Near suggests that he and Light cooperate on the Sayu kidnapping situation and tells Light that his Investigation Team should handle the hostage negotiation instead of the SPK. The Investigation Team splits up into different planes to monitor Soichiro from Los Angeles, however, Mello's men force Soichiro to board a different plane and "hijack" it. They drop off Soichiro in a remote location in the middle of the desert. Light orders Near to keep any police or military forces from interfering while they monitor Soichiro via satellite, however, they lose sight of him when Soichiro enters an underground facility. There, Soichiro finds Sayu and a masked operative, who informs him that he will release Sayu in exchange for the Death Note. Soichiro complies. Near then loses track of the Death Note and most of the SPK members die from heart attacks soon after. Director Mason and Agent Gardner die of cardiac arrest, and Agent Ratt commits suicide by a gunshot to the head. Near then insists with Light that the two cooperate completely in the future. He also says that he suspects that a teen, nicknamed Mello, caused these deaths and is playing a game to see who can catch Kira faster. The episode ends with a shinigami named "Sidoh" telling another, "Armonia Justin", that he reported a lost Death Note to "the old guy" (presumably the King of the shinigami) and that this old shinigami told him that it was the one Ryuk dropped. Armonia then suggests that he make Ryuk "give it back" to him by going to the Human World.
