1-Shot Character

A character who only appears in a single Anime episode or Manga issue and is never seen again in the series. (This concept should only be attached to characters from a completed series not a currently ongoing one as they may surface again)

Age Change

When a character changes their age, either growing older or younger, and typically not simply by having time pass but as the result of some power or outside source.

Angels

Angels are beings that reside in Heaven. They are often portrayed with wings, halos, or both.

Anime Laws of Physics

Originally compiled by Darrin Bright and Ryan Shellito at the California Polytechnical Institute, they explain much of the abnormal physics phenomena we see in most anime.

Bad Ass Fight Scene

A fight scene or epic battle that stands above the norm of what the series offers and goes down in history as one of the best combat encounters in the series. The perfect combination of epicness and animation.

Bounty

A Bounty is a price put on the life of someone who is wanted by either the authorities, government, or private organization.

Bounty Hunter

Doing deals for large amounts of cash. Usually hunts people wanted by the law.

Bunny Girl

The Bunny Girl is a fetish outfit made popular by the Playboy company though the meaning is different in Japan. A popular outfit in cosplay.

Cat Fight

A term given to an altercation between two women.

Catgirl

Girls with cat-like features, primarily ears and tail. Feline mannerisms are also common.

Cats

Feline animal with four legs and says "meow." Many are found hanging around animes and mangas.

Chibi

Chibi means to be small in stature. In anime/manga the term is used for a character that is small in appearance and exaggerated features.

Clone

A Clone is a biological copy of any organic creature. A Clone is mostly created through science and is sometimes abused to an extent.

Clothing Damage

When a character's clothes become torn from an attack, such as an explosion or energy blast.

Collateral Damage

Collateral Damage is a military term describing a situation where soldiers destroy property or kill civilians by accident or on purpose. Example:Dragon Ball Z, there is a lot of property damages and lives lost when Majin Buu blows up the whole city.

Comedy

Nearly every anime has a comedic moment here or there. Everyone likes to laugh.

Cross-Dressing

The act of wearing clothes commonly associated with the opposite gender.

Crude Humor

A style of comedy that takes a crass and politically incorrect approach to topics considered to be taboo, indecent, or impolite such as sex, violence, bodily functions, pedophilia, race, death, gender, sexual orientation and things that would generally be considered offensive if made light of.

Damsel In Distress

A maiden is in peril and only her one true hero can save her.

Dark Past

One or more past events that negatively affected one or more people. It's very common in an anime for at least one person to have such a past.

Demons

Are powerful creatures that live in the pits of Hell. That are many classes and levels for these monsters but no matter the rank they are deadly beasts.

Dinosaur

A group of animals that went extinct 65 million years ago. They often appear in or influenced various manga/anime.

Energy Blast

A character can harness their power and shoot energy-based projectiles from their body.

Explosion

Explosions are featured in a wide array of anime/manga, created from various weapons/attacks.

Eyecatch

Eyecatches are short scenes or illustrations used to begin and end a commercial break in anime.

Fan Service

Fan Service is often a sexually provocative moment or pose that takes place in manga and anime. It usually has no real purpose to a story, and serves as a lurid visual.

Flashback

Used frequently in Anime to either recap past events or provide a back story for a character, either their origin story or their off-screen training of new attack. Sometime and entire episode/chapter would be a entire flashback.

God

A God can be a guardian or a ruler with nearly unlimited powers or sense of consciousness. Most of them are creators or controlers of a sertain element or concept, but there are also gods who are destroyers wile some can be both.

Horror & Monsters

A common theme in several anime and manga.

Humans

Humans are typically depicted as the dominant species of the planet Earth, and sometimes of other planets. Humans often mirror their real life counterparts in terms of abilities and intellect, while other times they can achieve superhuman feats.

Kitsune

A Japanese word for Fox. Kitsunes are also mythological creatures in Japanese legends. The most prominent feature around Kitsunes are their ability to shapeshift and play tricks on people.

Magic

Magic is an often used term in fiction. It is the concept of affecting the universe through supernatural methods and breaking the physical laws.

Manga Iconography

Common visual conventions seen in manga and anime to convey emotions, often for comical effect.

Marriage

A couple who have made an official vow to stay together.

Mother

A woman who has given birth to or raised a child.

Oni

Oni are creatures from Japanese folklore, variously translated as demons, devils, ogres or trolls. They are popular characters in Japanese art, literature and theater.

Panty Shot

Gratuitous exposure of a character's panties, possibly the biggest fan service concept in anime and manga.

Police

The Police are a form of law enforcement officers that work on the local levels. Uniforms are normally in either blue or black.

Prince

A male heir to a royal throne.

Robot

An electro-mechanical machine which is guided by computer or electronic programming, and is thus able to do tasks on its own.

Royalty

Someone part of a royal family.

Samurai

Samurais were warriors of feudal japan

The Police Company

The Police Company is a small organization of bounty hunters

Time Travel

The ability to travel from one era to another, forward and/or backward.

Unrequited love

A passion or romance for a person where these feelings are not returned by the object of affection. A one-sided love.

Vampires

Blood sucking creatures of the night, although not always evil necessarily. They are a staple of countless anime and manga series.

Werewolf

A Werewolf or Werwolf or even"Lycanthrope" is a mythical human with the ability to transform into a wolf or humanoid wolf, it is created when a human is bitten or scratched by another werewolf, or even put under a curse.
