The episode listing tells me that #26 is actually another recap. Gon writes another letter back home that summarizes the events of the past 13 odd installments. I didn’t miss anything significant, at all, when I skipped the last episode that used that conceit, so I’m just going to call it. The “Hunter Exam” is over. I’ll be skipping ahead to the most recent episodes for the next column. Expect some more detailed thoughts on the arc in a forthcoming VICE PIT episode.

While we’re focusing on these last episodes here, I just want to stress that the stand-out moment - - the one that gave me the real, genuine gut laugh - - was when Killua’s butler asks our heroes if they like games. You can practically see Togashi bursting out of his own characters as these knuckleheads all leap to the edge of their seats in unison, as if the butler was offering them all a bowl of skittles.

Do they like games? Yes. Duh. Obviously.

On paper, the prospect of meeting the Zoldyck family really just didn’t sound interesting. In execution, however, their introduction was actually rather charming. They’re like an ass-kicking Addams Family. Hell, they could probably sustain their own series. And I appreciated how this attempted rescue for Killua actually ended with his old man letting him go after giving him a genuinely-touching heart-to-heart. These aren’t a bunch of heartless monsters. They actually do care for this little blondie… albeit in a rather twisted way.

I find it utterly appropriate that this arc ends with Togashi teasing us with a spoonerism that he might as well have pulled out of a MAD LIBS session. They’re all swearing to meet again, one day, in “Yorknew City?” Seriously? He’s got to be trolling, at this point - - seeing just how much silly shit he can throw at us before we wiggle our noses over the smell.

Maybe this last write-up reads like an after-thought. Well, that’s because this mini-arc felt like a bit like an after-thought. We were already done with the arc, but that insufferable Gon and his (totally adult) indomitable will just couldn’t let it go, could he?

See you in the Chimera Ant arc.

Watch The X Zoldyck X Family" and “Can't See X If X You're Blind,” and decide for yourself, then read my comments on the previous episode.

Tom, are you planning on jumping to the start of the Chimera Ant arc or literally the most recent episode? This arc has does an awesome job of setting the tone early on and then ratcheting up the tension. If you jump in at the most recent episode, you'd be missing a lot of build up. As I recall, the start of the arc is also a fairly clean entry point, in terms of characters and plot.

Man, you're skipping like the best arc and the setup for like everything that makes the Phantom Troupe cool villains.

@sickVisionz: While the Phantom Troupe are awesome, Tom doesn't really need the setup for the Phantom Troupe since he'll be skipping over them (almost) entirely. That said, a few episodes in the middle of the Chimera Ant arc would be much less meaningful without any context.

Even ignoring the PT, Kurapika's advancement alone is worth it. He's barely in arcs since that one. Plus, the Gon vs Hisoka fight. The auction had some of the best stuff in the series imo.

Also, skipping the most epic HxH fight Gon vs Hisoka, and skipping the hidden Hunter Exam or the Nen learning exam with the entire explanation of Nen and how that works. I wouldn't recommend skipping those episodes.

^ thats what i was saying last write up but meh.. plus they're literally in the final stages of the chimera ant arc. without that past build up kinda makes the fights less epic dont ya think?? but i guess.

Lol, he cuts his eye to reduce the swelling, so I guess that rocky balboa comparison was quite accurate indeed,

Honestly, if he starts at the Chimera Arc I feel it recaps enough for him to pick up anything he missed. Even the whole Nin explanation.

The show isn't complex so it's less about him needing to pick up things to not be confused and more about if you're going to skip stuff, why on Earth would you skip the best parts?

@sickVisionz: Because, I'll tell you the dirty little secret, these are basically marketing tools to get people to check out the latest episodes of the series and build up the number of people watching (you didn't think the companies sent them stuff to watch simply out of the goodness of their hearts did you?) and if he goes to the newest episodes more people will read the links driving up his page views and advertising revenue...as always.....follow the money!

@zaldar: Nobody has sent him Hunter x Hunter considering it isn't licensed yet and he's just watching Crunchyrolls streams, which are monetized identically regardless of what episode you watch. Also should be noted that it's not like W&L about new episodes are getting more views and comments.

Regardless of all of that, none of which has to do with my point, he's skipping the best episodes of the series imo.

*shrug* color me cynical but I understand and except the site is a business. I don't have the data on watch and learns about new episodes as opposed to old but I would expect they might be getting more views.
