Is this a zombie? Probably not… unless we're using the broadest definitions, maybe.

I feel like the main character would fit more accurately under some other classification of the undead in the Necronomicon, but I’m sure whatever it is just wouldn’t carry the same sort of sexy brand recognition as “zombie.” In this respect, IS THIS A ZOMBIE? might be the first anime I’ve ever encountered with a name chosen for the same “search engine optimization” concerns that generally decide - - *AHEM* - - the titles of web content. It’s as if the viewer’s being baited to watch just so they can say, “No! Nuh! That definitely isn’t a zombie!

Actually, the whole plot seems like it’s been shaped by SEO, with subjects gathered from the latest top anime-related Google searches. There’s your aforementioned zombie, there’s your LOLLIPOP CHAINSAW-like magical girl, there’s your intentional T&A and then your cheeky fan service parody to ameliorate the titillation so it’s not sexist… and so on. In less business-y terms, this almost felt like watching a cute sketch put on by the yearbook staff of some anime high school for their annual talent show. They’re having a little fun reviewing the last year or so of anime - - and they probably do it every year under a different title.

Furthering the high school analogy... the material here isn’t especially inventive, but there’s such an earnest enthusiasm on display that you’re eager to just give everything an approving pass. I watched this dubbed, and there was an infectious sense of fun to the voice actors’ take on the show. If I watched this subbed, would I just be rolling my eyes over this being a hodgepodge rehash of so many things I’ve seen lately? Maybe so - - but I watched it sub, and I like it well enough, so I give a mild recommendation.

Watch this episode, "Yes, I'm a Magical Garment Girl" here and decide for yourself.

This came before Lollipop Chainsaw, so I think the creators here need a kickback from James Gunn, eh?

Yes, I'm a Magical Garment Girl

Wait... Isn't supposed I'm a Masou Shoujo girl? I haven't watch the dub, but I remember the trailer say that name. That's just terrible.

To all new fans, watch the sub version! It's all available on the Funimation Youtube channel. I'll try the dub version for kicks.

@takashichea: The original word they use is supposed to be a pun. Since in English that doesn't translate, then they felt like naming it so people get that she's not the same as a magical girl.

@YotaruVegeta: /nod id almost be offended that this could be considered a rip off of chainsaw lollypop ..but ITAZ is older an a parody of things... so really i cant get offended ...want to tho cause i lol when i watch this series.. i may need help tho.

Tom This is a parody of Magic Girl,Zombie,Ninja,High school,Slice of life,Vampire,Ecchi an Idol ..er forgot Young Wife anime to.Dam forgot Harem cough Cross dresing cough as well.The subs are what i watched.Cant say dubs are better but i did actualy LoL watching this show.

Kinda relise this probly will put me on a watch list ... but after watching tons of anime its a funny show to me.Tho it has a difrent set up an style than Binbogami ga! which if your expecting this you will be disapointed.If you expect a cheeky parody of all the catagories i listed .You wount be.

Highly recomended for high volume anime watchers with a sence of humor.Sence of spelling tho is optional!

@YotaruVegeta:

Oh, I see.

@Marshal Victory:

When I first watch the series, I didn't get the harem vibe until I watch the second season where the other vampire ninja girl started falling for Ayumu because of his ass.

@takashichea: Doesnt harem imply at least 3 of one gender an one of the other ? Because two would just be a triangle.1st season you have Eucliwood Hellsythe more or less. Haruna who does seem to have feeling for him oddly enuff.Seraphim seems to have feelings for him deep down.Yuki Yoshida wants to be wife thing but plays it off as has to.

So if my math is right ( an we have ever reason to question if i can count) 1st season has 3 at any given time of 4 main female characters.An ya i agree Seraphim was not into him till on ass gazing episode . .. cant belive i typed that.But second season adds few more to the mix to.

Hope they will do a 3rd season but seeing how 2nd season was kinda cut short ,kinda doubt we will.

@Marshal Victory:

Well, I'm slow on these things. Besides, it's not like Tenchi Muyo where the girls fight over him. The harem is pretty subtle.

@takashichea: Yeah hehe not like Tenchi Muyo . Hmm has their been a modern anime like that of late? A Certain Magical Index II was last harem-ish anime i watched that would come close to Tenchi Muyo as far as clueless male who has female who would fight for/over him.

Any way love this anime their i said it. also thanks for wiki work on it to .I watched 1st season 3 times so might have difrent perspective on it.

I love this show, and all the anime references that I notice in it :)

I have to restart this series during my Christmas Break...I watched the first 2 episodes, but then dropped it in favor of my epic One Piece marathon that took me from Ep. 30 to Ep. 535 over a 10-11 month period of time. Found what I had watched to be enjoyable, so I should get back into trying this perhaps this weekend.

I think this came out right as I was starting to get tired of ecchi harems. The little anime chart blurb basically summing it up as zombie harem certainly didn't help any either.

Try it again im sure you will at least like it.Its not that ecchi an definatly not a normal harem anime.An well the zombie part is debatable thus the ? at the end of the title.Main chatacter Ayumu Aikawa shares more with guy from 3x3 Eyes um Yakumo Fujii an any walking dead from Highschool of the Dead.

I love the fact that when you think that ITAZ is done, it only finds ways to get more and more absurd. It's almost like they pulled things out of a random trope generator for anime and just joyously smashed them all together, stood back, looked at their handiwork, and then went back to get a few more tropes to smash into what they had already done. When you thought that's all there was, they then got even more tropes and continued building, but somehow they avoided it becoming a complete mess. Is This a Zombie? is a precariously balanced demented train wreck of a show that brings a smile to your face in spite of yourself.

@sickVisionz: SPOILERS: It's not really a harem, or at least not the type of harem where you're unsure of who the guy would pick. It's the guy and the necromancer who you know are the main relationship.
