A Japanese anime artist, director and producer, he's most known for his work in mecha anime, especially Macross, and his signature flourish, the Itano Circus.

Beginning as a small animator, most notably Leiji Sakamoto's Galaxy Express 999 and Space Battleship Yamato, Ichiro Itano got his big break working on the original Mobile Suit Gundam, where he started to develop his signature in making combat sequences. He worked with Tomino again on his next project,  Space Runaway Ideon

In 1982 he started working with Shoji Kawamori on the series he's probably most well known for, Super Dimensional Fortress Macross. His earlier experiments with acrobatic combat maneuvers, an insane missile counts and heavy use of erratic contrails reached fruition here and influenced countless of other works. The partnership with Kawamori would prove fruitful since they worked again on such titles as Megazone 23, Macross Plus and Zero Earth Girl Arjuna and The Daichis - Earth Defense Family

Apart from Macross, he has sat in the director seat himself, helming projects like Gantz, Blassreiter and Violence Jack, though most Western audience might remember him from Tekkaman Blade.
