect him against attacks from foes as powerful as an Arrancar.
Isshin is shown to have great physical strength as well, shown in his brief clash with Aizen.
Isshin's Zanpakutō has a shikai, Engetsu, which is a red-hilted katana, and is able to release Getsuga-Tensho similar to that of Zangetsu. Other than this, most of his Shikai's abilities are not known presently, though it's incantation, "Burn, Engetsu", may relate to a fire based attack. His Bankai is currently unknown.
