There's a new tough guy in town, and he means business. What will become of this new player, now that he's appeared in the Midnight Channel? Yu and his friends aim to put their clues together and unravel the mystery before this fearsome delinquent becomes the next victim.

Margaret welcomes Yu to the Velvet Room
Margaret welcomes Yu to the Velvet Room

Margaret is surprised to see Yu in the Velvet Room and tells him that her master Igor isn't in at the moment. She instead gives him the regular welcome to the Velvet Room and chuckles to herself. She's always wanted to say that. She opens her Arcana Conpemdium to talk to Yu about the newly aquired bonds of the Moon and Strength. Images of Kou Ichijo and Ai Ebihara can be seen in the pages. She then tells him that she's welcome to drop in when Igor is around, but asks if he prefers it when he's away.

A young male student is fighting alone against a gang of bikers and winning. Students rumor about a first year who beat up that gang and became their boss. Seems a TV network even is looking to interview him. The gossiping students wonder hoe such a delinquent could be in their school, but their attitudes change when that scarred student walks down the hall. With a single look form him, they skulk away without a word. A small stuffed bunny falls out of his mocked and Yu picks it up. He returned it to the underclassman, and he seems embarrassed then swipes it out of Yu's hand before walking off.

Yu and Nanako are at home eating dinner together as the TV talks about the murder of Ms. Yamano. She goes to answer the phone, hoping it's her father, but a few moments later he hands the phone to Yu and runs off to her room. Yu answers and Dojima tells him that he'll be working late, so Yu should just lock up and not wait up for him. He then tells Yu that he wont be able to take off on the 4th and 5th since some of the newer officers fell sick. He's stuck filling in and can't keep his promise to take Nanako out of Golden Week. he asks Yu to take care of Nanko while he's gone.

Chie drops by the Dojima residence to ask Yu if he wants to join her to hang out with the others. He apologizes that he can't today. Chie looking into the house to see a timid Nanako down the hall. Chie asks if she's Nanako and if she wants to join them out. Nanako looks to Yu, and he tells her that they can go.

Later at Junes, Yosuke serves up some beef steak orders to Nanako and the others. Chie snatches the knives from Yosuke and hands them to Nanako. Yukiko tells her to chew well since the steak isn't of very good quality. Yosuke is insulted that she said that so blatantly in front of her. He collapses into the seat, and Yu asks if he's already off work. He's on break, but surprised they all came to Junes for their break. Yosuke says he feels sorry for Nanako that they brought her here. Yukiko agrees on that, but Yosuke doesn't like how she rubbed it in.

Nanako perks up as she hears the Junes theme starts and sings along. Yosuke is overjoyed to hear Nanako say how she loves Junes. She is disappointed since everyone was suppose to bring obento. Yukiko asks if she can make them, but she looks over to Yu. Yosuke asks if he can make them, and he says as a hobby. Chie is impressed he can make them for his family. It makes him a real "big brother" type. Yosuke laughs that his ability is impressive and it certainly puts him above Chie. Chie fires back asking what makes him think she can't cook. Yukiko looks surprised and Yu joins her in asking Chie is she can. She quickly challenges them for a cook-off, but her confidence drops when Yosuke accept. He adds that Nanako can be the judge and they'll make obento better than her mother. She tells them she doesn't have a mother since she died in an accident years ago. Yosuke apologizes, but Nanako says she's fine since he has her father and Yu now as her "big brother". She's also happy to get to visit Junes. Chie, Yosuke, and Yukiko all stumble over each other as they tell her they can play together when she wants.

Yu and Nanako are sitting alone at home watching TV when Dojima comes home. He brought home some pre-made boxed lunches. Sitting on the couch, Dojima apologizes to Nanko for not keeping his promise to her. She tells him that Yu played with her. Dojima thanks Yu for looking after Nanako, and she asks what's in the Junes bag at his feet. he tells her that since it's May 5th that it's her present. He gives Nanako a shirt with a funny image on the front that she loves, and Yu got a pair of swimming trunks. He thinks they're fashionable. They then sit down to eat together after a long time.

Yu at the rest of the Investigation Team are at Junes to study for their coming tests, but Chie's pissed that Yosuke called them but sits there asleep at the table. Yukiko mentions how there weren't any cases on Golden Week, and Yosuke sits up at the discussion of the mystery. Yosuke pulls out his notes on the case at hand and shares his thoughts. The first victim was Mayumi Yamano, the second was Saki Konishi, then Yukiko was the most recent. Chie doesn't see what the motive could be without any connection, but Yosuke says the connection was with Ms. Yamano. Saki found Yamano's body, and she also stayed at Yukiko's family inn when she disappeared. He reasons that some girl connected to Ms. Yamano will be the next victim targeted. Yukiko only remembers hearing the door chime and someone call for her, but she never saw who it was. Yu brings up the Midnight Channel, and Yosuke mentions how it could be a warning sign of who's next. Yukiko suggests they start checking the Midnight Channel every night it rains. Yosuke leaves for home, and Chie comments on how they didn't get any studying done.

Yu and the rest of his class are into their tests at school. Chie and Yoskue both seem to be struggling. On the next day, the pair still are having a hard time, but Yosuke is eventually asleep in class on Wednesday.

By Thursday, Yoskue doesn't even show up at all for the exams. The school day ends, and Chie has completely zoned out from mental fatigue. Yosuke finally walks in and tells Yu that he was confident he'd get the same grade if he was there or not. Chie wishes she could be so carefree, then Yukiko asks Yu how he did. He things he did alright

That night at the Dojima residence, everyone is eating together when a news report on a a biker gang that was terrorizing the locals comes on. A young man was caught on camera beating up those gang members. Dojima seems to know who the boy is. His name is Kanji Tatsumi and often gets into fights. Looking on the screen, Yu seems to remember seeing that person.

At the Junes food court, Yosuke calls into order the meeting of the Special Investigation Unit for the Inaba Serial Murders and Kidnappings Case. Chie hates the long name, and Yukiko asks if this is going to be their headquarters. Yu brings up who they saw on the Midnight Channel. Yosuke recognized him as Kanji since he saw him on the news recently. He's disappointed that his theory was wrong about the next target being a woman. Chie doesn't even seen the connection to Ms. Yamano. Yukiko doesn't remember Kanji being so aggressive when he was younger. Chie's surprised to hear she knows him, and Yukiko tells them that his mother runs a textile shop in town. Her family inn as bought from that store for many years, but she hasn't talked to Kanji in many years. Yosuke suggest they go to the textile shop to ask around.

Yukiko leads the way, and they find a young boy in blue talking with Kanji's mother. As soon as they enter, the boy excuses himself to leave. Kanji's mother apologizes for not being any help, but he thanks her for giving him some things to think over. He passes Yu with a sideways glance, and Yosuke wanders what's with him. After some pleasantries, Yukiko asks about Kanji, but his mother says he's not back yet. A scarf on the shelf catches Yu's attention. Chie recognizes it as part of the noose they discovered in that first room they were in in the Midnight Channel, the one with the torn pictures of Misuzu Hiragi. Kanji's mother tells them that scarf was a custom order from Ms. Yamano. Kanji's mother then excuses herself when someone in the back calls about a delivery.

As the team are walking out, they see Kanji and the young boy in blue talking with Kanji across the street. They hide nearby and try to listen into their conversation. This boy is intrigued about Kanji for some reason and wishes to speak with him privately tomorrow after school is out. After he's gone, Kanji seems embarrassed and confused about what he meant by "intrigued". He's a fellow guy but interested in him, he wonders. When he noticed Yu and the rest hiding over his shoulder, he shouts at them and they run off.

They stop running at the nearby shrine. Yu says he couldn't hear a word Kanji and the other boy were talking about. Yosuke suggests they keep watch over the textile shop to see if anything happens. Yu agrees, then Yosuke suddenly asks for Yukiko's cell number. Chie shouts at him for being after her phone number to begin with. He denies Chie's accusation. but she tells him she wish he would stop calling her at night to tell her dirty jokes. He turns his attentions back to Yukiko, but she changes the subject that she has to pick up some tofu.

Kanji is alone in the school bathroom and combing his hair, but suddenly wonders what he's even doing. He's waiting outside school as he was asked with Yu and the gang watching in the distance. The boy in blue arrives and apologizes for being late. Kanji says he only just arrived and they walk off together. Chie picks up on something that's not right, but she's unsure what. When Yosuke asks about it, she even wonders if it's just her imagination. Yosuke suggests that he and Chie follow Kanji and the boy while Yu goes with Yukiko to watch the textile shop to see if anyone shows up.

At the shrine near the shop, Yukiko asks if Yu things the killer will arrive. Yu asks if she's scared. While she admits that she is, her desire to help is what's overcoming it. Yu tells her to relax, and she's embarrassed that her stress is so obvious. He tells here that she should relax since there's also the chance the killer wont show up, but she says that's not what she's so nervous about. This is the first time she's been alone with a boy her age. She knows it's easy fo Chie to make guy friends with her personality. Though, she admits that she's been having fun recently. She apologizes for making things more awkward, and she tries to call Chie so see how things are on her end. She can't get through and doesn't know Yosuke's number. When Yu says he needs the number, she surprises Yukiko that he's actually talking about needing her number for the investigation. She agrees and they exchange their numbers.

Kanji and the mysterious boy are walking in town elsewhere but not speaking. Kanji flinches as the boy asks if he can cut to the chase and ask some questions of him. Yosuke is around the corner and communicating with Chie through their phones, but they are only two feet away from each other. he asks why they're positioned like this, and she tells him that they don't want to be spotted together and caught. In fact, she wants to separate further. He thinks they'd get caught if they move, and she changes the subject that she's hungry. Yosuke yells at her to just order delivery, but she doesn't know how they could do that since they are outside. He tells her that Aiya delivers literally anywhere now. Chie quickly hangs up on Yosuke and dials Aiya. Yosuke yells that he doesn't want any as she ordered two servings of nikudon, by she yells that they're both for her. before she can say where she is, they look up to see Kanji standing in front of them.

Kanji wants to know what they're doing. Yosuke tries to say they are a passing loving couple, but Chie refuses to play along with that role. The boy in blue walks away, and Kanji suddenly recognizes them from the other day. Chie panics and stumbles over her words as she says they weren't trying to interfieer o thinks what he was doing was queer in any way. The word "queer" seems to hit a nerve with Kanji. Yosuke takes advantage of Kanji's pause to run off leaving Chie to follow moments later. Kanji runs after them screaming that they have the wrong idea.

The chase continues as Yu and Yukiko see Yosuke and Chie running by. With Kanji on of their tail, the pair join Chie and Yosuke in their escape. Kanji is on their heels and threatening to beat them up. Yosuke knows he's going to catch them eventually, and he tells Chie to ask as a decoy. When she demands to know why her, he tells her that now's her chance to say the heroic line "I'll handle him; you keep going!". She see his point, but Yukiko warns Chie not to let Yosuke fool her. In the heat of this race, Aika Nakamura rides up on a scooter to deliver Chie's orders of nikudon. She ignores Yosuke's question of how she fond them on the move. Chie goes to pay, but asks if Aika can make change. Yukiko offers to help. Aika asks they leave the bowls, but doesn't say where before driving off.

Once the team has lost Kanji under a bridge, they are exhausted, but Chie is enjoying her meal. Yukiko asks how her food is, and Chie's enjoying the warmth. Frustrated, Yosuke calls an end to the investigation and heads home. Yukiko asks about Kanji, but Yosuke sure that he can take care of himself. Yu still wants to keep an eye on him. Yosuke leaves, but Chie's finished both nikudon and wonders where she's suppose to leave the bowls.

Later that night as it rains outside, Yu's watching the Midnight Channel. The TV comes on to show a clear image of Kanji. He's only wearing a loin cloth. He's talking femininely and mentions crossing gender barriers. He appears to be in a steam filled bath house and blows a kiss. Yu stands watching the screen not sure what to make of this change.

Points of Interest

  • Kinshiro Mooroka only appears in this episode in the test montage and has no spoken lines.
  • Naoto Shirogane appears in this episode, but isn't formally introduced.
  • This episode's opening scene that introduced Kanji and Yu handing back the toy implies it takes place on Sunday May 1st, but schools in Japan aren't in session on Sundays.
  • The Ramen "ラーメン" sign in the scene where Yosuke gives Chie her beef steak is backward. This sign still appears later when the team talk about Kanji who was recently seen on the Midnight Channel.
  • May 5th in Japan is known as Children's Day (子供の日, kodomo no hi). This is actually a holiday celebrated in many other nations across the world at different times. It's one of the national holidays that takes place in Golden Week ever since 1948. It was originally separated into two holidays, Girl's Day March 3rd and Boys Day May 5th.
  • In this episode, only Yu's Understanding increased by one to Kindly.
